FIGHT BACK WITH TECHNOLOGY:

Homosexuals do not control the other tube, Television. Homosexuals CAN control this tube.

This technology of data communications, utilizing the computer and the combinations of tools and resources of the Internet/Cyberspace, can be our peoples nuclear weapon on the battle field of human rights and dignity. By learning the basics of E-mail and the power of the World Wide Web individuals and organizations alike can advance the cause of human rights for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgendered, AIDS, and all of our friends.

Sharing this tremendous resource with others in our communities, is the foundation of building a strong and lasting means of fast and effiicient communications between Homosexuals around the Earth.

Internet Service Providers:

There are dozens of commercial services in Southern California that provide modem connection to the Internet. Prices and quality of service vary considerably, so it pays to shop around and talk to others already using such services. The Web provides any number of pages with information about these services. Two worth checking out are:

A Short, Selected List of Local Service Providers
(No Endorsement Implied)

Since we are also printing this page as a hand-out for DQ-LA public Internet training sessions, a very abbreviated list of local service providers is provided below. This allows those not yet connected a start in shopping around. It pays to shop around, and query those already using a service. Prices and quality of service varies.

Again, this is not a comprehensive list, nor is DQ-LA endorsing any of the listed providers.

E-mail and E-Mail Discussion Groups:

All of the commercial service providers provide basic e-mail services. E-mail is essential to participation on the Internet. It provides the ability to send electronic messages to individuals around the world and join topical discussion groups. You can "subscribe" to (join) any discussion group and join the conversation. Any message posted to a discussion group get sent to everyone who has joined that list. There are well over a hundred Queer related disucssion groups organized around all manner of topics.

For a comprehensive listing of E-Mail Discussion Groups:

DQ-LA would like to make you aware of 2 important local discussion lists:

Queer Resources on the World-Wide-Web

The World-Wide-Web contains hundreds of interesting, different, exciting, (supply your own adjectives) Queer oriented resources of interest to the community. Again, the information provided below is a selected sample that provides a starting point. Again, no endorsements or quality judgements are implied. Certainly a host of important, quality resources have not be included. This is to help new users get started!

The subject guides suggested below, are a good place to start exploring, since they provide links to hundreds of available resources.

Accessing the World-Wide-Web requires a high-speed modem and a slip/ppp access account. You will also require a "Web Browser". Netscape and Mosaic are both available free; your internet service provider may also provide specialized software, and should provide support and help in getting you set-up.

BE SURE TO ASK ABOUT WEB CAPABILITIES, BROWSERS, AND SUPPORT WHEN SHOPPING FOR AN INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER.
