Subject: PSLx: Paid Internships for youth and student activists! Please post and distribute widely! Progressive Student Leadership Exchange (PSLx) 1995 Application Guidelines and Description History: In 1993, PSLx trained 20 students and youth from across the country to fight anti-gay initiatives in Idaho and Oregon. Working WITH the local communities, students learned from the best and saw the front lines of the radical Right's "cultural war" against America. Brief Description: PSLx is a leadership development program for students and youth featuring a one week orientation and four week field placement with organizations fighting religious Right initiatives. Programs for 10 activists each will take place in Oregon, Maine and California. In Maine, participants will work against a state-wide anti-gay initiative. In Oregon, a special rural focus will prepare participants for small town social change, while working to defeat rural religious Right initiatives. The California program will feature work against the anti-immigrant forces of 187 while preparing for a 1996 initiative that threatens to repeal affirmative action programs. Orientation week will feature skills-building workshops to prepare students for the field placements. People of color and women are especially encouraged to apply. Contact person: For questions, call Gary Schiff, director at 612/724-5942, Internet: schi0072@maroon.tc.umn.edu, snail mail: PSLx, 310 E 38 St #204, Mpls, MN 55409. Deadlines: Applications sent through the mail must be postmarked by April 20. Applications via e-mail at schi0072@maroon.tc.umn.edu (preferred) can be sent up to May 1. All applicants will be notified by May 15 whether or not they have been accepted. Stipends: All participants are provided with a $250 stipend for the five week program, and given room and board by host families. Matching travel grants are available for transportation to and from program sites (we'll send you ideas for fundraising your half if you are accepted). Program Dates: Mid-June through mid-August. Exact starting dates vary. Program Age Range: For activists between the ages of 18-26 (young people between the ages of 15 and 18 are eligible with organizational sponsorship, see below). Application Instructions: Please write a three page essay about why you want to participate in the Progressive Student Leadership Exchange this summer. You might want to start with a brief description of who you are and what you like to do (area of study in school, hobbies, political interests, or other). Make sure to include: * Your name, address, phone number * Previous volunteer /organizing/activism experience that you have had (What organizations have you belonged to? What did you do in these groups?) * What you hope to gain from this summer's internship experience? * Three references, at least one who can speak to your work as an organizer or your experience working in groups (include name, title, address and phone number for all three). As one program may have more applicants than another, please specify in order or preference which programs you are applying for. For youth between 15-18: Please attach to the essay a letter from a sponsoring organization that you have worked with in the past. This organization must be willing to cover part of your stipend. *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+ Jessea Greenman Chair, Project 21, GLAAD/SFBA 1360 Mission #200, San Francisco CA 94103 ph/fax @ home: 510-601-8883; gopher@outright.com "If time and space are curved, where do all the straight people come from?"
