discover his own sexual identity.  YA

Hall, Lynn.  Sticks and stones.  Follett, 1972.  Tom Naylor, 16 year old
pianist, becomes friends with a young man who has been discharged from
the army because he is gay.  Even thought he is taunted, he resolves his
self doubt so that he can accept this valued friendship.  YA

Holland, Isabelle.  The man without a face.  Lippincott, 1972.  A lonely
14 year old boy finds friendship and discipline with the tutor he has
hired to help him pass an exam.  This insecure teenager learns the
meaning of love and responsibility through the affection of this older
man.  YA

Levy, Elizabeth.  Come out smiling.  Delacorte, 1981.  A 14 year old
girl at camp forms a close relationship with another girl.  Both have
ambivalent attitudes about boys.  When they discover that their two
favorite counselors are lesbians, the two are concerned about their own
sexual identity.  YA

Koertge, Ron.  The Arizona kid.  Avon/Flare, 1989.  Billy spends a
summer in Arizona with his gay uncle working at a racetrack.  He falls
in love with a girl and grows to understand his uncle's life.  Very
funny book.  YA

Hautzig, Deborah.  Hey Dollface!  Knopf, 1989.  Val goes to a new school
and meets Chloe.  A close friendship develops, and Val is confused by
it.  YA

L'Engle, Madeleine.  A house like a lotus.  Farrar, 1984.  Vicki Austen
discovers a woman she idolizes is a lesbian.  She struggles to accept
the woman for who she is.  YA

Scoppettone, Sandra.  Trying hard to hear you.  Harper, 1974.  Two boys
who are lovers face the problems of acceptance by their friends.  YA

Singer, Marilyn.  The course of true love never did run smooth.  Subplot
deals matter of factly with teenage homosexual lovers.  YA

Crutcher, Chris, "A brief moment in the life of Angus Bethune." In
Connections:  short stories by outstanding writers for young adults.
Delacourt, 1989.  Angus' parents are a gay couple and a lesbian couple.
His problem, however, is the upcoming school dance.  A funny story.  YA
