This group of young people suffers extreme isolation and is especially vulnerable to drug and alcohol abuse, homelessness, and physical and verbal violence. The problem is worsened by the fact that the public schools act as though these young people do not exist. "Gay Youth" is a 40-minute educational video designed to address the homophobic attitudes and actions often encouraged in the public schools. It contrasts the suicide of 20-year-old Bobby Griffith with the courageous life of 17-year-old Gina Gutierrez. The video shows that information, acceptance, and support make enormous differences in the lives of these young people. "Gay Youth" can bring the issue of adolescent homosexuality into your classroom or group discussion with compassion and honesty. "An excellent contribution!" Virginia Uribe, founder and director, Project 10, Fairfax High, Los Angeles, CA. "A remarkable video. Its power lies in its depth and sensitivity to youth. As educators, we can use 'Gay Youth' to explore sexual identity issues with more honesty." Eleanor Fulton Carpenter, Assistant Principal and Director of Studies, Sidwell Friends School, Washington DC. "Gay Youth" is a must for psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric social workers and guidance counselors. Excellent!" Alan Hertzberg, _Sightlines_, American Film and Video Association. "A ground-breaking journey into the lives of gay and lesbian teens. Should be seen by every high school teacher and counselor." Mitzi Henderson, National President, PFLAG. "The young people in this video are some of our best, brightest, and most caring; they are a part of our human family, and we need each and every one if our society is to prosper. Walton's video should be standard fare in every high school in the nation." Jessea Greenman, GLAAD/SFBA's Project 21. (Note: Neither GLAAD/SFBA, nor Project 21, nor I get any monetary benefit from distribution of this video. I gave Pam a quote because I believe this video to be an important activist tool that will help advance our movement.) "From the tragic suicide of Bobby Griffith to the joyful triumph of Gina Gutierrez, "Gay Youth" informs us of the trials these young people face and what we can do to support them. I highly recommend this video to anyone who cares about young people." Paul Gibson, LCSW, author, "Gay Male and Lesbian Youth Suicide, volume 3 of the Report of the Secretary's Task Force on Youth Suicide, 1989.
