This issue:
John Jamieson, ex Commissioner of Police and Christian Coalition candidate, last night on Holmes Show attacked the education campaigns of the New Zealand AIDS Foundation and the New Zealand Family Planning Association accusing them of 'recruiting homosexuals in schools'. He said that funds, if the Christian Coalition was part of the government, would not be made available to those groups unless they cleaned up their acts.
These remarks were made to divert attention from allegations made by gay rights activist Eugene Moore.
Mr Jamieson, was accused by Mr Moore of saying of gays that "hanging is to good for them" in his presence. Mr Jamieson denied this again on the Holmes show but when it was revealed that Mr Moore had a secretly taped a conversation with him and he made this statement he changed his story to say that it may have been said as a joke.
This allegation was first made by Mr Moore two weeks ago on Access Radio in Auckland. In response to that a complaint was laid about the program with an attached fax from Mr Jamieson claiming he had never said these comments.
Warren Lindberg, Executive Director of the New Zealand AIDS Foundation, in response to these comments said that Mr Jamieson was clearly out of touch with NZAF education work as they received no government funding for work in schools.
Footnote: Mr Jamieson was Police Commissioner in 1993 when the police asked that they be given an exemption from the Human Rights Amendment Bill in terms of the sexual orientation clause. He said at the time he didn't want police in pantyhose! The police did not get an exemption.
The Alcohol Advisory Council (ALAC) in collaboration with Pink Health have launched a campaign highlighting issues of alcohol and drug use for lesbians.
This initiative is in response to a 1993 report on women and drugs which recommended that appropriate resources be available for lesbians.
The aim of the project is to promote good self esteem among lesbians. The emphasis in the posters and cards is on been proud and strong about who you are.
Some New Zealanders are flying to Australia to obtain free supplies of protease inhibitors which are available or larger numbers under compassionate supplies than in New Zealand. The cost of the drugs would be $560 per month otherwise.
Pharmac is currently considering placing the drugs on the free list.
HIV statistics to 30 June 1996 show that 27 people were newly infect with HIV in the last quarter. Of those infected 22 were male and 5 female.
Of the 22 males 13 were reported to have been infected through sex with other men, 5 to have been heterosexually infected (3 of these were infected in parts of the world where heterosexual transmission is common and one was considered infected elsewhere in the world), one was an injecting drug user, and one man was believed to have been infected while undergoing hospital treatment in Africa in the early 1980s.
Of the 5 females, 3 were reported to be heterosexually infected. Two of these 3 women were infected through sex with bisexual women.
The total number of people infected with HIV since reporting commenced in New Zealand in 1984 was 1130 people.
Of those 557 people were notified with AIDS with 15 people notified with AIDS in the second quarter of 1996. Of these 557 people 450 were known to have died.
