Election 1996
The final results of the election left unchanged the provisional count on election night. The final result showed that the Christian Coalition received only 4.3 percent of the party vote and so consequently received no seats in the next Parliament.
Chris Carter, New Zealand's first out gay MP standing for the Labour party, was defeated by 107 votes by the National candidate and MP, Brian Neeson. Unfortunately the decision of the Christian Coalition not to stand an electorate candidate may have worked against Mr Carter as the coalition received 1895 votes (5.6 percent) of the party vote in the electorate.
Fortunately the New Zealand parliament will have one out gay MP with the election of Tim Barnett, Labour candidate for Christchurch Central.
Following the election a number of people called for the establishment of a national lobby group which could speak with authority on gay and lesbian issues to counter the voice of the Christian Right.
Pride Centre
Thirteen volunteers and members attended a meeting held before the normal Auckland Pride Centre Board meeting to discuss the resent changes at the meeting. The meeting was often heated but the Board acknowledged some mistakes had been made in not communicating the changes to the members in a timely fashion.
Simon Nimmo, Board member, explained the changes were part of a move to increase financial accountability and for more emphasis to be placed on providing health facilities to the queer community.
The Board also said they would welcome a representative on the Board from volunteers and said they would like to include volunteers and members more in the planning process and would organise a planning meeting in the future.
A number of members present expressed no confidence in the Board. In commenting on letter written by Sandy Gauntlet, a board member who tabled his written resignation at this meeting, the Board said that this was not written on their behalf. They also commented that the Board had no input into the AGM report presented at the August AGM which showed the Centre in a healthy state of affairs.
Protease Inhibitors Delayed
The New Zealand AIDS Foundation (NZAF) is frustrated at the delay in introducing new Protease Inhibitors for people living with HIV.
Warren Lindberg, Executive Director NZAF, urged Pharmac, the government body with responsibility to approve public funding for drugs, to subsidise the three new drugs so people with HIV could use them.
Mr Lindberg asked "why should it take a year for New Zealand's system to consider something which has already gone through extensive trials... in the United States and Australia."
Meanwhile a number of New Zealanders have flown to Australia on a regular basis to receive two monthly prescriptions of the Protease Inhibitors.
Pharmac was due to consider one of the drugs at their August meeting but delayed that decision until they could consider all three drugs at their December meeting.
