High Court turns down marriage case

Today (28 May 1996) Justice Kerr, the High Court Judge which heard the marriage case last month, ruled against the lesbian couples seeking a marriage license. In releasing his decision he said that the matter was for Parliament to determine not for the courts. While he acknowledged attitudes to gays and lesbians was substantially different in 1996 he didn't know if the general community wanted gays and lesbians to marry.

The plaintiffs are obviously disappointed at the result and are likely to appeal the result.

Male Call reaches 1400 callers and receives additional funds

The Male Call Project has had 1400 completed calls to date. The Male Call project had hoped to have 1500 calls from men who have sex with men within NZ. They are delighted with the response to date.

To enable the phone lines to remain open after 1500 calls have been received the Health Research Council has provided additional funding for an additional 500 calls.

    Lindsay Perigo at GAP

Lindsay Perigo claimed to a recent GAP (Gay Association of Professionals) meeting that society had duplicated the social eveils that led to their persecution and supression. Mr Perigo, who is leader of the Libertarianz Party (note it currently doesn't even register in any political polls), also outlined his parties philosophy of promoting individual freedom and responsibility.

Before Mr Perigo spoke a group of lesbians left the function in protest at Mr Perigo, who also happens to be gay. This protest follows on from concern by other individuals in the Wellington Community at the lack of mention of lesbians in the name and other comments in the GAP newsletter.

These include decriminalising of marijuana, abolition of the social welfare system, privatisation of education and health, open immigration, and abolition of the Human Rights Commission, Race Relations Office and Waitangi Tribunal.
