Lawyer Dr Rodney Harrison announced this week that a hearing date would be set for the week of April 22 for the three lesbian couples seeking a ruling on their right to register their marriage. This date is several months earlier than expected and it was believed that the case had been brought forward due to the nature of the case.
To date more than $2,000 has been donated toward the women's court costs and a large fundraising auction is planeed in Auckland on 28th April. Donations towards the case can be sent to the Pride Centre, PO Box 5426, Wellesley St, Auckland, New Zealand.
A study undertaken by Shane Town, of the teacher education department at Victoria University in Wellington, states that male homosexual students were subject to constant verbal and physical abuse in New Zealand schools and were more likely to commit suicide.
The study was based on interviews with 10 young gay men who were either at school or had recently left. A similiar study of lesbian sutdents was carried out by Kathleen Quinlivan at Canterbury University.
The report has been criticised by Phil Raffills, Avondale College headmaster, who said the report "is simply another indication that the academics have lost their focus." He dismissed the study's claim that gay students were at greater risk of committing suicide because of homophobic culture in schools. He said "that's just something put about by the homosexual community and if anybody disagrees with them or expresses distaste for their activity, they attempt to devalue those views by labelling them as homophobic."
