    Auckland City Council Liaison

A preliminary meeting occurred this week with Jill McPherson, Auckland City Council Officer, and members of the queer community following last months delegation to the City Council. A number of items were discussed and some positive directions were identified.

A number of informal processes are now been put into place in an attempt to improve communication between Auckland City Council and the queer community. A more formal liaison structure with the Auckland City Council is been considered. This proposal would see a regular meeting set up with the Chairs of the Recreation and Community Services Committee and the City Promotions Committee, along with council staff and members of the queer community.

The origin intention was to present this proposal at the June 28th Recreation and Community Services committee but this will be delayed until the July meeting to allow for further discussion amongst the community.

AGM Auction raises $10,000 for marriage case

The celebrity auction at the Wellington’s Plaza International Hotel last week raised $10,000 for the legal costs of the High Court marriage case. More than 160 people attended the auction. The evening’s hosts were Carterton Mayor Georgina Beyer and television reporter Anita McNaught.

    Male Call a success

The Male Call Project has been an outstanding success, Russell Holmes, Male Call national recruitment co-ordinator said. He said Male Call interviews so far has shown that a broad range of men who had sex with men had called the 0800 hotline. Men have called from all over the country- from Invercargill to Kaitaia, Mr Holmes said.

Because of the diversity of the respondents, we believe that the results from this survey will destroy many of the stereotypes about gay and bisexual men, Mr Holmes said.

Male Call runs until midnight on June 16th on 0800-996969.

    Beats targeted by Police

Wellington police have targeted Wellington public toilets (beats) and have made 8 arrests and issued 20 warnings. The police acted after complaints from the public about men having sex at the Clifton Terrace toilets. Other public toilets in Wellington and Christchurch have also been patrolled by plain-clothes and uniformed police.

Douglas Jenkins, NZAF national beats co-ordinator for promotion safe sex among men who have sex in public places, said the police activity is a reminder that sexual activity in beats remains of the fringe of the law and that police attitudes to it are generally the same as pre-law reform.

Two new trustees elected to Hero Board

About 40 people attended the Auckland public meeting and elected two new trustees to the Hero Board, HIV-positive man Grant Hall and Indian lesbian Uma Kali Shakti.

Issues around Hero expenditure and the exclusion of bisexuals from the Hero mission statements were also raised at the meeting.

    NZAF support services staff changes

The departure of long-serving from the NZ AIDS Foundation’s Support and Counselling Services at the end of June marks the end of an era, says NZAF’s Executive Director, Warren Lindberg. Joe Kelleher, Programme Manager, and Jean Stewart, Burnett Centre Manager, have been responsible since 1990 for maintaining the support and counselling services through very difficult times and developing a consistent, professional service that people living with HIV and AIDS and people at risk can have complete confidence in.

Joe and Jean join other support and counselling services staff to have left in the last six months, including Deb Gray from Auckland, and Glen Snow from Wellington. We are always sorry to lose people who have made such a valuable contribution to the Foundation’s work, says Warren Lindberg, but we have to accept that people need to move on.

New appointments to these key positions herald a change of emphasis in the way that services are delivered, says Warren Lindberg. Wayne Otter, who has been a counsellor at the Burnett Centre since 1993, moves into the Centre manager’s job, and Russell Holmes, who has been recruitment co-ordinator for the Project Male Call team for the last six months, will take up the position of Support and Counselling Services manager.

Equal Employment promotion receives budget boost

The Equal Employment Opportunities Trust has received a potential funding increase of $350,000 in the latest budget. The final amount received depends on business support.

The Trust Chairperson, David Patten, said the Trust now has the ability to sell the benefits of equal employment opportunities much more widely, but I stress that this will happen only if employers take up the challenge being offered.

He added that the increased funding indicated that the Government has now accepted equal responsibility for making know the benefits to employers of hiring the best person for the job, regardless of culture, gender, race, disability, sexual orientation or family commitments.
