Auckland City - Quotes from the Mayor and Councillors

Mr Les Mills, Auckland City Mayor, in an interview on Auckland's G&T radio show, showed his true colours when he was challenged on the issue of the establishment of a queer liaison group with the city council. A full transcript and audio record will be available soon (hopefully) of what was said.

A followup meeting has been arranged with Mr Mills for early September and further action is planned.

To understand some of the background of Auckland's current city council the following are a few of the quotes from two of the people on Auckland City's Council.

Metro, August 1996, Mr Phil Raffills, City Council Avondale Ward, Avondale College Principal and National Party Candidate for Owairaka.

Raffills vows he would never discriminate against gay pupils. His Christian beliefs, he says, tells him that, "God's creation is a valuable creation." But he does find it a difficult question: "I can't stomach this public proclamation of something that's causing 80 percent of the AIDS deaths in this country still. I'd rather have a Christian parade down Queen Street and celebrate life."

Metro, March 1996, Les Mills, Auckland City Mayor.

"I'm on the record that I won't promote the gay and lesbian lifestyle," says Mills, explaining his position. "I accept it. I have no problem accepting it, but it's not my favoured lifestyle. I don't have a responsibility to promote it. I don't treat them any differently."

"I have a simple prespective of the homosexual community: they have the same rights and responsibilities as any part of the community. I don't look down on them but they have the same responsibilities for good behaviour as anyone else and I don't consider the Hero parade suitable behaviour."
