This issue:

NZ gay MP Chris Carter to talk to Mugabe

It was reported in the NZ Herald that gay MP, Chris Carter will confront the President of Zimbabwe, Mr Mugabe, at the Commonwealth leaders meeting over his anti gay comments.

Thirty-seven NZ MPs have signed a letter to Mr Mugabe asking him to show more tolerance.

An extract from the letter reads "Your nation has a proud record in the struggle for human rights. You freed yourself from the racist regime of Ian Smith and were a frontline state in the campaign to end apartheid. We are sure that, as a black African who grew to adulthood in a white-dominated Rhodesia, you understand that discrimination is usually based on ignorance."

Rainbow Health Conference

The two day Rainbow Health Conference was attended by just over 40 people. The conference about gay and lesbian health had a focus on issues around alcohol but also discussed issues of violence in relationships, violence in general, HIV issues, grief & loss issue and queer culture. The conference also looked at community development issues and how people can access pink health.

The conference provided an excellent networking opportunity. A decision was made to officially establish pink health as an organisation in the hope that this would raise the profile of gay & lesbian health issues.
