New Zealand's first transexual Mayor Georgina Beyer has been receiving world press attention including the BBC and Time magazine. NZAF consultation with the Auckland gay community

Following criticism of NZ AIDS Foundation by some members of the Auckland gay community NZAF has started a consultation process. One issue that has been identified from this process is the fact that due to resignations that there is no significant presence on the NZAF Trust Board from Auckland gay men. Currently NZAF and a gay community liason group are actively seeking Auckland gay men for the vacant positions on the Board.

Riding the Rainbow health conference

It was expected that about 50 people interested in lesbian and gay health issues would attend the Riding the Rainbow conference.

Queer consultation committee to be formed in Auckland

Following the local government elections the formation of an Auckland les/bi/gay/trans committee to liase with the council is been actively discussed by several of the unsuccessful lesbian and gay candidates.

During the local government election campaign Les Mills, the successful Mayoral candidate, was reported in an interview with Express, as saying 'I am supportive of setting up a gay and lesbian advisory group to work with Council'.

Local Government Electoral Reform

Local government reform got a further push this week with further submissions been called for Richard Northey's Bill which would allow the single transferable vote system (STV) to be used in furture local government elections. This has gained more momentum with the recent local government election results in Auckland where C&R gained total domination of the city with less than half the vote.
