Two peaceful protests are been planned against Mr Mugabe, President of Zimbabwe, when he is in Auckland for CHOGM (Commonwealth Head of Government Meeting). One demonstration is planned on Friday midday and another on Monday morning before the conference concludes.
Contact has also been made with a member of GLAZ (Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe) who has provided background information on the situation in Zimbabwe.
St Matthews in the City are currently running a fundraising campaign. As part of the campaign they produced a television advertisement. However instead of showing the morning Anglican congregation they showed footage of the evening gay Auckland community congregation including pictures of the congregation and of a gay couple, in an embrace.
Earlier this year in the St Matthews in the City Festival they included a drag show as part of the programme.
The proposed automation of the AIDS hotline has been delayed another month. The new service will not be operational until the beginning of December.
Meanwhile the current AIDS hotline will continued to be answered by the remaining volunteers.
It was reported in the NZ Herald that Rev Dick Holland, minister of the Ponsonby Presbyterian church, has nailed a list of grievances to the front door of the church, calling for the Church to adapt to modern lifestyles.
Included in the list Rev Holland accuses the Church of being hostile to non believers and perceived sinners, such as homosexuals, and being unable to deal honestly with conflict.
In unrelated news Rev Alan Brash's book "Facing our Differences" was released this week. This book challenges the church to accept on equal terms gays and lesbians.
I have received none so there are none! (And I have been too busy this week to contact people). Also if you have any photos of events can you pass them onto me for inclusion on the queer pages at Akiko.
