Sex survey

The New Zealand AIDS Foundation has received a $285,000 grant from the Health Research Council for a nationwide survey of men who have sex with men.

The survey will be carried out by phone using an 0800 number. Callers will be asked questions on their sexual practises, condom usage and sexual identification. This information will then be used in planning prevention programs in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Advertisements will appear in a variety of media. The survey is targeted at men who have sex with men, including those who do not identify as gay or bisexual.

Hepatitis A still on the rise

The incidence of Hepatitis A has risen significantly this year in Auckland. By the end of November 145 cases had been reported compared to 28 for the whole of last year.

The increase is highest among gay men in their 30s and young South Auckland children.

"My advice is that all gay men should take safe sex precautions and should consider being vaccinated against hepatitis A and B if they indulge in activities that will put them at risk" Dave Hookway, NZAF project development officer, told the Auckland City Harbour News.
