Editorial

Firstly apologies for the non appearance of QNA last Sunday and the delay in getting this issue out. A number of events conspired to prevent last weeks issue getting completed not least been a dispute between my previous ISP and a number of its customers. Somehow I ended up in the middle of this dispute presenting a number of customer issues to the management. They appear to have listened to a number of these issues. As a consequence of the events in the past two weeks I have now moved ISP so please note my new email address is proffitt@iprolink.co.nz. Of course I can always be contacted via proffitt@nz.com.

Feedback on Television complaint upheld article

As a result of the last issues article on the television complaint about "Craving for Love" Selene Mize (SMIZE@gandalf.otago.ac.nz) wrote the following to me. It is reproduced below with permisssion.

Mark,

It depends on the circumstances whether a broadcaster can continue to run an item when an earlier complaint was successfully upheld. For example, for some standards, context matters. So if the broadcaster runs the same item later in the day, OR WITH A WARNING OF BIAS, it might be OK. The BSA will do something about it (sooner or later) if the broadcaster is just flouting them, however, so it is really important to complain each time a programme airs.

I like your QNA (but isn't anything ever happening in Dunedin?)

Selene

P.S. I teach Media Law. Feel free to invite people to get in touch with me for information on broadcasting standards and addresses and procedures for making a complaint, and list my e-mail address. But warn people, if you decide to do that, that I am going to be overseas from early December to early February and won't be able to respond during that period.

Events - Reviews

Auckland Coming Out Day Parade and Concert 3 December

An extremely hot day with over 3000 people involved in the Parade and an estimate of about 5000 people in the streets altogether. This years Parade was a tremendous success with the concert be extremely successful. In fact when we started to clean up at 5pm people still were sitting around until we turned the music off at 5:45pm.

The only complaint was the black official T shirts... They really kept the heat in! A good start to summer and the festivities that are to come.

Wellington Lesbian Ball, 9th December ... The Party of the year

Hundreds of gorgeous women from all over the country converged on the Wellington town hall on Saturday night for a most splendid ball. We were greeted at the door with red or white carnation buttonholes and dance cards! Inside the hall, a big crowd dancing and partying ... teenagers to octogenarians ... tuxes, miles of chiffon, glitter, silk boxers and tall boots, restoration wigs, brocade waistcoats over black singlets, top hats and cute 50's cocktail-hour hats, butches in slinky black numbers split to the waist. There was also a special celebration - the local lesbian community's most senior couple leading out a waltz after one had been presented with flowers and a cake for her 80th birthday.

And there was music - the Virgin Marys came out in a misty swirl of Gregorian chant, in costumes from a wild Shakespearian fantasy. The drummer picked up her sticks - and mesmerised 500 women. Then they set us dancing dancing ... well into Sunday.

We are all grateful to Brendy, Willow, Sally, Alofa, Ann-Marie, Elizabeth, Carol and Lainey, that fine consensus of lesbians who sweated for several months organizing this very classy ball. Also the sponsors (Caspers, DOODS, Devotion Trust, Over 35's Dances and Lesbians on Campus) for their generous support.

Ellen, one rather tired but happy partier
