Queer Resources - Aotearoa New Zealand

Kia Ora. Welcome to the New Zealand Section of the QRD.

New Zealand has made significant progress in the last ten years towards equal rights for the queer community.

In 1985 legislation was finally passed which decriminalised sex between consenting male adults. The law was passed with an age of consent of 16 years which is the same as the heterosexual community. Unfortunately the human rights section of the legislation failed to pass.

Finally in 1993 the human rights legislation was passed and came into effect on 1 February 1994. The legislation passed with very little opposition. No exemptions were provided for the police, who requested exemptions - or the military - who did not request exemptions. The military changed there policy in 1992
