On Friday, June 27th, late in the evening, New York City police made a planned raid around 1 a.m. on The Stonewall Bar at 53 Christopher Street in Greenwich Village. Employees began being arrested. Some customers were told to leave. Others were detained. But the raid turned ugly when angry gay patron, several transgenderists, and others started yelling "gay power!" and throwing stones, coins, and bottles. Setting: the Stonewall Inn, a nondescript two-story building at 53 Christopher Street, just off Sheridan Square in New York's Greenwich Village. Dawn Hampton, a torch singer and hat-check girl who began working at the Stonewall when it opened in 1966, recalls that the Stonewall Inn was "the biggest after-hours gay dance palace in the city at that time. The place there now is much smaller than the original." http://www.actwin.com/stonewall/theinn.html 'Homo Nest Raided, Queen Bees Are Stinging Mad' Reprinted from The New York Daily News, July 6, 1969 http://www.yak.net/ian/stonewall.html ---> ACON Survey You can give ACON some direct feedback by completing a survey at http://www.rainbow.net.au/~acon ---> AIDS Impact conference AIDS IMPACT: Biopsychosocial Aspects of HIV Infection. 3rd International Conference. http://www.soros.org/lindesmith/semcon/aidsim97.html The major policy, cultural and social issues concerning HIV prevention and health promotion and issues confronting those living with HIV/AIDS and their caregivers will be addressed by world experts. http://www.bhs.mq.edu.au/nchsr/impact.html ---> Solstice Supper June 21: You are invited to a humble gathering ... http://members.tripod.com/~pridesydney/solsticesupper.htm ---> PRIDE Music + Lithium Correct addresses >> PRIDE Music URL: http://www.pridemusic.com.au Lithium URL: http://www.rainbow.net.au/~elysium ---> Brisbane Pride Festival Check out Brisbane's Pride Festival on the Web http://pride.queer.org.au/brisbane/ mailto:pride_festival@queer.org.au ---> The KM1 Herbal Formula trial From here http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/5243/km1.htm you can find out all about this trial of a herbal formula for people living with HIV/AIDS, an Australian first, and our current campaign to get it available to prisoners living with HIV/AIDS. mailto:comp-trial@rocketmail.com ---> Jelli Comix Jelli comix are a dykey/queer comix-zine with strips by cowgrrrl, bex, and karen selby and cells by miriam english, katrin kremmler, marion conrow, fish, karen kinder, irene mulder, sarit, wolf, ... Not one was older than 13. A shocked police officer said the weeping children clung to the legs of his officers. They were emaciated and suffering from malnutrition. They had been beaten so badly that most needed to be carried to freedom. Many had skin diseases. They told of being thrashed if they failed to make 700 paper cups per day, by hand. Police suspect that to keep them awake during sadistically long workdays the owner gave them amphetamine tablets. One 13-year-old told police he had been beaten unconscious twice when he tried to escape. There are ways to stop this atrocity and many other injustices in the world today. Their stories are varied and full of strength and determination. However, they are also stories of a revolting misuse of power and control. A control that prevents those who have survived abuse from telling anyone about their story up to 10, or 20 years later. While some may live without ever telling anyone because of fear and shame. I am still seeking further submissions for the anthology 'sex after sexual abuse'.
