I live in Sydney, Australia. I walk with sticks as I am mobility impaired and have been for over 6 months now. Because of the barriers I have recently faced, that is isolation in the disability and lesbian community due to attitudes, lack of access, stereotypes of lesbianism and of disability, having to deal with heterosexual doctors who keep insisting on talking about birth control and ignoring that I am lesbian, and so on and so on. I decided to approach an activist group, here in Sydney, called COAL (Coalition of Activist Lesbians) to do some research on these issues. They gave me the go ahead and I am now looking for lesbians who may be interested in participating in this research, which I intend will give them a voice about their experiences. If you are interested, please e-mail me at mailto:s942694@mail.macarthur.uws.EDU.AU Thanks and I'll let you know the outcome, when I've finished this research. - Alison Daniel ---> Corrections In your last edition re Aussie Bears you omitted Bears Down Under, a cyber-bear club run exclusively for bears and their admirers resident in Oz. This article reflects reactions to the first year and a half of Sydney Gay Liberation, when ideas of effeminism and marxism were challenging the 'counter-culture' and liberal orthodoxies of the movement, at a time when radical lesbians had withdrawn from formal activity in the organization. It questions a narrow 'gay liberation' approach and connotations of the word 'gay' in favor of the more radical spirit (feminist, New Left) of the movement's founding mothers and fathers. It was first published in Gay Liberation Press [Sydney], 3, September 1974. http://www.ozemail.com.au/~cjpolicy/gayrights74.html mailto:cjpolicy@ozemail.com.au ---> For members and ex-members of Women's Electoral Lobby On Saturday 13th September 1997, WEL NSW will be celebrating its 25th anniversary by holding a luncheon at the Russian Club, Strathfield. We hope to have a multitude of women there, who themselves will provide the entertainment by telling "herstories" about why they joined WEL, what happened when they did, and how they're surviving now. We're making a special effort to attract country members, who on application may attract a fare subsidy. Cost is only $25.
