state capital, except Darwin.

   Gay-hate killings in New South Wales: 23 since 1990.
   Gay bashings: 190, 1993-94; 170, 1994-95.
   Police survey showed lesbians six times more likely to be physically
assaulted than heterosexual women. For gay men the figure is 4-1.
   Sydney hosts the world's biggest gay and lesbian Mardi Gras and month-long
gay festival each February, which regularly attracts 500,000 spectators and
participants from all over the world.
   Estimated annual revenue from these activities $30 million.
