It's always good to see a well known personality come out in their own way, no matter what age or stage in their career they are at. Some of the more notable ones include Elton John, Freddie Mercury and now the much publicised Michael Barrymore. A well known personality coming out always goes a long way towards educating the homophobes, and lets them see that homosexual entertainers are no different to anyone else. However, if you are rich and well known, coming out has always been easier, especially if you are a thespian and move in the ever so false lovey dovey world that Prince Edward seems to find himself so at home in. After the Barrymore experience, maybe there will be a flood of some of the worst kept secrets making their way into the tabloids. After all it will hardly do their publicity machines any harm. Will it? Take away the rich and famous tag, maybe you work as a fireman, a soldier, a rugby player or you are just a young guy of 16 years and you need to come out. What do you do? You bottle it up for ages and maybe even for years. What will your mates think, will they still happily shower at the same time as you after a game of rugby? Who knows! In the showbiz world, being gay seems to be the in thing in the nineties. Being seen at all the AIDS functions wearing the obligatory red ribbon on the well worn tux seems to be a must for those whose careers are in decline. Although I do feel for those who do come out, sometimes I'm a bit uneasy as to their real reason for doing so. Who in your opinion had the harder task in coming out Michael Barrymore or the guy who lives in an inner city housing estate? You don't get any awards in the housing estates. Gordon Gosnell ---------------------------------------------------- SCENE NEWS glasgow Nice one Madam Gillespies! Not only did the club lay on the whole evening for a joint venture with Phace West, with Hazel Dean topping the bill to a packed house, but a week later Madam Gs presented Phace West with ukp1,000 from the door money. Manager Robert Anderson was saying that next months bill of fare will be just as spectacular with a visit from Angie Brown. Monday's see the start of Bernice Hindley's Barmi Bingo with major holiday vouchers to be won, and the regular candlelit cabaret with Georgia, Scott, and Billy on a Wednesday from 10pm till late. David at Squires tells us that following on from the successful Toga Party, this month's theme is a Pyjama Party on the 9th of Sept. For those who do not use such garments, you could always pinch a pair from your latest trick. At the Waterloo, no news has been released yet as to whom the new manager is to be. Maybe the high heid yins are waiting till the refurbishment to complete the job. As soon as we hear the gossip we will of course pass it on. Over at Bennets this month we have visits from Paradiso on the 10th, EYC on the 16th, and the September weekend is highlighted by the appearence of Sweat Box. edinburgh Last month saw the second SAM Highland Fling, which like the first event turned out to be a huge success, attended by over 3,000 lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and their friends. One of the most popular events turned out to be the Tug O' War Tournament, won this year by the Gay Outdoor Club. However one thing was missing this year, the bad press in the local papers. Maybe they are getting the message that we are no different to anyone else.(Well! Maybe we can enjoy ourselves better). The opening of, Cafe Kudos, Eat Out and The Buzz have seen the scene grow once again. Some people have even said that with the soon to open Over The Rainbow, there are now too many cafes for them all to succeed. I think not. When you look at the style and the different market they are aiming at, they could all do very well, thank you very much. Recently a reader was asking us who wrote our music column, well has he been living on the moon or what. He doesn't recognise the velvet touch of our Andy. Well, just pop down to the New Town and see for yourself. Must be a tourist eh! manchester Most of the news this month is taken up with the Village Charity's Mardi Gras, reported at length on pages 14&15. Provided of course the bloodhound gets back in time to meet the deadlines. We shall see. I would imagine that the amount of queens with mobile phones in the Manchester area will soon be on the increase after the opening of the new regional office for the Pink and APN(or whatever it is going to be called). I can just imagine it - Bleep Bleep, Bleep Bleep, and the town centre comes to a halt. A case of spot the queen. One new addition to the Manchester scene has been the arrival of the barge at the canal alongside The Metz Cafe Bar. The barge is to be a permanent fixture and should add some real Cajun atmosphere to those summer nights. One date for the diary is the forthcoming Manchester City's UK Club Night on the 15th of October. On this night a passport costing ukp6 will be issued allowing entry to most of the clubs involved. The night is being organised on behalf of the city's homeless. Well worth supporting so get along and help those in need. CYA! blackpool Welcome to the Vera Veg & Pearl Diver column. Give us all your gos or we'll just scweam and scweam... We never let the truth stand in the way of a good story. This month, the Basil machine gives you some fab cab at all the venues. Over at Basil's one of the strippers worth checking out is Corkscrew on Sat the 9th, how does he get it into the bottle? Other cabaret nights include Thursdays and Fridays. Next - a mince up the road to Pepes, where on a Monday you have the Nasty Bingo with DJs Taz (that's me) & Craig along with the Bingo Berthas. Wednesdays are stripper nights with cheap drink and cheap staff. This month sees E.Z. Rider on the 13th, Bodyhint on the 20th and Hero on the 22nd. Mop and Bucket will be cleaning up at the Handbag on the 10th, Lee Star on the 17th, Sandra and the Boys on the 25th. Saturday nights at the Flamingo are becoming legendary with over 1,000 in attendance. One of the reasons might be Phroots DJ Papes and her Wheels of Steel. Worth going just to see her tits, huge or what? All else fails there's always the Clone Zone wank material. Well that's it for now, but remember we don't sleep with everyone (well not all at once) Bye for now lovies - Vera & Pearl. Breaker Breaker - Think you've seen it all? Ain't never lived 'til you stuck to Lucy's carpet! ('bout time those str8s upstairs gave the lucious Linda some real refurb. money, huh?) Boy blunder and muffin man hit the 'pool a few weeks a go - did an 85mph vertical off the Max (rippin!) and zapped some R&R at a cute B&B on Princess St tagged the Regent House. Sisters Norma and Hellen preside. Tell'em we sent'cha! - Signoff(AD) liverpool Like many other cities, the gay scene in Liverpool is still expanding. No sooner have the Masquerade and Daily's Dandelion opened their doors, than another new club has joined them. The Pink Palace next door to the Masquerade in Cumberland has opened with two dance floors, one pumping out heavy disco music and the other with a more handbag camp style. The Palace is open Wed-Thur-Fri-Sat. More reports as they come in. Even though the rain put a damper on the events at Mersey Pride, it never stopped this little disco bunny dancing till dawn at Garlands, having a quick kip, then heading round to The Escape for their all day charity bash Round at the Escape, Ian tells us that the charity bash raised ukp263 to help future events. Nice one folks. This month sees a revamp of things at the Escape with some new nights, DJs and sounds. If it is something of a difference you are looking for then the Escape's Bubble The Foam Party on the 22nd should be a hoot. Minimun dress is recommended. Other nights for the diary are Jamie Watson on the 12th, Titti La Camp on the 19th and the return of Sisters Slim on the 26th. midlands Fab reports are coming in of the Pineapple Inn's recent Planet Hollywood Party, that was by all accounts a night to remember.(Tough on those who missed out). However, for those unfortunate souls, all is not lost. Friday the 22nd of this month sees the Pineapple's 2nd birthday party, and Mark and Phillip promise you all a night to remember. Another great night and one to watch out for in future was the appearence of comedienne/vocalist Michelle at the Dover Castle. On speaking to Terry, I think it is somewhat true that if this very popular venue was to burn down it would still be as popular as ever!!!!! News just in is of a possible new gay Sunday (8pm till late) night in Kettering. After the way the locals were treated by the Cotton Club, I do hope the new venture really tries to work with the community. We shall report back in the near future. Like many one nighters its success really requires the locals to support it. It's up to you. Next month, I shall be reporting on my visit to all you lovely Brummies, so beware. Now on a personal note, thanks to the secret admirer for the message left on the answering machine. However please don't be shy, I don't bite. Speak to me when you see me next out and about.. ---------------------------------------------------------------- FOCUS ON BLACKPOOL Each of us has a different reason for wanting to visit the phallic city. It might be the candy floss, the tacky kiss me quick hats, the illuminations or even the thought of a good ride - at the fairground of course. All of these things never change and are all a part of the pleasure of Blackpool. However, Blackpool, or Basilpool as it is affectionately known on the gay scene, has changed and is still changing even as we go to press. It is getting bigger and better all the time. When I caught up with Basil on my last visit, I even managed to sit the guy down for a bit and had a good blether about the future of his company, In The Pink Leisure. It is not so long ago that Basil was seriously thinking of giving the whole thing up, after a string of personal problems and an attack and robbery. In fact the paperwork was all but signed, when, after some serious soul searching and a lot of prompting from locals he changed his mind. So what is the Basilpool empire all about? The mainstay is of course is The Flamingo. By the time the refurbishment is complete it will be the biggest Gay Club in the Europe, boasting 4 levels, 6 bars, a snack bar and a Clone Zone shop. As we go to press the two upper floors have been completed, and now incorporate the new bar - Phroot, aimed at the more serious dancers. The two lower levels are expected to be complete during November and Basil assures us that they will be a sight to behold. Round at Pepes, the former 501 club is also being transformed down the lines of a leather/cruise bar. 'This is only a natural progression as things seem to be heading that way anyway. The local leather scene would appear to have adopted Pepes, so why change things to much'. The UK bears club meets there on the third Friday of every month. The latest addition to the scene is the Flying Handbag. Every town or city has its down to earth type of gay pub, the handbag is Blackpool's. The former straight bar, has had a complete tart up and is set to become a regular part of the scene, I am sure like all the other pubs it will find it own character as time moves on. Already it has become a regular with the more mature couples. Basil's is one of those pubs you can never put you finger on as to what makes it special. With nightly cabaret, three bars, cheap drinks, a cruisey split level arena and the campest metal stairway to the upper floor you have ever seen, it has all the ingredients of a great night out. Last but by no means least on my travels I wandered into Funny Girls. Now, for a straight show-bar, 'it ain't half camp mum'. A good mixture of straight and gay seem to keep this little gem in the empire ticking over very nicely. When the refurbishment is completed FGs will double in capacity to 1,200. With all the staff fully dressed transvestites, and all in the best possible taste, they give a real show - biz feel to the place. Each and every night the regulars are treated to and are entertained by a constant stream of high quality burlesque cabaret. Returning to my talk with Basil, he tells us that other Funny Girls are planned, exact clones of the original. The sites have yet to be fixed but I hear that Manchester and Newcastle may well be on the list. With others soon to follow in a franchise operation. As a parting shot, Basil informs us as well as Funny Girls, plans are going ahead for something rather special to be added to the City's gay scene. However the exact details are still under wraps for the time being, but will be revealed in the near future. Now don't say we never give you anything. A years sub to PULSE in a plain brown wrapper(weeeeeeee!) to the first person who can tell me the conection between Basils birthplace and a Spanish drink. (Hard eh! - Not). Gordon Gosnell. -------------------------------------------- HEALTH MATTERS As ever, the mailbag has contained a selection of letters addressed to the PULSE doctor. Unfortunately she cannot answer your letter personally but has picked out a few to tackle in this column. Names and addresses have been withheld. Dear Doctor, My boyfriend and I have been together for about six years now, I'm 25 and he is 34. Our sex life is still good but not as frequent as it used to be. Are there any vitamins that we should take that will increase our sex drives for each other. A) At your age I presume that your sex drive is still fairly healthy and that the problem is really one of familiarity. All relationships go through this. Never mind the pills and try to make more time for relaxation together before retiring and you will notice a difference. Dear Doc I have recently slept with another guy outwith my relationship, and I am worried about whether I should go and have an AIDS test or not. We did nothing heavy, just sucking and wanking each other off. A) Oral sex is a very low risk activity as far as AIDS is concerned. If you are still worried why not call into your local GUM clinic and arrange to talk to a health advisor who can help you decide whether to have a test or not. It is always a good idea to have a check up now and again as a matter of course. Dear Doctor, My boyfriend has been are keen to try anal sex for some time now, but although I love him dearly and would do anything for him, I am not so sure. He is fairly well built and I am afraid that he will hurt me or even worse injure me. What do you think? A) In the sexual side of any loving relationship, it is always good to try new things, anal sex is no exception. If you are both wanting to try it, get yourselves nice and relaxed, take your time, and use plenty of lubrication. It may hurt at first, but once you know how to relax your muscles, I am sure you will enjoy. Remember always to use a rubber made especially for anal sex, and to stop if there is a lot of pain. --------------------------------------------------- MARDI GRAS 1995 The August Bank Holiday means that it is time for Manchester to put its carnival hat on and party-party-party. Gordon Gosnell sends us this special report. Give lesbians and gay men a time (not too rigid), a date, a costume and a charity to support and they will be there in numbers. After the huge success of last year's event, the Village Charity's fund raising Mardi Gras 95 Carnival was on line for yet another mega bucks affair. Councillor Joyce Kellor, the Lord Mayor of Manchester, opened the carnival and stated that "The people of Manchester are never short of generosity, and wanted everyone's support for the carnival and to give generously to this very well worth while cause". Since the first August Bank Holiday Carnival in 1991, with its few tables set outside a pub, the Village Charity has grown to be one of the country's largest lesbian and gay gatherings outside of the London Pride. The four FUNd-raising days which attracted approx 40/50 thousand people over the weekend period have raised tens of thousands of pounds towards helping those in need. Apart from the hard work by those involved in the Village Charity, the local gay businesses, Manchester City Council, the local constabulary and the many stars who gave of their time and effort, a big thank you must go to all you wonderful people out there who have given so freely this weekend and throughout the year. As for the entertainment itself, the list of stars is too numerous to mention, a big pat on the back all the same. One of the things that makes the Mancghester fund-raiser so special is the way that the whole gay village gets involved. Many of the local businesses enter floats, donate cash, and help the charity in many other ways throughout the year. The low level of policing was a credit to the force, and many other forces could take a leaf out of their book when handling lesbian and gay events. The list of thanks could be endless, however I'm sure you won't mind a big pat on the back for the hard working charity members and helpers who not only ober the four days but throughout the year, work their butts off to ensure that all goes well over the Bank Holiday. On a parting note, I would like to offer the organisers a word of warning. Don't change your format, don't get too professional, don't play up to too many stars and their egos, although we do need their attendance to add some glitz to the event. Get local people involved and your success is guaranteed. The local feel will attract people from all over the place, year after year. Go down the same road as London Pride and you will loose the magic that was there in this year's Mardi Gras. Remember what it is all about, who it is in aid of, and who it is that make it successful. Events like this are for the people on the street, the very people who by their participation have made this mad four days another mega success. --------------------------------------------------- CUE THE MUSIC Back with some more summer toones still flowing as fast as ever... Here we go! DONNA SUMMER: I FEEL LOVE (Rollo and Sister Bliss Monster Mix) - I reviewed the latest Rollo releases in last months edition, and here he is again with a stormer remix of the gay anthem from Donna Summer. If you have ever heard the 15min Patrick Cowley remix way back in the early 80's then this one will be right up your street. Where the Patrick Cowley remix was WAY ahead of it's time, the Rollo remix has been speeded up and just right for todays dance floors. If you get the chance to dig out the original 12 incher, give it a listen and let the memories flood back. US Polygram/UK Mercury Records - out now. CHRIS & JAMES: TUNE IN(Animal House Mix) - If like me you are into building base driven, hands in the air, drop out piano ambient house tracks, then you will keek your legs with this. Played loud this reminds me of my favourite track of similar style i.e. Chapter 9: Roller Coaster (Ouch records). This just kicks just as soon as the stylus hits the vinyl with an ass wiggling beat that keeps you wondering 'what can surely follow this?'. UK Stress - out now. VARIOUS: SOME OF THESE WERE HOOJ...TWO. I wouldn't normally review a compilation album but this is one to get before the limited edition E.P. goes out of stock. Hooj Choons are responsible for some of the best dance tracks over the last few years - if you can get them that is! With full length versions of JX: Son of A Gun, DC02: Do what you feel ( the one we broke in Chapps 8 months before anyone else), along with the wonderful Sister Bliss: Can't Get A Man, Can't Get A Job and Tin Tin Out's: Always Something There To Remind Me, this UK Hooj Choons - Released early September. ARMY OF LOVERS: LIT DE PARADE (Transit Remix) They are still on the go and still going very strong if this track is anything to go by. Joseph Watt has mixed this into a wonderful 'AOL' classic that will have you singing along to it by the time it ends. Very catchy melodies found in 'Crucified' from a few years back will give you an idea of what to expect. US Razormaid/Swedish Stockholm Records : Out now. URBAN TRANCE PLANT: ENJOY THIS TRIP ( Gridlock Remix) Well another mighty remix from the kings of the remix industry. As suggested this is a fast (145 BPM) pounder which carries you along on the crest of a trance wave with the stewardess asking if you are enjoying your trip 'trip'. Slip on the earphones if you can't hear this in a club and slip away into a rushing, pulsating wash of euphoria - wonderful. US Razormaid/German Suck Me Plasma: Out now. Need more info on the US remix services drop me a line here or get moi on the net. (Andy Morrison@chapps.fidouk.org) --------------------------------------------------- MERSEY PRIDE Like many other Lesbian and Gay prides that have grown up over the years, the Liverpool version was born out of the idea of one or two dedicated people, willing to give up time effort and sometimes even money. In the short space of a few months the Mersey Pride idea was put together, fund-raising ideas set in motion and a lot of enthusiasm raised as the day came around. Several things, including the weather and some religious homophobes tried to spoil the great day. There were even some, and I am not sure if I disagree with them, who tried to complain about the use of strong language from some of the artists, citing the fact that there were children in the audience. I for one have never said 'a screw' when I think 'a fuck' is better. However there is a time and a place for everything. I think some of the artists might have done our cause some little harm by their lack of thought in their choice of material. On a brighter note, the 1,000/1,200 souls who turned up on the day were treated to some first class cabaret hosted by Robert O'Neil. Acts from all over the country were rushed in, and for once, an event organised by queens, started on time. Must be a bit of a record. The cabaret was kicked off by the one and only(mind you, some would say that she is tall enough for two) Sassy Stryker. One queen was overheard talking to his friend and asked him 'what had happened to the sun'. 'Oh it's OK it's just popped behind Sassy's wig'. Hmmmm! As the afternoon moved on we were treated to vintage performances by Sandra, Prophesy and many other acts that even included belly dancers among their numbers. Although the weather, the first bloody rain for six weeks, cut short the outside entertainment's, the local pubs including the Brunswick, Time Out, The Masquerade, and the Lisbon all benefited by the downpour as everyone headed of for shelter. Well, once wet on the outside you might as well get wet on the inside. In most of them it was standing room only, cheek to cheek as it were, as everyone tried to continue the day out, on the inside. As a political statement, the day was a huge success. I doubt if Liverpool has ever seen anything like it before. Mersey Pride publicity and PR person, Liberal Councillor Steve Radford told Pulse that 'the organising committee were very pleased with the turn out, and with the support given by the local police, the Hoyes fire service, the Red Cross and the local residents'. Councillor Radford goes on to say that 'the only down side was the intrusion of the square by protesters who in my opinion showed an abuse of Christianity and I shall treat them with suitable contempt'. Liverpool Pride has arrived and lets hope it is here to stay. Next years event is already under way and the next fund-raising do is set for Sunday the 3rd of Sept, when another ferry trip has been organised, this time with a Hawaiian theme. Tickets are available from all the usual venues, I imagine they will sell out very quickly, if the last trip was anything to go by. All in all a good day out, and it was good to see the day being supported by people from Manchester, Blackpool, and even from Bonnie Scotland, where the Glasgow Youth Group had its own stall and a few of the SAM guys even turned out for the day. Well done folks. Keep up the hard work and let's have an even bigger day in 96. See you all there. -------------------------------------------------------- SNIPITS "On a sad note this month, we report the death of one of Glasgow's longest serving DJs - Craig Davis. For years Craig worked in Bennets and other discos around the city. Craig had been ill for some weeks but had tried to work as much as possible. He will leave a large hole in the Glasgow music scene and will be sorely missed by friends and clubbers alike. "The Red Admiral Project has this year launched 28,000 sponsored balloons during the London Pride Festival. This years event successfully raised over ukp28,000 which will help to ensure that Red Admiral can continue to provide its free counselling service for people affected by HIV/AIDS. "A Manchester man, John Pennington, has been charged with the attempted murder of a gay chaplain. Pennington, from the city's Salford area has been charged following an incident in the early hours of Saturday the 19th of August. Pennington, 22, has been remanded in custody pending further inquiries. "Bluefest, the Edinburgh International Festival's first ever lesbian and Gay venue has been closed down after rows with the venues new owners. Originally set to run for three weeks at the Calton, the show had tried to find other accommodation. However, lack of advance ticket sales have forced the promoters to abandon this years performances. A Bluefest spokesperson stated that 'I've learned some valuable lessons after all this. Next year Bluefest will be bigger and better'. "US pop record boss David Geffen has made the largest ever single donation to AIDS projects. Geffen has instructed his charitable organisation to hand over $4 million to two New york based AIDS projects, the Gay Men's Health Crisis, and Gods Love We Deliver. 'AIDS must be everyone's fight', said Geffen. 'The rate of HIV infection and the number of people with AIDS is growing, but so too is public apathy'. "A London hospital recently admitted that mistakes in procedures led to one patient on an AIDS ward infecting four others with a life threatening form of tuberculosis. The infections were caused by the strain called Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR). More than 50 other contacts with the man have been identified and are being offered TB tests. The four infected patients are all being treated for the infection. The original patient has since died. ----------------------------------------------- BACKTALK Gay 'Cure' Groups Cause Concern There's growing concern over the setting up of organisations that claim that 'gay life' is a curable disease, a sickness which can with the right treatment be overcome. A number of groups now exist, the main ones, The Freedom Trust, Courage and U-Turn Anglia, offer help to homosexuals and try to convert them to a straight lifestyle. The claims are quite rightly being met with condemnation, and can only fuel a feeling of homophobia, something which so many of us have worked long and hard to conquer. Gay cure groups are often religious and believe that your urges can be reversed through exposure to a few pages in the bible. The offer treatment on the physical side of a same sex relationship through specialist counselling. Much of the treatment is done as part of a residential course, where you are asked to stay in your room to avoid temptation and to take regular readings from the bible instead. As the groups are religious they have charitable status enabling them to fund-raise in order for them to pay for the day to day running of their surgeries. If you decide to back into the closet by seeking treatment, you will also be asked to make a donation to the cause. Gay cure ministers have been operating in the United States for many years and offer a very homophobic view of our natural way of life. The activities of these groups are being closely monitored by gay organisations such as Outrage and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance. They agree that the activities of these ministers could be harmful and want their activities stopped. No one can dispute that the bible says 'Man shall not lay with Man' but then he may not commit adultery, lie, or have sex before marriage. However you would be hard pressed to find someone who hasn't done one of these at least. Perhaps it's time that the church changed it's view on homosexuality and accepted it as a fact of life. But equally it would be good if it distanced itself from the gay cure groups. Where there are many takers for being 'healed' from homosexuality will remain to be seen, as it seems unlikely that sexuality can be changed by counselling. It is also very out of date and bizarre to suggest that being gay is a decease...the whole thing is enough to make Michael Barrymore jump up on stage wearing a sequinned dress and blast out a camp rendition of 'I am what I am' (Gloria Gaynor eat your heart out).
