A friendly march, good weather and a well organised day of events all went to set the tone for the years ahead. One of the most notable factors was the lack of smothering professionalism amongst the organisers. The very fact that most people knew at least some of the organising committee by name helped to give the whole thing a family feel, a feeling of being a part of the make-up of the whole day. It has already been hinted that the second venue in 96 would be held in Glasgow, and why not? Strathclyde has the biggest catchment area in Scotland, and therefore proportionately more Lesbians and Gay men live in Strathclyde than anywhere else in Scotland. Already the pseudo-intellectuals are claiming that the next Pride must remain in Edinburgh. They are claiming that Pride Scotland is at heart a quasi-political event that needs to take advantage of Edinburgh's current and potential status when political issues are to the fore. The London Pride march and festival has been to the fore for many years. However, in the last couple of years it has lost its feeling of the power of the people that was its trade mark for so many years. The London Pride march is not the same fun filled march to the venue that it used to be, and the venue itself has now become no more than space for many to be seen at when trying to rebuild or start up a career in the pop business. This must not be allowed to happen to Pride Scotland. Leave it with the people, for the people and take it to the people. Whether it be in Glasgow, Edinburgh or anywhere else that gay people gather. Don't be afraid to move it, support the people and they will support you with pride. Gordon Gosnell ------------------------------------------------------------------- SCENE: blackpool Tony, your usual and well known scribe has taken some leave from his writings to catch up on other matters. It has been fun having him on board, and maybe we will have the odd piece from him now and then. Thanks again Tony. (Sob, Sob, Sob). This month Gordon has been having a look at some of the forth coming attractions at the pubs and at Flamingo's. It's not only the weather that's heating up in sunny Blackpool. The usual selection of stresses and dresses will be to the fore this month as it's time again for one of Basil's famous all day charity events. The date for the diary is Monday the 29th. Earlier on in the month the club is host to none other than Sassy Stryker. Who is followed later on in the month by Soldier Blue, Ruby Splitz and Dixie. Over at Basil's, some of this month highlights are Mop and Bucket, Lee Star, Bronze, Legs up Lucy and Penny change. All this and the Starship Enterprise light on the stairs on the way in, what else can a girl want. Not to be left out of things, I can recommend a look into the handbag this month, where you will find Sisters Slim, Lizzie Drip, The Party Girls and Steve Wilder. Basil has waited long enough to get the handbag, but now he has he certainly isn't wasting time in establishing it as a must on your tour of the Phallic City. Just in case it has slipped your notice, Pepes this month are having a visit from the one and only Private Dancer. Now count me in for this one. Earlier on in the month there are visits by Ecstacy, E.Z. Rider, and Nick Slade. There must be something there for everyone this month, enjoy and play safe. edinburgh This month it's all about openings, closings, comings goings and changes. As exclusively revealed a few months ago, one of the main gay venues has changed hands. QTs/Insinuendos has been taken over by former partner in the old business Raymond Inverarety(Maggie Raye). The basement part of the premises has already been opened as LADS, a private members club, with the emphases on the butcher side of life. Not so as you would know by the decor-Queen's Velvet-butch, I ask you. Raymond tells us that the upstairs bar-Picardys The Place-will be opened towards the end of August. Just in time for the festival. The theme being that of a cabaret show bar on a par with Madam JOJO's in London. On the theme of changes we hear that plans are well afoot for the re-opening of the old Chapps/Fusion as a bistro. It is hoped that this will also be opened by the end of August. By the time you read this, Eat Out Cafe will have opened it's doors to the gourmets of Edinburgh. Based at the L&G centre in Broughton Street, Eat Out intends to put the emphasis on fresh food, fresh service and fresh ideas that became their trade mark in their Glasgow operation. Round at the Newtown, Andy tell us that by the time we come out, the bar area of-Intense-will have been extended and will now be able to offer a full range of beers.(Now that will stop all you vanilla leather queens getting your stellies stuck in the carpet going upstairs for a pint of cider). glasgow Glasgow's main news this month has been the sudden departure of Calum as the manager of the Waterloo. In the short time he was at the Waterloo he made several changes and seemed to be enjoying his spell in charge. The reigns are once again back in the capable hands of second in charge Joyce, who will oversee thing until a new manager is in place. All this and the forthcoming refurbishment, in the words of the old song 'Times are a changing'. Mind you some things never change, have you seen that black dress Hutton nearly wears? Along the road at Madam Gillespies, you can get you calendar marked for the 12th of August. This sees the launch of Madam Gs Review Party. A wee bird tells me that the staff have been working on some fab routines to be seen every 30/40 min from 9.30pm onwards. To help things along a bit, they have enlisted a wee lassie called HAZEL DEAN, now some of you might just have heard of her. Bet I'm first in the queue! Round at Bennets on Sunday August the 27th it's Anniversary Party time once again and to help celebrate Bobby tells me he has booked the one and only disco diva-direct from the USA-IRENE CARA. Remember Flashdance, Fame and What a Feeling. Irene will be doing a full 30min show. Sure to be a packed house there that night, see you all there. Over at Squires, the boys have extended the live DJs to cover six nights of the week, so no matter what your taste in music is there is always a night or two for you. All this and promotions, bingo and requests, what else could a girl ask for? Well, if you must ask, a pair of clean sheet for the Toga party on the 12th August would be a start. The change of nights to a Tuesday club at Austin's hasn't made any difference to the popularity of Live entertainment. Give a queen a good bit of live flesh and she will support it, one way or another. manchester The August bank holiday sees the biggest annual event in these parts. The Village Charities fund-raiser 'Mardi Gras 95' kicks off on the 5th annual event on August the 25th and runs through until the 28th. For the third time a Market Extravaganza is to be held and in excess of 80,000 people are expected to attend. The highlight of the weekend for some will be the parade of floats, launched this year by Manchester's Lord Provost Joyce Keller. It is expected that the number of floats will be in excess of 60, with some coming from as far as Ireland. On the Saturday at Sackville Park, it's the inter-pub version of Jeux Sans Frontier(It's a Knockout to you), always good for a great time. And on the main stage the one and only Roxy Hart presents her very own version Camp Karaoke. One not to be missed. On the Sunday and Monday on the main stage there are expected appearances by many top stars such as Boy George, Lily Savage, Nikki French and Dannii Minogue. As well as all the various attraction spread out over the four days, there will also be a health tent, woman's only event and of course party after party at the pubs and clubs. So if you hadn't planned to attend, get your butts into gear and support till it hurts, and remember the reason behind all of this and give as generously as you can. See you all there and remember to play safe. midlands Over in Leicester, we hear that the Pineapple Club are to host their 'Out of this World' Planet Hollywood Party on Friday the 18th of August, where DJs Tony and Mark will be presenting a night to be remembered. Top of the bill is the one and only Sugar Kane. Don't forget that there is also a worthwhile prize for the winner of the fancy dress competition. So get the 18th into the diary. Round at the Dover Castle, Terry tells us that since he has taken over, his new stage and lighting have become the talk of the town(now you can see who you are cruising in-between playing pool and lounging about in the beer garden with your pint of traditional ale). Seriously, if the staff hear get any friendlier I will need to be kept on a lead when I'm out, and what about sexy Paul the head barman - well you can just join the queue like the rest of us mortals. It would appear that no dates have been set as yet, but DJ Eddie tells us that Michelle will be making a couple of appearances this month. So watch the bar for details. Gordon(the fat one with the camera), tells me that he has been out and about in another midlands town and his special report will be appearing next month. Can't wait! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- La Cage aux Folles The old cliche 'Life's a Drag' has been done to death many times before. However this time, the David Shaw production of La Cage aux Folles really lives up to the saying in the most outrageous fashion. To say the production was emotional, funny, and musically well balanced would be an understatement. The casting of Stewart McLean in the lead role of Albin/Zsa Zsa was a absolute masterpiece. Set in and around the cast of a gay night-club, the story tells of the problems of the clubs owner when his son arrives at the club to tell of his impending marriage, and of the forthcoming visit of the future in-laws. The resultant playing down of the clubs camp, over the top style has to be seen to be believed. However, no matter how hard they try thing were always going to be difficult. Another star in the making was Robert Anthony Carter in the role of Jacob the butler, this guy was made for camp parts. His portrayal grew from strength to strength throughout the play, and was without doubt a major factor in the plays success. In a earlier interview, producer David Shaw talked at length about the previous versions of the show and said, 'The enthusiasm for this magical musical from cast, musicians, dancers, crew, and patrons just grows and grows. It seems that everyone who has seen it wants to go again.' This production, the forth all in, must rate as the best yet. Steward Mclean's rendition of 'I am what I am' not only raised the hair on the back of my neck, but also brought a tear to my eye. No mean feat. The use of the lighting in conjunction with the beautiful costumes must also go down as a masterpiece. All in all, a really good nights entertainment, which played no small part in educating the homophobes who are convinced that being gay is just a drag. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- SNIPITS "Strathclyde Lesbian and Gay Advisory Forum would like to hear from Strathclyde based organisations looking to apply for small grants from the 'Sessional Fund'. Applications to The GLC project should be in by the 31st of August. "The Government have denied that defence chiefs are to consider an independent study on the ban on gays in the armed forces. The High Court in London upheld the controversial ban last month, but warned that change was inevitable. In NATO only Britain and Turkey still exclude all gays from joining up. It is believed that the ruling is likely to become unenforceable if challenged in the European Court of Human Rights. Military officials are reported as saying that various compromises were possible, such as continuing to enforce the ban in the front line, and in units where people serve in close confines, such as submarines. "The 29th of July saw the launch of the Merseyside Lesbian & Gay Police Liaison Group. The group aims to help promote a positive relationship with the Merseyside Police. The launch will see the distribution of 25,000 leaflets in the keep safe programme. Anyone wishing more information should contact Colin Armistead on Tel: 0151-734 4792/0151. "Local gays in the Kettering area are up in arms after the closure of yet another gay night-spot. In an article in the Kettering Herald and Post, the new owners of the Cotton Club are quoted as having cancelled the towns only gay one nighter claiming that it wasn't busy enough and it was causing friction on other nights. Locals felt that the owners have not given the Sunday night long enough to establish itself. "Manchester is about to really come alive during the August bank holiday(Fri 25th-Mon 28th). The holiday weekend see the Village Charity host it's charity fund-raiser 'Mardi Gras 95' All the moneys raised are being donated to help the fight against HIV and AIDS in the North West. The Charity Info Line is Tel: 0161-237 3131. "Scottish lesbian and gay history has taken a giant leap forward with the announcement that planning permission has been granted for the new community centre in Glasgow. The company set up to manage and lease the property is looking for tenants to fill the last few units. The centre is to open at the beginning of November, and anyone wishing further information should contact either Kim or Duncan on 0141-227 6936. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ TEH EDINBURGH FESTIVALS The Edinburgh Festival looms once again on Scotland's artistic horizon. ScotsGay Editor John Hein has been thumbing through the pages of dead trees that make up the various programmes for the varied Festivals which are THE Festival! Yes, it's that time of year again. The Press Releases have been flooding in to describe why one show is better than another and Gordon has been moaning as to why I'm not as prompt with my copy as he'd like. It's hard, Gordon, it's hard. There are just so many shows on that it gets more and more difficult to choose each year. There are few shows that don't have at least some lesbigay interest - even if it's only the cute Third Witch in some extremely boring production of Macbeth. Anyway, here are a few that I've chosen that might even drag you through from your bijou West Coast Residencette! If it's male nudity that you're after, then modern dance is always a cert. I don't actually have the Official Festival brochure in front of me, but if Mark Morris isn't there, then I'm a Dutchman. Some seriously hunky men to be seen! Also to be inspected closely are The Re-animators with Cafe Flesh. I'm sure you get the idea. Of course, male nudity can usually be found in any production of Equus - and there are three on the Fringe this year. De Montfort University Theatre, Fettes College and Oxford Brookes Drama are the contenders - I've sent you a nice photo of the Fettishists ... Gay acts? They've got 'em! Chief Woofter (in more ways than one - he's Something Important in the Fringe Society) is Simon Fanshawe. He's doing a stint at the Assembly Rooms and is always worth a visit. I've even let you have a photo of him to see what you'd be missing. A considerably cuter woofter is Julian Clary who is also at the Assembly Rooms - but only for four nights. Lazy bugger! And I couldn't get a photo of him from the Fringe Office either - they still haven't forgotten the disgusting state of the one they got back from us after we'd lent it to one of our friends for an evening. Then there's always Richard Herring who I think is mega cute (I still want to have his babies even if he's not a Friend of Dorothy) - he's in two shows: Richard Herring Is All a Man and Lee & Herring's Fist of Fun (both at the Pleasance). Now I know you're not into Bears, Gordon. But Richard Forest is doing a one man show at the Pleasance called Entertaining Changes in which he reveals all in words and song - plus deviations in his private life. >From what I've heard of this show from those who've seen it in London, it's definitely worth the trip from Queen Street. The Joy folk are running a lesbigay venue at the Calton called Blue Fest. There are four shows on there: The Living Juke Box (a parody of life), a queer revue called Plush, Don't You Want Me Baby? - Michael Atavar (Where Shirley Bassey sings, Grant & Phil become porn stars and the Human League dance all night long at the Daisy Disco) and Chloe Poems in Knickers - a socialist transvestite poet. If it's loud popular noise you're into (though I should imagine you're getting a bit long in the tooth for such things these days, Gordon) Damage at Club M8 is offering 'the best sounds in Edinburgh'. Although their gay nights didn't last long earlier this year, they're punting heavily for a mixed crowd to pant heavily on the dance floor. Gay Comic Scott Capurro who wowed us all last year is back - this time at the Pleasance (what a queer venue it's proving to be this year!). 'See him before Channel 4 give him a Friday night series'. Gaytime TV hosts Rhona Cameron and Bert Tyler-Moore are both doing shows. The Musselburgh born Cameron is at the Assembly Rooms whilst Bertie Something is out in the comparative wilds of the Southside Community Centre. Both funny, both worth seeing and both a lot better on the boards than on the telly! CC Blooms is the venue to see Karen Dunbar. Her show, No Laughing Matter, combines cabaret, review and stand-up to give the Fringe a short back and sides. Not my joke, dear - that was in the programme! For a special treat, I suppose I could take you to see some G&S. The Edinburgh University Savoy Opera Group are doing Gilbert & Sullivan Go Wilde - they're pairing the sparkling music and witty lyrics of Gilbert and Sullivan with the humour of Oscar Wilde. More promising is Nancy 3. Hoffman Herself who is doing a one woman Mikado. That I just have to see! The Traverse has Starving Artists with Road Movie 'A passionate, hilarious trip through love and loss in gay America'. That's had rave reviews. There are a number of AIDS/HIV plays: QMW Theatre Company are doing Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart and The Sexact Roadshow's youthful cast are performing Teen Spirit - HIV, AIDS and what it's like to be a teenager in the 90's. I don't have space to mention the Film Festival which is overflowing with lesbigay talent in every sense of the word. ScotsGay Magazine will be covering that in more detail as well as listing a lot more Fringe productions of interest to the show going queer. And the pubs and streets and cafes will be overflowing with people until the small hours. Gordon, there'll be more trade than you can shake a stick at. Prise yourself off that sofa, switch off the telly and get your arse through here for some culture. And don't forget the condoms! ------------------------------- A FERRY NICE MAN INDEED .... When Gordon heard of the boat trip, and the thought of all those bodies in one place with no escape (sorry Ian-no pun meant) there was no way he was going to miss out. And he even managed to write this report for you. The very idea of a ferry trip conjures up scenes of a slow, quiet, uneventful trip down the water. Turn the customers into 260 lesbians and gay men, throw in a disco with Dave and Huey from Garlands, belly dancers, a karaoke and a poetry reading. Stand back and watch the temperature rise. That was the scene on Sunday the 16th of July as the Fairies on the Mersey headed off for their Merseypride fund-raiser. Heading off for their three hour trip from Liverpool, past New Brighton, on to Eastham Locks and home again, the entourage had so enjoyed the trip that many demands were to be heard for a re-run long before they had returned home. A fact instantly agreed to by the organising committee made up from Time Out, Garlands and the Mersyside Committee. September the 3rd has already been pencilled into the diary for the re-run. This time with a Hawaiian theme. So look out your grass skirts folks. On the day the fab sum of ukp552.50 was raised towards the cost of running Merssypride on Pownall Square (In front of Time Out Bar) on Saturday August the 12th. If the boat trip was a guide to its success, then Pride is an absolute banker (Weather provided). On Merseypride itself, there will be 23 big named acts booked, outside bars, sideshows and competitions, a disco, Bar-B-Q and many other attractions. The proceeds are to go to the Village Charity & Friend Merseyside. To help those in need of sustanance, Time Out bar will be open during the afternoon providing free food. In line with many other areas, Merseyside lesbians and gays are on the move, showing themselves up front enjoying themselves, just like any other so called normal person. Liverpool Councillor Steve Radford stated that 'This local series of events shows the clear vibrance and determination of the Merseyside Gay Community to pull together to put Liverpool on the national gay scene map'. Well organised events like these may not have the full power of London Pride (yet), but they all help to promote ourselves to the homophobes in a light other than that painted by the gutter press. Keep it up folks, play hard and remember to play safe! Gordon ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- CUE THE MUSIC This month Andy has selected another five releases to bring to your attention. Remember, you heard them here first. SISTER BLISS: OH WHAT A WORLD. Yup Kate is back with another gay anthem under her belt. Penned by Rollo (as usual), this one is infectious as hell. Ultra high camp lyrics mix with this pounder of a base line. Very much in the same vein as the last two 'Bliss' releases i.e. 'Can't Get a Man, Can't Get a Job' and 'Hold That Sucker Down'. Simply superb! UK Go Beat Records - Out now. HADDAWAY: CATCH A FIRE (Euro house mix) - Haddaway returns to us again with the second release from his forthcoming album 'Drive'. A lot of people in the biz say that this is the track that should have been the first release from the album and not 'Fly Away'. I'm not so sure. Where Fly Away was a brilliant summer club track 'Catch a Fire' is more in the 'pop' style. With 4 mixes on the 12' (including a Tinman Nemises dub) there's a mix to suit most tastes. UK Logic Records - released soon. MEDIUM HIGH: THE PLEASURE - (Chris and James remix) Well it has to be said that I'm playing this to death at the moment. With samples from 'Bumps : I'm Rushing', 'Sir James : Special' and 'Isaac Hayes : Shaft' to name but a few, these are used to full effect as this track builds and builds to an orgasmic piano bashing break - tres tasty! UK High-Life Release, date to be confirmed. DISCO CITIZENS : RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW - Get those hands in the air! Summer is upon us and as usual de-construction deliver the goods. This is the edited mix of the 12 minute piano driven pounder which in my mind is in a class of its own. This blasts out the speakers to the unexpected masses and throws them into an uplifting high. Also includes remixes from CJ Scott. UK Deconstruction Records - out now. J.K. - YOU AND I (1995 remix) - Is this really Corona 'Rhythm Of The Night' I ask myself? Very similar and just as infectious and bouncy! One of the few Italian tracks that have managed to get through to the UK (All the Italian distributors close down for the summer - that's why there is always a glut of new tracks in late August and early September). Find this if you can - recommended. Italian X-Energy. SUGARBABIES: MAGIC IN U - Another MASSIVE club pounder for the summer. I had a lot of problems getting this on 12' so if you are as well - try getting the 'MX Dance' collection CD - It's in there. This is just 'happy' house in all it's wonderful glory. Loads of sudden breaks in the music with the 'Rock Steady Crew' sample 'Are You Ready'! thrown in before the music blasts back into action... If you need more info, you can get me on the net... Andy.Morrison@chapps.fidouk.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------ HEALTH MATTERS Have you noticed the number of people taking drugs in the clubs recently? Mostly it's poppers, but more and more folk are getting into dance drugs; Ecstacy (E), LSD (Acid) or amphetamines (Speed). If you are thinking of taking anything, there are a few things you should know. Firstly the legal situation - Ecstacy and LSD are class A drugs, the same as heroine. Most amphetamines are class B drugs. It is therefor illegal to have, sell or give away any of these drugs with the exception of amphetamines prescribed for your own use. You never really know what you are getting - dance drugs can be mixed with other substances, such as heroin, paracetamol or washing powder. You could end up paying ukp10-15 for a tablet or capsule with no drug content at all! DRUGS + HOT CLUB + DANCING = body temperatures rising to very high levels, loss of fluid and risk of heat-stroke. Mixing drugs or taking them with alcohol, is seriously dangerous. Heavy, prolonged use of dance drugs can compromise your immune system. SAFER SEX AND DANCE DRUGS Dance drugs might help you loose your inhibitions about sex, and can increase sexual sensation, but you might not be in control; you could find yourself in sexual situations you wouldn't otherwise choose to be in. It can also be much more difficult to negotiate and to have safer sex while on any drug. As you know, this puts you at risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infection. REDUCING THE RISK Obviously, the best way to protect yourself from the risk of taking any drug is to avoid taking anything at all, but if you do take any dance drugs:- Talk about safer sex before you take anything. Make sure you always have extra strong condoms and water based lube handy. Don't mix it with other drugs, including alcohol. The more you take the bigger the risk. You are more likely to have a bad trip if you take Acid in unfamiliar or insecure surroundings. Don't top up if you don't feel the effects - it can take up to an hour for the effects to be felt. Drink lots of water and soft drinks to help dehydration and overheating. The Health Matters column this month was written by Mark Dawson, Health Promotion Officer for Gay Men at Greater Glasgow Health Board. Our aim at L.T.C. was to produce an extra strong condom for anal sex with a name gay men could recognise as their own and be proud of, unlike certain other manufacturers who make extra strong condoms who won't acknowledge who or what the product is made for in case it offends their mainstream customers. We also offer a very competitive pricing structure for health authorities and organisations to enable their much needed funds to go further without sacrificing quality, and more important, safety. Boys Own is fast becoming the U.K.'s number one choice for gay men and our customer base now includes T.H.T., The Rainbow Project, B.O.S.S. and organisations large and small all over the country. Our latest addition is Wet Light Formula, a water based (does not contain Nonoxynol-9) condom compatible lubricant packed in a generous 10cc plastic pillow rather than smaller medicinal looking sachets currently available. If you cannot find Boys Own or Wet Light Formula in your area you can purchase a pack of 15 condoms and 15 lubricants for only ukp10 (plus ukp2 P&P) direct from the Leeds Trading Comp Ltd. The Home Office, under paragraph 100 of the immigration guidelines, has written to the couple to inform them that 'In light of Da Silva's character, conduct and associations, it is undesirable to permit him to remain in the UK'. In September of last year, the couple had applied to the Home Office to ask for permission for Da Silva to remain in the country on the basis of the couple's long term relationship. However the current law does not recognise same sex relationships as it does with the heterosexual variety. The paragraph from the immigration guidelines used to bar Da Silva, is usually used for drug smugglers and terrorists. The decision comes a year after Watson had been released from prison after serving three months in jail for the forgery of passport documents to enable his lover to remain in the country. Watson, since his release, has been involved in fighting for equal rights for foreign nationals to remain here in the UK with their lovers. When asked where they go from here, Watson said, 'This is a nasty and ridiculous way to get at us. We will be appealing. The Home Office have got to come up with why they are doing this to us'. Watson added 'I am hopeful of a good chance of winning our case when it is taken to the Immigration Adjudicator'. The government's very own guidelines state that 'One's previous immigration history is no longer relevant once the couple has established a permanent relationship'. It is on this basis that the couple will be appealing against the ruling. It would appear that the government, for what ever reason, is trying to use Watson's conviction to enable them to shoe horn the couple into a scenario that might fit under paragraph 100. Watson has served his time for his conviction, and should be allowed to get on with his life. He and his lover are being given a second sentence for the same crime. If they were heterosexual they would be married and paying a mortgage by now, with no fuss. Mark and Anders must be allowed to settle here and follow their own hearts, like any other couple in love. --------------------------------------------------------------------- VENUES ABERDEEN CLUB CABERFEIDH. 9 Hadden St. Tel: 01224-212181.
