Where the Sun Don't Shine! Once again the gutter press has had its fingers rapped for their - couldn't care less who we hurt attitude - when putting together a story about people with HIV or AIDS. The Sun newspaper was condemned by the Press Complaints Council (PCC) for reporting that the nephew of cabinet minister Peter Lilly was dying from AIDS. Mr Lilly's nephew has since died. This is not the first time that the Sun has used cheap sensationalistic journalism as a headline grabber when reporting on HIV/AIDS matters. Two years ago the Sun reported in its usual sensational manner that Holly Johnson was HIV-positive. Their filth machine once again churned out page after page about Johnson in its efforts to sell copies. The Sun journalist who wrote the piece was promoted out of the gutter as a reward. Holly Johnson was delighted with the ruling and said 'he thought that it was absolutely wonderful that the Sun has had its knuckles rapped'. The PCC's adjudication, believed to be the first of its kind on AIDS related matters, concluded that the Sun's story had 'intruded in a serious manner into the confidential medical affairs of a private citizen and the grief of the immediate family'. The complaint was upheld under Clause 4 of the PCC Code of Practice, despite protests by the top-selling tabloidUs bosses that the editor had not contacted either the manUs family or Peter Lilly, and that all the information in its report was taken from press cuttings from other newspapers. At the end of the day, we will never stop the gutter press from printing this sort of stuff from hacks with little or no moral ethics. However, every time you read that sort of story, fire a complaint off to the PCC and encourage all your friends to do likewise and make sure you don't forget to tell the editor why you are stopping buying his or her rag. Gordon Gosnell. --------------------------------------------------------------- SCENE NEWS Liverpool: In a recent issue, we reported that Garlands and The Escape were battling for supremacy of the clubs. The words 'battle for supremacy' were only used as a figure of speech and were never meant to indicate that either club was fighting with the other. The offending words were those of the magazine and were not a quote either directly or indirectly from either establishment. The Pool's scene is continuing to flourish with all the clubs getting their share of the really busy times at the weekends. The choice is yours - one manUs meat is another manUs poison. Now with these busy periods in mind, and all the lovely profits made during them, the Curzon was so packed the other night that they must have made enough to pay for an exquisite new carpet in the down stairs section. Cabaret is to be found on four nights a week, with a stripper on a Mondays at the Curzon and on a Thursday at the Escape, drag in the Escape on Tuesdays and regular cabaret at Garlands on a Wednesday. Plans are afoot to stage a Liverpool Pride in the square outside Time Out Bar. That promises to be interesting! I will keep you all posted of events as they unfold. Now that the weather is picking up (just above freezing) Time Out are having their regular weekend BBQs, what better way to pass away those lovely summer afternoons. The new Saturday nighter at Garlands was adorned by a PA from Eve Gallagher, who got round to singing her latest single after a few initial hitches. A great night out was had by all. Well, see you all next month. Daniel. Glasgow: It would seem that those amongst you with a wee fetish are getting your own way at last. First Club X was at it with regular fetish nights, and now the Waterloo Bar is to run the same theme every second Wednesday from the 3rd of May. Whether it is cling film, leather or something you would rather not talk about (see cover shot) - get ready for a fun night out, doll up, drag up, make up and camp up. Fun nights are a coming. On the theme of fun nights, the Tunnel is to play host to the Phace West Launch Party on Sunday the 28th of May (11pm till late - with FREE entry and cheap booze promo's). As well as some well known local DJs pounding the sounds and the Phace West team passing the condoms, super trouper Danni Minogue will be strutting her stuff along with her team of lovely dancers in a full and spectacular 30 min show. Watch the pubs and the press for details of the party night. By the time we go to press, details should have been released by the Glasgow Bars AIDS Welfare Fund Committee about the summer bash - on the Renfrew Ferry on Monday the 10th of July. Watch the pubs and clubs for details. Blackpool: The unveiling of the first part of the Flamingo's refurbishment added to the success of another Easter Weekend in Blackpool. Remember last year's final of Mr Gay UK and the photographs of all the contestants in the pool of a gym, (ooh nice!)? Well, the gym is back. Keyline Leisure (owners of the Trades and Highland Hotels) have secured the exclusive use of the Lifestyle Health and Fitness Club ( 22-24 General Street ) and is open 2pm until 10pm every Saturday and Sunday. On offer are a full gym, solarium, sauna and swimming pool. So whether you feel energetic or just feel like lazing around, you know where to go. Admission is only ukp4 and ukp1 for towel hire. If all this is too energetic for you, just cast your mind back to those great days disco days (I was in nappies then) - (we are not interested in your fetishes dear - Ed) and the sound of the Three Degrees. This brilliant trio are appearing at the Flamingo on 26th of May - I can't wait. No I won't be wearing my bubble perm. All of Blackpool's venues are open all day throughout the season. One to watch out for is the next charity bash. See you all around, some more around than others. Love Tony. Midlands: Before we let loose the local gossip-an apology to the winner of the Leicester heat of the Mr Gay UK contest. In the coverage we stated the winner to be Darren when it should have read Damian - Sorry! The Leicester scene is buzzing with excitement, as in addition to the present facilities, Terry, the new owner of the Dover Castle, informs us that he has applied for a late night license, and that the new pool room/lounge will soon be open. Topped up with the friendly Paul, John and William, the staff are looking forward to meeting you all. (See advert) At their recent Easter all day AIDS charity event, staff, customers and friends at the Pineapple Inn all helped to raise a massive ukp1,700 (and rising). Well done folks, keep it up and keep the monies coming in. One place that seems to be taking off is the Sunday night at Kettering's Scandals nightclub. A fab turn out on Easter weekend to see the fabulous 'Dame Edna Experience' gave a great buzz to this now very popular Sunday nighter. See you all next month. Dale. Edinburgh: As we go to press, we notice that Brian Le Vell has opened the old Chapps bar and re-named it Fusion. Scotland's Mr One Nighter seems to be putting down some roots at last. Well it makes a change from the Grecian 2000, me dears. The 1995 Edinburgh Festival Fringe sees the first ever lesbian and gay venue - Venue With A Conscience - sited at the Calton, behind the Royal Mile. The programme is to consist of theatre, dance, music, exhibitions and a late night entertainment club. There will also be space available for fund-raising events. Siobhan Jamison of Blue Moon Productions said 'It is important that this event is seen in an international context, whilst still being able to promote the Scottish gay community'. Leo Devlin of Blue Moon Productions pointed out that 'it is not before time that the Scottish gay community had such an event in the world's leading arts festival'. For more information contact either Leo or Siobhan on 0131-557 0911. One place that will be even busier (if that's possible) during the festival is Edinburgh's only sauna for gay gentleman - No 18 in Albert Place/Leith Walk. Owner Mrs Dykes tells us that it has become so popular that talks have started up with regards to a possible extension to allow even more to use the facilities. SAMUs Gay Men's Project are holding a V.E. day party with a difference in CC Blooms on Monday the 8th of May. The theme RMilitary ManoeuversS will feature goodies such as Strip the Squaddie, Carry Out Condom Kits (C.O.C.Ks) a Rubber Roadshow and a Join Up stall. Future events include Fetish Night II, and a Tall Ships Party. Tel:- 0131-555 4850 for details. ------------------------------------------------------------- HEALTH MATTERS The PULSE doctor has had a few letters in the last few weeks. We are sorry but it is not possible to answer them on a personal basis. Below are some of the most common ones. Q) My boyfriend and I are soon to head off to Tenerife on holiday. We are both a bit worried about skin cancer. What precautions can we take? A) You are both right to be concerned about the possibility of skin cancer. If you burn quite easily, you are right to take sensible precautions. Here are a few simple tips: -Avoid the midday sun - donUt sunbathe between 11am and 2pm. -Use sunscreen creams on your skin, choose the right sunscreen for your particular skin type. -Re-apply the sunscreen frequently (every 2-3 hours). -Use good quality sunglasses to protect your eyes. -Remember - Slip on a top, Slop on the sunscreen, Slap on a hat. Q) I have just started up a new relationship and we are both keen to screw each other, but are unsure what type of condom is best to use. A) You should always use the extra strong variety that carries the British Standards Kite Mark. e.g. Durex Extra Strong or Mates Super Strong. The German HT or the Dutch Gay Safe variety are also recommended. Try them all out till you find which one you are most comfortable with. Remember: always to use a water based lubricant such as KY, Aquagel or Liquid Silk. Q) My ex has just told me that he has Gonorrhoea, what should I do? A) It is important that you attend a sexual health clinic as soon as you can. Phone for an appointment and go along for a check-up. Whether you have symptoms or not (some people do not have any symptoms), when you attend the clinic, they will carry out certain tests to see if you are infected or not, and if required give you the appropriate course of treatment. You will also be encouraged to inform any other recent partners to do likewise. In future try using condoms, it really is the only way. ----------------------------------------------------------- SHE Welcome to PULSEUs Women's pages and to Vicky our Women's Editor. Each month Vicky will be writing for you on a number of topics, doing interviews and generally filling in all those bits you have been missing out on up to now. NO ROOM AT THE INN... Picture the scene; it's Friday night and you have just ended another working week. All you want to do is go out and enjoy yourself. You phone all your pals and make the arrangements for a good night on the town, run the bath and make sure that there isn't a hair out of place. So there you are, all ready and excited about the prospects. Well add this to the picture, say you live in Glasgow - youUre in a wheelchair - and you want to go out on the scene. Where do you go? Good question! All except one of the pubs have stairs that either lead into the establishment or to their toilets. As for the toilets, going by what is on show, aren't disabled people supposed to go to the loo? I can understand that most of the gay pubs and clubs in the likes of Glasgow are housed in old buildings, and that you cannot go knocking down walls willy nilly just as you please just to accommodate wheelchair access. But before any of the pub and club owners/managers take the huff, I am quite well aware that the gay scene is not the only place guilty of this; No not at all. But what I am saying is that the Glasgow scene consists mainly of pubs and clubs, with the exception of one cafe, which incidentally has stairs as well, so where are you supposed to meet people and mix with your friends? I know that business is business and people are not running charities (nobody wants charity!) but wouldnUt it be nice when it comes to talking about refurbishments, if the owners could put the needs of disabled customers before the need to keep such a tight rein on the profit margins. This is one time when money spent would attract a lot more in the way of new customers, who would be spending cash that they might have been spending elsewhere. Now, if you were in the position to help more people wouldn't you sleep better at night? So What??? There is a billboard advert for football gear on display at the moment, with the slogan - 'Who says that gals look better with their kit off' alongside a beautiful South American lady. What do you mean you haven't noticed it, are you blind or what? It's everywhere. Anywhere, feminists all over the place are going crazy, branding it as outrageous, offensive and insensitive. Why? for goodness sake, the advert is done in good taste and shouldn't be taken other than in the light-hearted fun way it was intended. The whole thing is seen through the eyes of a teenage boy (maybe that's the problem, if the roles were reversed there wouldn't be such an uproar. As I have already said, it was done very tastefully - me thinks, hmmm...What sort of imagination do some women have, basically that is all the poster is - something to tease your imagination. This leads me to wondering if these are the same women who watch programmes like Baywatch or Gladiators, where there are dozens of women - no, girls running around in less than a football top and having suggestive remarks made to or about them. But that's OK because that's entertainment, the same as this poster, entertaining and advertising, come on ladies lighten up a bit eh! I have only two thing left to say on the subject, firstly, it shows that once again women are taking the lead role in what was once ( and possibly still is) known as - A Man's Game - by looking a damn sight better in a football top than any man ever has, and secondly where can I get the poster? See you all next month! - Vicky. --------------------------------------------------- WOMEN'S CONTACTS Using Contacts Send your reply in an envelope with the box number on the TOP RIGHT corner. Both were cut free by the police with bolt cutters after half an hour. The week of action marked the agency's second, and hopefully last anniversary. The week began with over 100 women - single mothers - new partners - and absent mothers converging on Parliament for a Women's Lobby and Speak Out to squash the myth that only men are opposed to the act. MPs were informed of the poverty, fear of violence and repression imposed on women and their families by the CSA. The week of protest, saw events all over the country, including a picket of the home of MP Alistair Burt, the junior minister responsible for the act. Wages Due Lesbians, who spoke at the women's lobby, have been campaigning as a part of the Campaign Against the Child Support Act (CACSA) since it began in 1991 for lesbian motherUs rights to have children, including by donor insemination, and to get income support for the work of raising them. On Thursday the 18th May, CACSA will be represented at the Woman's Work of Building New Movements-taking place at 230a Kentish Town Road, London, at 7pm. This is one of a series of meeting being presented by Housewives in Dialogue in preparation for the biggest ever women's event ever-the UN Fourth World Conference on Women being held in Beijing, China in September. Other women will speak about the massive opposition to the government's Disability Discrimination Bill and stopping the Pentra trial in which HIV + children are being given the toxic drug AZT. Anyone wishing further information please contact Wages Due Lesbians on 0161-344 0758 or 0171-837 7509. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- OBITUARY David Marshall Senior was found murdered in his flat in Prague on Friday 5th of May. As we go to press, no further details are available. David was a good friend of Pulse who also contributed to a number of other lesbigay publications over the years - both under his own name and several pseudonyms. He was Arts Editor of Gay Scotland for a number of years before his work as a computer programmer started to take him to far away places like the Czech Republic where he died. Born in Singapore, David was brought up in Northern Ireland, but moved to Manchester when he went to University there. He was heavily involved in the Young Liberals and, on a delegation to a Youth Conference in Moscow outraged the Communist Organisers with his own personal brand of radical faggotry (which had involved the purchase of a large and outrageous wardrobe including a disgusting pink suit which only David would have considered wearing along with one of his beloved bowties). On leaving University, David worked for a number of employers before going freelance and it was typical, when he did, that his companies had such names as Duke of Plaza Toro Limited and Ghost of Rinka Limited (the latter named after Norman Scott's dog who was shot during the Jeremy Thorpe affair). David lived in Scotland for several years and was able to indulge his passion for Single Transferable Votes by counting a number of ballots for OUTRIGHT Scotland as well as serving as returning officer for the Green Party and, of course, the Liberal Party - which he joined in preference to the Liberal Democrats. At the last General Election, he stood as the Liberal Party's candidate in North East Fife against the sitting Liberal Democrat MP Menzies Campbell. He received a miniscule vote - in fact, the joint lowest vote of all the Party's candidates. But, to David, winning wasn't the point of standing - putting his politics across was the important thing. He was also well known in the on-line community as vid@cix.compulink.co.uk. He hated being called Dave and chose vid as his account name on the grounds that if somebody was going to abbreviate his name, it was bloody well going to be him. David leaves three cats, his mother, brother and, of course, our mutual lover Stiubh. He was a nice guy and we shall all miss him greatly. John Hein ------------------------------------------------------------------ FOCUS This month, the roving camera was out and about at the Dolphin in Wakefield and at Primo's and the New Penny in Leeds. The Dolphin at Wakefield might be the town's only gay bar, but the quality however is not on the short list. Managed by Stuart, the Dolphin lives up to its reputation as a fun bar. A very very busy bar, just the place if you are a bit down in the dumps, a hectic night of fun and frolics with free admission any night is sure to perk you up. The choice of entertainment includes - cabaret - crazy bingo - camp karaoke - the resident drag show - strippers and the occasional visit by one of PULSE's 'good looking' reporters!!!!!! Seriously though, the quality of the FREE entertainment would put many of the more expensive venues to shame. Well worth a visit if you want a good night out. Over in Leeds, the city's main disco - Primo's - is the place to be, especially if you like a big long one! No silly, I mean the Saturday night. If you haven't had enough during the week, Saturday nights at Primo's run through until 6am on Sunday - For the serious clubber me thinks. On the theme of big ones, have you seen Primo's new 16 screen video wall, for those who like to overdose on their favourite artiste, this will have you in your 16th heaven. (Well 7th heaven didn't fit). Various nights include - Sweatbox with Glen and Baz - Extravaganza also with Glen and baz- Party Night featuring Amanda J- and Delicious with Nick Rodgers and Duncan Betts. Cabaret spots are also a feature of Primo's as is their 'In for a Penny, In for a Pound' on a Monday night. Get in B4 11pm for 1p and your pint is only ukp1 all night - can't be bad. Before you head off to the club, a visit to the pub is always on, and a favourite of ours is the New Penny. Managed by Graham, the Penny is Leeds' longest running gay bar. When we called it was mobbed to say the least. A young vibrant feel to the place was matched by a mixture of all types and ages, from the young at heart, to a crowd of leather queens all trying to out macho each other. All seemed at home and mixed well. This is probably one of the reasons why the Penny is so successful. A very friendly bar staff and bouncy DJ made sure that the night went with a swing. --------------------------------------------------------------- BACKTALK The Men With The Pink Triangle A number of years ago I wrote an article after visiting a concentration camp in Austria. 50 years after the Second World War, with the re-unification of Europe under way, this is something I would like to recount and share with you. My generation missed out on all the horrors of war - however the history of it should never be forgotten. On the 19th of July over 200 delegates from an ILGA conference took part in a commemorative service at the former concentration camp of Mauthausen in Austria. This multi-denominational service was held in front of the only plaque raised to the memory of the many Lesbians and Gay men tortured and murdered during the war. During its short life, the camp housed over 206,000 people of which 110,000 were killed. When you look at the conditions of the place, maybe the ones who died early on were the lucky ones. People were worked until they dropped, they were clearly worked to death. The phrase 'being worked to death' has now taken on a whole new meaning for me. When I went to board the bus for the two hour journey to the camp, I felt a little nervous and unsure of how I would react to the day in front of me, despite a vivid explanation of things by our host group HOSI Linz. On our arrival we were faced with what looked like any other stone built fortress with rows of wooden huts in the middle. Nothing so special in that I thought, boy was I ever so wrong. What I found inside has left a mark on me that I doubt will ever be erased, and I am not ashamed to say that along with a great many others I wept openly. The conditions of the camp were clean and fresh, I doubt if the inmates ever knew such basic conditions existed in that godforsaken place. At least I didn't have to suffer the stench of the shit and piss that must have mixed freely with the continuous smell of death from the overworked ovens being used to rid the camp of the unwanted bodies. I have no intention of telling you the many and varied ways that were used to torture and kill. This you should find out for yourself. Before I went to the camp I believed that every lesbian and gay man should visit such a camp, now I believe that every human being should go as a part of their education, as what I felt can never be found in a text book. Maybe when I have had time to think it over, I might be able to begin to try and figure out how this murderous treatment of fellow human beings could ever have happened in the first place. If there is a God out there, he owes me an apology, even after all this time I am still so bloody angry. Gordon G Gosnell ------------------------------------------------------------------ SNIPITS For those wishing to find a different mode of transport to London for this years Pride, might we suggest booking your seats on Priscilla - Queen of the M1. Liverpool's Labour-controlled city council is to consider offering its lesbian and gay staff two hours a month in which to attend an in-house gay group. The proposals are set out in a document to be put before the equal opportunities sub- committee. A council spokesperson goes on to say 'It is unlikely that the coverage given to the case would change the council's equal opportunities policy'. Pride Scotland are to stage a weekend of fund-raising events in Glasgow on the 28th-30th of April. Included in the list of events are a disco in Bennets on Sunday the 30th, and a visit to all the pubs on the 29th to raise awareness of the event, and of course to raise funds. So give generously. For further Pride information call the office on 0131 - 556 8822. Defence Secretary Malcolm Rifkind recently pledged to keep gays out of the armed forces. The pledge comes after reports in a national newspaper that a Labour government would scrap the ban in our armed forces. Mr Rifkind confirmed that the government had no plans to change the current policy. Liverpool's lesbian and gay writers group 'Queer Scribes' is to host a writing course facilitated by the Irish poet and fiction writer Mary Dorcey. The course is open to all regardless of experience and will take place on the 4th, 11th, and the 18th of May. Places are limited and pre-booking is required. Costs are ukp2 waged and ukp1 unwaged. For Info call 0151 - 260 8990. Gender bender Boy George and the co-writer of his latest book, Take It Like A Man, are to address students at Oxford Union on sex, drugs, music and religion. It is claimed that the book will shock his fans with reports of his affair with Culture Club drummer John Moss and of his addiction to hard drugs. The BBC is planning to show a new lesbian and gay current affair programme. The still un-named programme being broadcast about the end of June, is to be made by the makers of the Big Breakfast Show. The 'upbeat and entertaining' format is expected to run for six weeks. ----------------------------------------------------- EAT OUT NO MORE Amidst claims of broken agreements and in a sudden early morning move, almost without warning, Mr Douglas Crukshanks of Village Corporation, the lease holders for the properties trading as Eat Out Cafe and GHQ evicted the cafe proprietors (the S&N Partnership) giving only one hour's notice to leave the premises. Glasgow's only Lesbian and Gay cafe has been a roaring success in its short six month lifespan. The first thing Mr Nash of the S&N Partnership knew of things was a letter he received in the post the very same morning informing him of his position. By the time he arrived at the premises, the locks had been changed and Mr Cruikshanks accompanied by a couple of bouncers had taken control of the cafe premises. Mr Nash was told by a bouncer that he was there to ensure that Mr Nash left the premises. Obviously shocked by the move and the intimidatory presence of the bouncers Mr Nash felt that he had no option but to gather up his personal possessions and leave. He was not allowed to take any of his business belongings. Eat Out has become a very popular part of the scene in Glasgow mainly because of the good service, good food, and friendly staff. The scene in general supported it well. It will remain to be seen if Mr Cruikshank's pub and cafe continue to attract the same level of support after this. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTACTS Blackpool/NW 38 6'1" Dark greying hair. PA3 3YA. ------------------------------------------------------------ CUE THE MUSIC Welcome to our new resident music column with Andy Morrison. Apart from being responsible for the music purchases at Chapps Bar (Edinburgh) for the last seven years, Andy also operated Chapps DJ services which supplied a vast number of the top European & UK DJs with 'DJ only remixes'. Over the years he has also written for a number of magazines and is currently about to start writing for a music paper in the states. Welcome on board Andy! Already huge in the continent we see the new release from MASTERBOY: Is This The Love released here via Polydor on the 9th of May this should do well in both the clubs and in the bedrooms with its pounding base and piano breaks. Very much in the same vein as Haddaway and the logic record stable (Snaps etc) in four mixes there should be one to suit your taste. JOANNA KAY: IUm Free (escapade mix) - I have to admit when this one arrived at the office, it was left in a pile of new material for me to eventually get around to. As usual this is the one I should have been playing 'sooner than later'. Hailing from Scandinavia this is a thundering house floor filler and as a debut single will see Miss Kay doing well both at home and in the UK. Released via Edel UK on the 15th May. BLACK BOX: Not Anyone - The Italian giants are back. After 4 top ten smashes, a change of label and a new voice in the form of Charvoni (remember 'Always there' back in 1988). This may not be as instant as 'Ride On Time' but it may be a grower. Personally out of the four mixes we were supplied with there wasnUt one that stood up and shouted 'hit' - who knows. Released via Mercury on 30th May. E-GROOVE meet HYPER GO-GO: Move Your Body - A club stormer that will be top of the charts in no time. As I write, this track is already getting rave reviews from the big names in the industry. Don't need to say much other than - give it a listen. Released via Mercury on May 1st. JEANIE TRACEY AND BOBBY WOMACK: It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World. (Band of Gypsies remix) Well, Miss Tracey has come on a long way since her US Megatone record days. Remember 'Time Bomb' and 'Don't leave me this way'. This has to be one of her finest performances in a long time and should give her the credit she so rightly deserves. The 'Band of Gypsies' do their thing once again and produce a stunner of a track that should see the club dance floors thumping throughout the summer. Released 24th April via Pulse 8 records. --------------------------------------------------------- VENUES Aberdeen CLUB CABERFEIDH 9 Hadden Street, Tel: (01224) 212181. Thu-Sun 9pm-2am.
