The Nobe Art of "Persuasion" Unless you have been living on the moon or have moved to an island without communications, you cannot fail to have noticed the coverage in the "popular" press of Outrage's so called Outing of members of the church hierarchy. Paul Johnson of the Daily Mail described Outrage's Peter Tatchell as a "homosexual terrorist" and called on the Director of Public Prosecutions to intervene and stop Outrage's outrageous behaviour. Tatchell claimed to have persuaded the Bishop of London, Dr David Hope, to come out. Refering to a letter from Outrage, Dr Hope described it as "seriously intimidatory or worse" but said that he had ruled out legal action. Legal experts said that "the letter contained no specific demands or threats of menace, and did not amount to blackmail as it was intended for the bishop's eyes only". In a strident leader, the Guardian wrote that Tatchell was "a liar and a hypocrite". While the Independent declared "There can be few less attractive characters in British public life than Outrage's Peter Tatchell". Tatchell himself on morning television claimed that the "Ends justify the means". Tatchell went on further to say "They have totally ignored the church's hypocrisy which has made our campaign necessary. Straight critics have never shown similar indignation about the homophobia which is wrecking the lives of lesbian and gay people". Over the past few month the matter of gay clergy has been well and truely debated in the national press. Last November, Outrage outed ten bishops on the steps of Church House which prompted a statement from several of the men named, although none admitted to being gay. One point seems to have been overlooked in all of this. At the end of the day, what this boils down to is a matter of civil liberties. Those outed, unless I am wrong, are entitled to the same privacy in their own lives as you or I would expect, whether or not they are public figures. If Peter Tatchell was into some obscure sexual practice that most people thought to be disgusting, although legal, he would be the first to shout foul if the tabloids got hold of it and splattered it all over the front pages. Peter would in this case be quite right to complain and ask to be left alone. As would the bishops. Gordon Gosnell ******************* LIVERPOOL The Liverpool scene continues to buzz at a vibrant pace with the Escape getting even busier, so much so that it fills to capacity quite early on a Saturday. In order to avoid a very long queue, I would advise potential visitors to be in by 11pm. The management have organised a special coach to the all-nighter at Central Park Manchester, departing every Sunday morning at 2.30am, returning at 9am. Tickets cost ukp9 which includes travel and entry to the club. For a cheap pre-club drink Time Out still can't be beaten. With convivial surroundings and very few beverages costing more than ukp1.30, it goes a long way to be bettered. On the other hand, if loud music, fashion, image and attitude are more up your street then Baa Bar is for you. This mixed bar is the place to see and be seen and you can get your advance tickets for Flesh at the Hacienda at the same time. Le Bateau on Duke Street played host to a leather and rubber fetish anything goes night on Tuesday 14th March and houses "Voodoo" every Saturday night, which is excellent for anyone who enjoys a bit of straight baiting. GLASGOW Despite the mis-reporting in other papers, it would appear that the great one nighter himself - Brian Le Vell is to stay at GHQ. Many had thought he had been ousted from his perch, well was that a GH-ost in the disco box last Saturday? With Brian's reported interest in the old Chapps Bar in Edinburgh, we are left wondering if he is spreading himself a bit thinly (like myself, that would make a change, eh Brian!). On the subject of gossip, I hear that some of you are not sure if the Waterloo's new Manager - Calum - is actually gay. Well, just have a look at the new stellies he has bought for a Saturday night out. Jim Glenn, Chairman of the Glasgow Bars AIDS Welfare Fund, tells us that plans are well afoot for the summer bash on the ferry. Watch this space for details of this and the Ball being planned for next year. Over at Divally's, I hear that the outrageous staff are the talk of the town with their sometimes over the top form of entertainment. So, if it's some good clean outrageous fun you're after, why not give them a try? BLACKPOOL Oh boy, are you in for a treat this month! Yes, the Pleasure Beach is open again and guess what? - up until Easter, rides are only 50p (no, not me, silly). Where else can you and all your friends scream as you ride a big one together? There is also great news on the night life front. On April the 13th and Easter Saturday, the Flamingo is open until 3am. Not only that, there is also first class entertainment galore with Lizzie Drip, Roxy Heart and the brilliant Dame Edna Experience just to name a few. The Blackpool Tower will also be open to give you 518ft 9in (ooh!) of pleasure if the outdoors are to much for a little flower such as you. For the theatre queens amongst you, there are a couple of dates for the diary. From Tuesday the 2nd - to Saturday the 6th of May, the Royal National Theatre are doing the Joe Orton comedy "What The Butler saw". Starring Richard Wilson (Victor Meldrew), you are promised a night where caution, clothes and sanity are thrown to the wind. I'm all for that as most of you will already know. On the other hand, if you want to see a fast moving, high camp musical, The Grand is showing "Return To The Forbidden Planet" from Monday the 29th of May - Saturday the 3rd of June. Be warned that tickets for this excellent show are selling fast. More on the summer shows next month. With all this going on, if you haven't yet organised anything for Easter why not give us a try? I am sure you will not be disappointed. Don't forget to try Funny Girls, the new show with Betty Legs Diamond, Zoe and the cast is just out of this world. See you all next month. Tony. MIDLANDS This month's gossip is a bit thin on the ground due to a bout of illness on my part, not that there is ever any shortage of gossip where there are queens involved. Kettering's Sunday nighter "Scandals" appears to be the place at which to be seen. Manageress June has just announced that a "Fun Party" has been organised for Easter Sunday. So, if you have still got that old Easter bonnet and maybe the dress to go with it, I'll see you there. Over in Leicester, the Pineapple Inn has been granted a six day (Mon-Sat) 2 am license (see advert for details). Mark and Philip tell us that a new dance floor, lighting system and disco equipment are planned for the near future. So get your boogie shoes out and join the night set. The Leicester Place, the city's largest night-club, has recently held it's heat of the "Mr Gay UK" competition which was won by local boy Daren. Good luck in the final. It is now official, the Dover Castle has been bought over by the lovely Terry, who has been telling us of some of the exciting changes he has in mind, and it looks as if you are going to have to keep your eye on the Castle in the near future. Well, that's it, see you all next month. Dale MANCHESTER With the ensuing summer months just round the corner, and the little bit of extra sunshine that goes along with them, Canal Street is begining to bristle with bodies. This year as summer approaches, more than ever before, the difficult decision will not be which pub to stand outside whilst having ones pint or small sherry, but where to sit and watch the cream of Manchester's gay scene go by whilst having your cappuchino a la Manchestero. No doubt spurred on by the success of Metz, the upstairs at the Manto is now a servery offering delicious food and snacks. Those continental queens, I don't know! Another much improved cafe is Blue Cafe on Sackville Street, once again offering a fine selection of food. The former Safeway dance night at Central Park has become Danceteria. Opening at 2.30am it goes on until the mid-afternoon. For those who like things a little less frantic, check out the newly refurbished upstairs bar at Napoleons. One of the best nights to visit is on a Wednesday, when Miss Stella Artois hosts a "Kamp Karaoke". Admission is free before 11.30pm Glenn and Brendon have just announced that Strangeways has been "temporarily postponed" whilst they jet of to Barbados for a well earned rest. This follows on the back of the problems with the venue. We shall keep you up to date as news comes in. A couple of dates for the diary, firstly, a public meeting being called by the Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit on the 27th of April (7.30pm) in Follies at 6 Whitworth Street. Speakers include, Kursad Kahramanoglu of Unison,Mark Watson from Stonewall, and Matthew Davies from Wilson and Co, Solicitors. The subject being "The love that dare not board a plane". Secondly, Wednesday the 3rd of May sees the return of Healthy Gay Manchester's C*M*Y*K club event (tentatively titled "the son of C*M*Y*K) at Manchesters Equinox. We are assured you are promised a night of sheer glamour and kinkiness. ***************************** SHE Welcome to PULSE's first ever Women's pages and to Vicky our Women's Editor. Each month, Vicky will be writing for you on a number of topics, doing interviews and generally filling in all those bits you have been missing out on up to now. This month, Vicky has tracked down London comedienne Maria Esposito, and put a few of the day's burning questions to this very funny woman. Unless you have had your eyes, ears and everything else closed recently you'll know that Wednesday 8th March was International Women's Day. In recognition of the day, Glasgow's Lesbian and Gay cafe "Eat Out" hosted a cabaret dinner at the bargain price of ukp10 per head. A full house (including some men as well), were entertained to forty five minutes of fast, witty, and very personal views on life by the superb Maria Esposito. Who? I can hear you blind couch potatoes asking...well for those who don't know her, apart from being a gorgeous Italian in her thirties, Maria is a very talented actress, writer and comedienne. After she had entertained us so brilliantly, I just had to grab her (honest Mandy, it really was for an interview) for a little chat over a bite of lunch, which surprisingly went a little like this...... You have previously performed at Glasgow's Citizens Theatre and also at the last Glasgay, now you are working up here again, what is the big attraction for you in Glasgow? The people up here are so friendly, when they speak to you they really look you straight in the eye. Also there are so many amazing shops and so many bargains, although I think I've bought them all already. What are your plans for the future, both nationally and whilst you are here in Glasgow? At the moment I am working at the BBC on a new comedy series called PULP VIDEO, to be screened in the summer. Also I shall be representing Europe in the Michigan Women's Festival of Comedy and Music and I'm hoping to go to Sydney next February for the Mardi Gras. What is your involvement in PULP VIDEO? I shall be script editing and deciding which lines go in or out. It is a big step forward in a male dominated world. You seem to travel a lot, do you enjoy that part of the job? Yes, especially Australia and the States, I think everything is possible there, people praise each other just for trying something. They are young countries, there the people look to the future and not back at some old war or other. Have you any plans to come back to Scotland? I will be back for Pride Scotland, performing at the Festival Theatre on June 18th this year. I would also like to tour Scotland by car at some point. A little birdie tells me that you are to become a sports commentator. Yes, I shall be on Talk Radio. I used to be a presenter of GLR, so I was really pleased to be offered the chance to do it again. Are you a sporty type of a person? I like alternative sports. I started skiing when I was eight years old, I am not professional though, more of a recreational skier, I am however a county champion swimmer. My sister is a diving coach at Crystal Palace, so maybe it's in the family. What makes you laugh? I like stand up comics like Robin Williams, I enjoy comedy with a serious side to it. Such as the Tom hanks movie "Big". What do you think of other gay comedians? There are too few lesbian comediennes. Heterosexuals are still afraid of lesbians, it is still a case of lock up your wives and daughters there's a lesbian about. However at the same time they will laugh at camp gay comedians such as Kenneth Williams, John Inman and Julian Clary. What do you like to do to relax? I love to watch TV, the X-Files, Brookside, and Coronation Street. Bet Lynch is priceless, and Raquel is so camp. Finally, what do you think of International Women's Day? I think it is a good celebration, but it shouldn't stop at one day, it should be integrated into everyday life, especially as this is Lesbian Focus Year. Nevertheless, during the early nineties things quietened down in the Athens of the North. Some people put the blame for this on the shoulders of the gutter press who, in their search for sensationalistic 'journalism' claimed that Edinburgh was the AIDS capital of Europe. Fire Island and Key West both closed down and, more recently, the Laughing Duck and Chapps have gone the same way, although moves are afoot to re-open Chapps. All four were major players in Edinburgh's gay scene. However, once again Auld Reekie's scene is flourishing with even more people proving that the pink pound works. The appearance of a nascient gay village has gone a long way to proving that unity is the way forward. Gordon Gosnell has had a look at what makes the Edinburgh scene tick. Since I last looked at the Edinburgh scene it has gone through many changes, the most important one being that it is a lot larger with a good variety to choose from. On the disco scene, it is disappointing to note that there is no full time club. The capital's needs are served by two part timers. JOY at the Calton, although only open on a Saturday lays claim to being the largest gay club in Scotland. A membership (free) club on two levels, it is run by former Blue Moon proprietors Alan Nicholls and Maggie McKeown. Entry is ukp4 before midnight and ukp6 thereafter. FROX (formerly Buster Browns) is the city's latest addition to the scene. Club owner and manageress Karlynne Sellstrome - formerly of the Laughing Duck, hopes that the emergence of a new weekend club will help to put the community spirit back into Edinburgh and that all the pubs and clubs will be able to work together. FROX, a large one roomed club with plenty of seating and a well placed bar, has the potential to become another Fire Island. Only time and Karlynne's expertise will tell. FROX is open Friday - Sunday. Over in the pub scene Maggie Rayes (formerly French Connection) has established itself as a small but very well proportioned inpromptu cabaret bar. When we were in, it was obvious from the interaction of the punters with the Karaoke host Paul, that the locals were very much at home and a part of the family. A good fun night out. Apart from the Karaoke, there are quiz nights, party nights with special themes and the appearance of star cabaret acts from all over the country. Our next port of call was the Newtown Bar. A traditional style bar run by Andy and Ray formerly of Chapps. A good mix of ages and types seem to frequent the Newtown. As well as serving all your favourite beers, bar lunches are served at a very reasonable price. The Newtown has become quite popular with the hairy faced variety and it is no surprise that the new and more raunchy cruisy cellar bar "INTENSE" has become very popular at the weekends (open Friday and Saturday at the moment, although plans are afoot to open on other nights in the summer months). Up the road we find QTs, a dual purpose bar/cabaret club run by Jimmy and Helen, offering twice monthly cabaret nights. During the week you can choose from strippers, karaoke, pool, and, on a Sunday, why not pop in for a spot of brunch and the Sunday papers whilst listening to a little light music? Just the way to unwind after a hectic weekend. During the Edinburgh Festival QTs/Insinuendos becomes one of the main cabaret venues in town, with appearances every day by many of the festival regulars. Less than 100 yards away, we come across CC Blooms. CCs is a very, very busy pub with its own inhouse disco in the basement and restaurant on the ground level. At the moment this would appear to be the pub to be seen at. Very friendly and efficient bar staff keep things rolling along even when it gets packed. A varied mix of clientele ensures that everyone is catered for. A few door along the street we find Route 66, the latest addition to the scene. Owned by Tennents, and managed by Stevie, 66 has already laid its claim to fame by being the first gay venue to reach the final of the Evening News Pub of the Year contest. To reach the last 12 out of 440 entrants is a feat on its own. Well done folks. On the food side bar suppers are served daily. Cabaret is also a regular feature. I was asked the other day by a friend of mine if manager Stevie was really gay, well, I can assure you buddy, he really is. I knew him years ago (no no, not in the biblical sense). The food side of the scene, apart from the pubs, is served by two lesbian and gay cafes. The Blue Moon in Broughton Street has fast become one of the country's leading lesbigay eateries, offering a good range in food, beer, teas and coffees in a very relaxed atmosphere. Well worth a visit. Down the street at the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Centre we find The Edge Cafe. For many years, there has been a cafe in the centre (for a while run as the Blue Moon). Although not as busy as the current Blue Moon, the Edge has recently been tarted up and has changed hands although Martin Walker, the previous owner, is very much still in evidence. It is now hoped to have the cafe open on a more regular basis. In the same building, you can buy that little extra for the lover, whether it be a card, a record, a magazine or a bit of leather for the fun times, by calling into the Drondale shop on the same level as the Edge. Tell Terry we sent you, and I am sure he will take care of all your needs. As far as accommodation goes, I have to admit that Mansfield House, at 57 Dublin Street will take some beating for sheer style. This former Georgian Home offers residents a quality of accommodation that many of the larger establishments could do well to copy. For sheer luxury at reasonable prices you need look no further. It is always best to book in advance. Not far from Mansfield House, you will find West and Wilde bookshop. With a very large lesbian and gay stock of books and magazines, W&W is always well worth a visit whether you intend to buy or just browse for an idea for the loved one's birthday. Just before we close this look at Edinburgh a mention for what promises to be Scotlands largest ever gay one nighter is coming to the capital city. At the Cavendish, on Bank Holiday Sunday, 30th April, The Media Company in association with Labatts Ice Beer present "Love and Passion". Scotland's biggest and most outrageous night of pleasure, passion and glamour. An expected crowd of 2,000 will be entertained by DJs from Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Manchester, and Sheffield. It is hoped to stage regular monthly events in the near future. Doors will be open from 9pm until 4am. Watch the press for details. ************************** MYSTIC PEG Welcome to Mystic Peg, and to her slightly off-beat look at what is in store for this month's birthday people - Arians. March 21st - April 20th Aries the first sign of the zodiac, the BIG No.1. If you want to get a head (or even some head) get an Arian. The Arian is full of energy, he has boundless enthusiasm for both love (mostly for himself) and sex. He knows that he is the best and he is arrogant enough to assume that everybody else knows it too. Sharing does not come easily to the Arian, he always has to come first (in every way). The best of the drama queens, he thrives on creating scenes, he must be the centre of attention at all times. He is jealous, possessive, but totally inconsistant, expecting extreme devotion from his inferiors, there is no-one superior to Arian. He was born to be the boss (Hitler was an Arian). Relationships with Arians will fluctuate between heaven and hell, when he is on the chase or is faced with the challenge of having to win you over he is everything that you have always wanted in a man, but beware when the first flush of excitement wear off he is your worst nightmare. Never expect an Arian to be faithful he is the natural whore of the zodiac, a real tart. An Arian is never wrong and it is dangerous to try to prove otherwise, he will strike back without mercy. He never makes mistakes, always assuming that others are to blame. Aries is the brightest, fastest burning of the fire signs, never failing to rise to the challenge with a passionate enthusiasm that quickly turns to boredom then onto the next thrill. Long term commitment for an Arian means staying the night. No.1 in every aspect, the Arian is often the fashion victim, if it's new and expensive he will buy it. A salesman's dream, the Arian man only has to be told that he is the first to buy it. The Arian man's home will be full of designer furniture and useless gadgets. You will never recognise his aftershave, it's always the newest and the best (most expensive). Never think of yourself as an Arian's partner, you are just his latest accessory, discarded as easily as his latest gadget. ARIES AS PARTNERS WITH OTHER SIGNS With Other Fire Signs Aries with Aries - Heavenly battle of the Gods. Aries with Leo - White hot Aries and red hot Leo, leaves only ashes. Aries with Sagittarius - The Aries can out bitch the Sagittarian super bitch. With Earth Signs Aries with Capricorn - Aries is the only sign that can put the icy Capricorn in heat. Aries with Taurus - The Aries heat dries up the earth of the Taurus, dried up and clapped out. Aries with Virgo - Please! The whore and the virgin! With Water Signs Aires with Pisces - Piscean tears, the Arian fears. Aries with Cancer - The Aries would need chemotherapy. Aries with Scorpio - Sex is so good between this pair that the Pope has banned it. With Air Signs Aries with Gemini - Double Deceit. Aries with Libra - Stalemate, both are in love with themselves. Aries with Aquarius - The war of the Poses. ************************ SNIPITS Following on from the successful 1994 Highland Fling in Edinburgh's Meadows, Saturday the 19th of August has been set aside for the 95 version at the same venue. The 1995 version is in aid of Fringe Benifits - a link-up between Waverly Care, SAM, and Crusaid. This outrageous awareness day runs from 12-8pm. Event Co-ordinator Leo Devlin tells PULSE that "this should be the largest gathering of gay people so far in Scotland. We aim to provide a platform to bring together people from all communities for a day of celebrations and awareness". A possible future Prime Minister of Sweden, recently came out as gay on a Swedish TV programme. MP Andreas Carlgren is the 2nd vice-chairman of Sweden's Center Party. Carlgren is the country's the first top level politician to do so. A surgeon infected with the AIDS virus has returned to work at Glasgow's Royal infirmary. After learning of his infection, Professor George Browning immeadiately told his bosses and was sent on a holiday. Although he is being allowed to return to his post, professor Browning is not being allowed to operate. The health board contacted over 700 of his patients. None so far has the AIDS virus. David Lauwers, 35, has been jailed for life after pleading guilty to killing 11 men and badly injuring 15 at a recent London porn cinema fire. The jury heard that the deaf tailors cutter set fire to the club after a fight with the clubs bouncers. Lauwers still faces further charges. One of the main players in the introduction of the outrageous anti-gay Clause 28, Dame Jill Knight is to retire from Parliament after the next election. The 67 year old co- sponsored the original 1988 Local Government Act which prohibits the promotion of homosexuality by local governments. Leading gay publishers Prowler Press were taken aback when only three weeks after they were raided, two officers from Hornsey police station returned their goods claiming that "spring was in the air". Neil Cavalier-Smith, managing director of Prowler said: "We have always been a company that has pushed back the bounderies of censorship in this country and are very pleased that we are not to be prosecuted". ******************* RE-VIEW NATURAL BORN KILLERS (Oliver Stone) Film posters for tacky 1950's film used to proclaim "THE FILM THEY TRIED TO BAN" and "THE MOST SHOCKING FILM EVER" and the films were always awful and very disappointing. NATURAL BORN KILLERS has all this hype and all of the disappointment. It tells the story of two white trash lowlifes Mickey (Woody Harrelson) and Mallory (Juliette Lewis) who get their kicks by killing anyone they meet, and who has the misfortune of spending anytime with them? This is designed to be Oliver Stone's comment on the media and our fascination with crime and serial killers. It fails in a major way - it is all hype. The film itself mixes styles. It uses black and white, animation and parody to make what l can only describe as mess. The original screenplay was written by Quentin Tarantino. It was sold to Oliver Stone who rewrote it, possibly the first of a series mistakes. The one thing about Tarantino is that he can write speech - Oliver Stone cannot. All the roles are played oddly to say the least. Having set up the idea there are two serial killers on a magical mystery tour, in which they kill lots of people, get caught and are sent to jail, we find that the media has made them icons on the front cover of magazines and featuring in documentaries. I would normally suggest that you wait and watch this one on video but like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction it will probably never get released, so watch it but expect nothing. LEON (LUC BESSON) This is a film made by one of my favourite directors who made the original Nikitta - unfortunately most people would think of the Hollywood remake with young Fonda. This film is really stylish although maybe the story leaves a little to be desired but it makes up for it it style. BARCELONA (WHIT STILLMAN) This is somewhat of a part two to a film called Metropolitan, full of the joys of the New York debutante season, but this film is set in Barcelona at the end of the cold war. There are two young Americans who are in search of fulfilment - they have wit and irony (the hallmarks of a Stillman film).Ted is a serious minded sales executive who is in search of love. His life is turned upsidedown by the arrival of his childhood friend, Fred, who is a brash Naval officer. The film is set against the background of anti-Americanism in Barcelona - the local terrorist group have been bombing American targets. There are lots of very comic scenes about childhood, being American, politics, and jazz - they are not belly laughs but really funny. This is a nice light comedy film well worth watching. CHICAGO A little bit of live entertainment to close this month with. The Kings Theatre Glasgow is the setting for a very lively version of Chicago by the Pantheon Club. Including the never to be missed Cell Block Tango, Mister Cellophane and Class all directed by local boy Iain Vince-Gatt, the artistic director is Stewart Hawthorn. The setting is Chicago, the theme is murder, the blood is cold and the jazz is red hot. Be prepared for a lively night and you will not be disappointed. ********************* BACKTALK Outright Rip-Off What a load of gullible chumps the members of OUTRIGHT Scotland are. At their AGM, they voted to hand over a valuable business to one of their members for a fraction of its real value. Dominic D'Angelo, editor of Gay Scotland for the last two years, is to get a five year licence to publish and profit from the magazine in exchange for promises (not backed by any security) to pay off the magazine's existing debts of around ukp16,000. Most of these debts are believed to be owed to D'Angelo! The motion was brought forward by the Directors of Calosa Publishing (John Wilkes, Ian Dunn and Andrew Neilson) and was the clear culmination of a long standing plan initiated by the great Socialist Dunn to privatise one of the group's major assets. Last year, the constitution of the group was changed so that such a decision no longer requires a two thirds majority. An amendment, proposed by founder member of OUTRIGHT Scotland Jim Halcrow, would have given the group time to think and to seek other possible offers for the title, but this was rejected out of hand although it was clear that no effort had been made to see if a better deal could be obtained. Although neither Pulse (or our sister paper ScotsGay) would have been interested in bidding, we can reveal that we are aware of a publisher who would have been prepared to pay considerably more than D'Angelo. Pulse showed the skimpy figures for the last financial year put before the meeting to an accountant with considerable experience of the publishing business. She told us, 'On the basis of these figures, any competent business person should be able to make considerable savings, build the business up and should net a profit of at least ukp50,000 over the five year period.' This figure is slightly lower than D'Angelo's own estimate of what Gay Scotland can produce,. When he took over as editor two years ago, he expected to take over ukp1,000 per month out of the enterprise for working on a part time basis. Unfortunately for him, the fraud perpetrated by Calosa's previous Company Secretary hit the cash flow and turned what was otherwise a profitable business into one with a large cumulative loss. Now that things are beginning to turn around, D'Angelo is making sure that he has got his nose firmly in the trough - and who can blame him? It's the members of OUTRIGHT Scotland who have handed him the business on a plate. OUTRIGHT also rejected amendments which would have prevented D'Angelo from selling on the right to publish the magazine. There is now nothing to stop him selling his own company (and with it the right to publish Gay Scotland for five years) to anybody else - be it The Pink Paper or Rupert Murdoch). OUTRIGHT too rejected charging a royalty of 12.5% of the cover price of every magazine sold over and above the first 2,000 of each issue. D'Angelo ignored a request at the meeting to state just how many copies of GS were currently being sold although a recent advertising rates card claims a circulation of over 3,000. This does not square with informed opinion in the magazine trade which puts GS's circulation at around 1,500 copies per month. Finally, in a bizarre decision, OUTRIGHT threw out an amendment which would have given them the right to have up to a page of free advertising in each issue. OUTRIGHT will now be expected to pay for anything over a quarter page in what was its own magazine. Pulse and ScotsGay have consistently given free advertising space to OUTRIGHT although D'Angelo has insisted on charging for any ads in GS. One of the members present, Brian Dempsey, asked the meeting: 'Don't you think this is a stitch up?'. ScotsGay editor, former Gay Scotland editor and current OUTRIGHT Scotland Executive Member John Hein told the meeting, 'This is a community asset which we are giving away. This is all wrong.' Then, by 17 votes to 5, (less than 20% of OUTRIGHT's membership were present), the meeting agreed to sell Calosa Publishing Ltd (publishers of Gay Scotland) to Personal Assistance Ltd (D'Angelo's company) in exchange for the latter company promising to pay off the first company's debts at some unspecified time. By a similar majority, they had earlier rejected an amendment which would have forced D'Angelo to personally guarantee these debts in the case that his own company went bust. The dozen or so small investors in Calosa Limited (the original publishing company which had to cease trading after Nigel Cook forged audit reports on a series of annual returns) were promised by OUTRIGHT several years ago that their shareholding would be transfered to Calosa Publishing Ltd. This was never done. Now it never will be. They don't even get a free subscription. Gay Scotland is no longer a community magazine although, as a small circulation arts publication, it may have a place in the open market. Its content is irrelevant to the majority of lesbians gays and bisexuals in Scotland and its claim to be their 'authoritative voice' is a hollow one. It has alienated the bulk of its original readers and has failed to attract broadsheet readers in the number which D'Angelo had counted on. After the meeting, one of the members who had in fact voted to hand the magazine over to D'Angelo said 'What's all the fuss about anyway? His magazine is a load of crap.' And that, out of loyalty to OUTRIGHT, is something we would never have printed before. Gordon Gosnell ************ HEALTH MATTERS Love Drugs Throughout history, humans have used many drugs and even foods to enhance sexual experiences. We've all heard of the aphrodisiac effect of oysters and aniseed, cocaine, alcohol and 'poppers' but do they really work? According to the dictionary definition of an aphrodisiac, if it provokes sexual desire, then yes! Researchers, however, tend to use a narrow definition that denotes physiologically activated sexual arousal and few substances fall into this category. Alcohol is perhaps the most common substance associated with sexual arousal. What better way to end a social evening with friends than to fall into bed with the man of your dreams and have a night of uninhibited sexual passion! Alcohol works to disinhibit sexual response at small doses and to depress it at high ones. As Shakespeare writes in Macbeth (ActII, Scene 3) "It provokes and unprovokes: it provokes the desire but it takes away the performance". The message is clearly to drink what you know to be your "safe level" - usually 3-4 pints or equivalent in an evening. Too much and you may miss out on an otherwise far more intoxicating experience. Many other drugs including nitrates or 'poppers' are also very popular among gay men. They are powerful vascodilators which produce a rush or high that lasts for no more than a few minutes. Users report prolonged orgasm and a delay in coming. However, these drugs can cause unwanted side effects including headaches, low blood pressure, rapid pulse and other cardiac problems. Whatever your preference if you are using any drugs to enhance sexual performance make sure you know what you're taking and the potential side effects. Health Advisers and GUM physicians are always more than happy to discuss any concerns you may have, so if you do need a check-up or just more information contact your nearest clinic. ********** CONTACTS CONTACTS Men EDINBURGH AREA Mature gent, non scene, seeks companion , non-scene, any age.
