Another year has flown - a year in which the very foundations of the moral minority's mission to preserve all that is best about Britain have been undermined. Unlike All Bran (where the box is the most tasty and nutritious part of the product), our law makers have chosen to weaken the moral fibre of our nation's young men by allowing them to have their bits played with by other males before they're old enough to drive an HGV. Not what I call a Healthy Choice. What is the world coming to? Before we know it, they'll be having lesbian unions blessed in church! Seriously though, folks, it hasn't been a bad year on the lesbigay front - there's been the disappointment over getting stuck with Inequality at 18, but let's just hope that that's a minor hiccough. In Scotland at least, the Lord Advocate has made clear that 16 is now the effective age of consent for gay men irrespective of what the law may say. So, Carry on Shagging, guys! And maybe Gretna Green can look forward to increased gay business in the future. Another setback for the movement has been ILGA's expulsion by the United Nations. It appears that booting out the paedophiles wasn't good enough - perhaps they'll just have to boot out the homosexuals too. Now ILGA will have to re-think its rationale - and that won't necessarily be a bad thing. Nevertheless, back home, the feelgood factor has never felt gooder. The UK scene continues to expand. Our phonelines get busier. And more people come out to themselves, their friends and their families. What of the year ahead? One dark cloud on the horizon comes from the USA - there's a bill going through which will make it a criminal offence for an American citizen to have sex with anybody aged under 18 anywhere in the world. But at least it's equality - it looks as if heterosexuals who have married quite legally here in the UK at 16 will be affected too! As I write, there are reminders emerging from India that any homosexual activities can still get you up to ten years in jail. Then, what do you expect from countries that have had the benefit of British colonisation? It's not all doom and gloom, though. There's always Pride Scotland to look forward to - not to mention Pride in whatever London park is eventually chosen. And there's hope too on the HIV/AIDS front with new research throwing up new insights into the disease which has ravaged our community. But, as usual, the most cheerful and encouraging things are likely to come from within our own community as we rise to meet the new challenges that the year will bring. A Happy New Year to you all! John Hein ------------------------------------------------------------------ SCENE NEWS ========== EDINBURGH The main news from the Athens of the North is the changing hands of French Connections, now to be called Maggie Rayes. New owner Raymond Inverarity, formerly of Bodytech Sauna, tells PULSE that the old place will be given a tart up after the New Year, with the theme being changed to that of an impromptu cabaret bar, with some sort of entertainment most evenings. The forthcoming Burns Night Party should be one to remember. Och Aye! Round at Route 66, manager Stevie tells us the the city's latest addition to the scene is going from strength to strength, and the coming weeks will see the introduction of quiz nights, party nights and the appearance of 'Star Acts'. Any more gay businesses in this part of town and the council might have to rename the place. What about Queenstown? Answers on a postcard to the local council offices. BLACKPOOL Well, did Santa fill your stockings with what you wanted? All I found in my stockings was another varicose vein and 2lbs of cellulite! But that's another story. The celebrations kicked off with yet another spectacular unveiling of the Christmas decorations at the Flamingo. Betty Legs Diamond stole the evening (as only she can) by flying down to the stage on a swing from the 'Heavens'. If that had been me with my excess baggage I would have crashed through the wall at the other side and landed on the 12-15 to Preston! From then on it was non-stop party time. 1995 also sees the beginning of a major refurbishment to the Flamingo - but don't worry the club will remain open throughout. Phase one involves the top two floors closing down for a short while, but not the ground floor, and in true Basil Newby style this refurbishment is bound to be well worth seeing, if the quality of the redecoration of Funny Girls restaurant is anything to go by. Stay tuned for further news. So what else is happening in 1995? Linda, the manageress of Lucy's Bar has told me that membership is only ukp5-00 for the year and this entitles you to free admission throughout the year (except for Christmas and a handful of bank holidays) and reduced drink prices on promotional nights. Without membership, a door charge of ukp1-00 will be made on Friday and Saturday nights only. Throughout 1994 Blackpool has continued to provide the best in entertainment and accommodation, this is guaranteed to continue and improve during 1995. So go on treat yourself and get to Blackpool. If you don't try it you won't know what you have missed! All the best for 1995. Luv Tony. LIVERPOOL Liverpool's gay scene continues to expand with the opening on December 2nd of a new nightclub THE ESCAPE. Owned by Bass Breweries, the Escape is jointly managed by Ian Harman and Joseph Roche. The club is housed on 2 levels, and is lavishly decorated throughout. It has a balcony, 2 bars and 2 dance floors, and there is capacity for 400 people. Ian says that he purposely chose the name of the club in order to offer the Liverpool gay community a viable alternative and to match what's already on offer in Manchester. A cafe bar operates on the premises from 12 noon to 6pm and Ian says that this idea is catching on well. With a different DJ every night and cabaret 3 times a week, every taste is catered for. The friendly staff and easy-going atmosphere all add to the fun. The general consensus is to give a big thumbs up to The Escape and hope it is here to stay. After a long period in the doldrums, Liverpool scene has returned to its former glory and it's nice to see so many people from the rest of the Northwest being attracted back to the city. GLASGOW It's Glasgow, it's the end of January (Monday the 30th), it's the Renfrew Ferry, it has to be the GAY BALL. Following on last year's smash hit by the Glasgow Bars AIDS Welfare Fund Committee, the tickets are once again selling in droves. Those who have yet to purchase their ticket, should get their skates on and contact either Colin at Austins or Vicky at the Waterloo. Recently Glasgow has seen a flourish in the live entertainment stakes in the gay bars. Well there is more to come. Discussions are being held behind closed doors with a view to putting Glasgow on the map with regards to quality live entertainment. We at PULSE are at the moment having to keep our mouths well and truly shut (not like us) but we can assure you you will hear the news hear first. Just straight off the fax, is the news that Bennets have lined up for the end of the month, the one and only Sean McGuire. Yahoo!! For those of you who have yet to sort out what you are going to be wearing to the ball, have I got news for you. The Committee secretary Bill (or Highland Mary to those old enough to remember), has organised a special rate for the full kilt outfit hire at Dunvegan Kilts in the Saltmarket. The cost, believe it or not, only ukp20. Just tell the manager you are going to the ball and leave the rest to him. Just before we put in the full stop in Glasgow, I can exclusively reveal what Gay Scotland Editor Dominic d'Angelo has lined up to wear on the big night. However, I won't tell. Well it might have something to do with a ukp50 donation given by the bold editor at the Waterloo's outrageous hogmanay party. A hell of a 'dressy' dresser is Dominic. Talking of outrageous, did you see the tartan Colin at Austins was nearly wearing. Fran and Anna eat your heart out. KETTERING For PULSE'S first trip into the Midlands, we are going to have a look at Kettering's first gay venue. Club Vibration (Scandals) is to be found right in the town's High Street, and what a luxurious venue it is, the carpeting and furnishings being of the highest quality. Although the club is only open on a Sundays (8-till late) at the moment, June and John (di management - been watching to much telly recently) tell us that there are plans ahead to open on a week day night if the attendance trend continues. Those dancing queens among you will appreciate the booking of top flight DJ 'Amadeus', who will be enticing you all onto the spacious hexagonal dance area to boogie the night away. (Wheeee-Ha). Monthly live entertainment is also being planned, watch the club for details. With a moderate ukp3 entry and very competitive bar prices, it looks as though Kettering has at last found itself in the gay and lesbian market. See you all soon, Dale. --------------------------------------------------------------- RE-VIEW ======= I love Trouble (Charles Shyer) 1994 I am a real Nick Nolte fan - l loved him in 48 Hours and Another 48 Hours - and most of my hetrosexual friends lust after Julia Roberts. The story is based around the 1930s character The Thin Man. An aging drunk reporter meets cub reporter and they become rivals for the big story. Eventully they start to become friends and possibly lovers. The story they are chasing is one of a drug company which is marketing a drug that does not work. The film is meant to be a romantic comedy but it fails to have the charm of the original. The Shadow (Russell Mulcahy) 1994 This is based around a 1930 comic strip and has amazing special effects but little story. It stars Alex Baldwin as superhero The Shadow 'Who knows what evil lurks in the minds of men'. Unfortunately it is not a camp as the other comic book turned movies like Batman or the Mask - it lacks style. The kind of movie you would take your younger brother to see!! Airheads (Micheal Lehmann) 1994 This is a really funny story of L.A. rockers The Lone Rangers who have failed to get their new demo tape played on the radio, so in true Wayne's World style they hatch a plot. They break into a radio station and kidnap the D.J. (Joe Mantega) and force him to play the tape but due to a series of funny mishaps end up in a seige situation with the radio station staff held hostage. This is the kind of movie which would be ideal on video. And that brings me neatly to the videos I've been looking at: KAMA SUTRA OF GAY SEX This, one of the latest releases from Prowler Press, is designed to resemble a sort of educational video using the history of the KAMA SUTRA as a basis. Dr Ray Lightbrown introduces the video with a short history and then gives advice on safer sex. It has six models doing the gay version of the famous 64 positions and a rather bizzare voiceover reading extracts from the KAMA SUTRA. It is like a sex guide for beginners - especially virgins! Well shot with music by Gura Josh and somewhat trippy graphics. (60 minutes) EURO BOY 7 BJORN & BRAD'S COVERBOYS This is the latest in Prowler's growing series of EUROBOY videos. It has a short introduction of the bodies which we are about to view with music and little dialogue. As the advert says: it has 3 solos and 2 duos! It features two skinheads (who are apparently straight - yes, that old cliche) meeting on Hampstead Heath and then going back to their place and having wild fun! It is rather badly shot - a bit like a home video - but that is part of its charm. The other part of the video consists of those boys (who are American by the way) who have appeared in the magazine EUROBOY during photoshoots. The bodies look good, dicks are not totally hard, but we all have imagination, eh!! One hitch is that they are watching heterosexual porn to keep themselves stimulated. One of the models is your typical 'dumb-blond' unable to understand the basic instruction from the photographer. With all that to one side, dare l say that it is well worth the ukp14.00 asking price for a decent wank - it passed the stiffy test especially Dylan. (66 MINUTES) --------------------------------------------------------------- SNIPPITS ======== The plans for Glasgow's first Sauna and Health Club, exclusively for gay and bi-sexual men, have been shelved. Glasgow District Council (the proposed landlords) refused a lease after finding out the nature of the business to be opperated from the property. The company have informed their solicitor of the situation, and are at present looking at other premises in the city centre. Tory Party chairman Jeremy Hanley has reiterated the ban on lesbian and gay organisations taking stands at Tory Party conference. In a letter to a Tory councillor, Hanley said that campaigning groups subject to a free vote in the House of Commons were not allowed to have a stall at conference. Gay groups such as the Campaign for Homosexual Equality hope to meet Hanley soon to discuss the ban. The Broadcasting Standards Council (BSC) has upheld a complaint about a TV programme looking at gay parenting which was broadcast before the 9pm watershed. The BSC agreed that the Scottish Television show 'Kirsty', which was broadcast at 5pm, was broadcast when children might have been watching without supervision. Lesbian and gay men who face persecution in their home countries could seek asylum in the UK following a surprise decision by an independent appeal tribunal. The ruling, announced recently, concerns an appeal from a former Rumanian soldier - a Mr Vraciu - who argued that he would be persecuted for being gay if he were to be sent back to Rumania. The five campaigners who last month mounted a 12 hour protest on the roof of the Houses of Parliament against the Criminal Justice Act, will not face charges. Meanwhile, about 500 people recently held a mass tresspass against the act at the Prime Minister's country residence, Chequers. The act enshrines a number of measures that gay activists have warned will penalise gay men. The latest AIDS figures issued by the Government's Public Health Laboratory Service show that there were 152 new reported cases of AIDS up to June 94, bringing the UK total to 9,865 cases. The HIV figure stands at 22,581, with two thirds of those infected being gay and bisexual men. --------------------------------------------------------------------- FOCUS 1994 ========== Is it really a year since we had 'Tea and Biscuits' with HRH La Belle Hutton? When it was announced that she was to write for PULSE, a lot of Glasgow's older ladies went into hiding. Well you know how liberal she can be with her tongue when she starts. For those of you who read the article, fried liver will never quite be the same again. The start of 94 also saw the coming out of YORK as a gay venue. The emergence of the White Horse under Paul and Dave's guidance certainly brightened up a rather dreary scene within the old city walls. The end of January saw the coming of age of the Glasgow Bars AIDS Welfare Fund, with their Grand Ball being an outrageous success, and ukp2,500 being added to the fund's coffers. The good work continues (see the Glasgow Scene News). What would a good review of the poofy year be without a dig at the Government. Edwina Currie rose to her feet on the 21st of February in the Houses of Parliament and begged to move, (must have been the beans, curried of course) thus starting the debate on the age of consent, only to be so narrowly lost at the count. A very emotive time for all who were there. We have 18, a cop out. Only equality will suffice, and surely it's not so far away. March saw the publication of the STUART GAIR story, a story of a young man in jail convicted of a murder in a well known cruising area in Glasgow's city centre. Despite PULSE highlighting his story, all its flaws and naming people who could help right this miscarriage of justice, Mr Gair is still in jail. PULSE and its friends will continue to press for his release. For those who have failed to come forward, we ask that they search their concience and tell the truth. This could so easily be you or your loved one. May saw the madness called censorship rear its ugly head once again. DAVID (Granny) ALTON, the Liverpool MP, was calling for stricter video censorship, all very moralistic, He even got married, to a woman! - Leaving his fellow Liberal Democrats to wet themselves in paroxisms of disbelief. April also saw the death of JOHN CURRY, one of the worlds leading Ice Dance performers. John led the way in transforming Ice Dance as we know it today. John, the campest thing on two skates, will be sorely missed. June saw yet another intrusion of our civil liberties. No longer are we able to dial all those nice premium rate telephone people as and when we want to, to have some fun. Now we have to have a special number to do so. Some would say that these lines are obscene, have you seen the cost of the ordinary phone calls? Now that's what I call obscene. It wasn't all doom and gloom in June, BOY GEORGE, BANANARAMA, and LILLY SAVAGE and about 200,000 screaming Lesbians and Gay men let the world know that THEY WERE HERE, THEY WERE QUEER, AND THEY WEREN'T OUT FOR THE SHOPPING. Pride as a festival had arrived. Roll on the summer. In Manchester, magistrates allowed the EQUINOX club to keep its drinks licence after the police had accused the owners of obscenity following a raid on the club, where an 18 Cert Jean Genet film was being shown. Now that's what I call a good use of police manpower (not). Manchester has always led the way as far as the north of the country goes, and it is no surprise to see it emerging as the largest gay village (outside London) in the country. Scottish AIDS Monitor held their first Highland Fling in the Athens of the North (Jessieburgh), it will be fun to see how it is accepted in Glasgow, as a promised site in 1995. (I bet St Vs) will be quiet that day. Unless that's where they are going to hold the 'Toss the Willie Contest'. All in the safest possible taste of course. October saw out LIVERPOOL Local Councillor STEVE RADFORD bare his soul to you all. From the response we had over that article, it would appear that the LIVERPOOL Council has the largest closet in the country. The Autumn also saw the launch of the Steve Retson Project, the birth of Pride Scotland and the addition to the PULSE team of London broadcaster BRAITHWAITE. Now who said I've forgotten about BLACKPOOL, the town with the biggest hard-on as well as one of the biggest hearts in the country, when it comes to raising money for charities. The one and only GRACE JONES hit town in a way only she can. If half of the stories about the party back at the TRADES are true, she must have been a very busy girl, and that was only our TONY's version cleaned up for reprinting. Over in LIVERPOOL, TIME OUT has emerged as one of the up and coming pubs in the area, and who said that things never change in Scouse land. With the opening of a new club, (exclusively revealed in PULSE) by Bass, their first outside of London, do I feel a new gay village in the making? Back up in Sunny Scotland, Edinburgh's gay scene has really taken off again with two gay cafes, three pubs, it would appear that the old city is once again to the fore. Not to be outdone, Glasgow's first Lesbian and Gay Cafe, EAT OUT has opened up to rave reviews alongside another new pub, GHQ. PULSE has itself been expanding over the last year, and before you say it, I haven't forgotten about Leeds and Bradford, it's just that I have yet to get the camera into that area, but fear ye not, time is approaching. The wee fat thing with the black box will soon be amongst you all. So who is this Beadle character, eh? Well thats about it for another year, new places have come, some have gone, some old queens like me just keep rolling on. However please remember some of our friends and loved ones never made it to the New Year, keep their memory alive by living life to the full and playing safely. See you all soon. --------------------------------------------------------------- HEALTH MATTERS ============== The Doctor's mail bag has been a bit heavy this month, with all sorts of questions. Below are a few of the more common and most repeated ones. We are sorry the Doc cannot answer all your letters in person. However I am sure you can find the answers at your local GUM clinic. Q) How can I tell if I have genital herpes? A) In most people symptoms are mild or non existent. If symptoms do occur, they may include itching, burning, tingling of the skin, followed by redness and small blisters which break open to form little sores. The first outbreak can last two or three weeks and often feels like flu, with muscle aches, headaches, swollen glands and a burning sensation on passing urine. Herpes can occur in your back passage. This can cause severe discomfort, diarrhoea and anal discharge. If you suspect you have genital herpes, then contact your Department of Genitourinary Medicine and Sexual Health for an appointment. Q) I'm living in the Glasgow area, and thinking of having an HIV Test, where can I go? A) HIV counselling and testing is free and confidential at the following centres: - Steve Retson Project (041-304 4753/4). Any Department of Genito-urinary Medicine & Sexual Health... - Glasgow Royal Infirmary (041-304 4753/4) - Southern General Hospital (041-201 1690/1) - The Counselling Clinic, Ruchill Hospital - (041-946 5247 or 041-946 7120, ext 1424). The above centres have counsellors who will help you make an informed decision regarding having a test. Telephone first for an appointment. Q) I think I might have crabs, how do I treat them? A) Crabs are very easily treated with a lotion which you can get from your Genitourinary Medicine and Sexual Health clinic. The lotion should be applied to all the coarse hair bearing areas below the neck. It is left on for a few hours then washed off. There is no need to shave the affected area. Wash all clothing and bed linen which has been in contact with the area. If you're in a regular partnership your partner needs treatment too. Q) Recently a friend told me that he had Hepatitis A. What is Hepatitis A? A) Hepatitis A is a virus which is usually transmitted through swallowing contaminated food or water. Rimming is also an important route of transmission. Recently reports of Hepatitis A in gay men have been increasing. If you are concerned about Hepatitis A, then come along to your local health clinic where you can be tested and, if necessary, vaccinated. ------------------------------------------------------------------- THE PULSE 1994 AWARDS ===================== It's that time again when we have a look at some of the things that some of you have been up to, and in our usual tongue in cheek way we hereby offer up our awards for the year gone by. So to the gongs. The Crossover Award: Blackpool's Basil Newby for opening Funny Girls: the campest straight bar in the country. The Peter Mandelson Award: Peter Thatchell for the most individual effort in trying to make the Labour Party electable. The Best New Gay Village: Jointly to Edinburgh and Liverpool. The On-Line Award: Nigel at uk-motss for data beyond the call of duty. The Best Real Ale Pub Award: Jointly to the Star Tavern Edinburgh and Time Out in Liverpool. The Don't Do As I Do, Do As I Say Award: The Members of Parliament who didn't vote for 16. The Team Award: The Glasgow Bars Aids Welfare Fund Committe for all their hard work in fundraising for Ruchill hospital. With a special mention to all those wonderful customers who have given so generously as ever. The Police Liaison Award: Ian Campbell Dunn (He seems to do little else these days) The Best DRESSED Editor Award: Dominic d' Angelo of Gay Scotland, for the purchase of a natty little number off Martin's shoulders on Hogmanay. The Worst Dressed Editor Award John Hein of Scotsgay (no explanation required) -------------------------------------------------------------------- LESBIAN BLESSING ================ Despite the inclement weather and the unwanted attention of staff from the Daily Record newspaper (who's write up the following Monday was inaccurate to say the least), everything was set for a bit of history in the making. Nothing was going to spoil the day. In what was only Scotland's second same sex blessing (not a wedding as some have suggested), performed in an actual church, (Glasgow's Unitarian Church) the Rev Joy Croft lead the service in front of 80 friends and family. JUNE and PAT, had decided to confirm their love for each other, and their commitment to their relationship before God, family and friends. In a very moving ceremony, both Pat and June seemed radiant as they were lead through the blessing by the Rev Joy Croft who seemed so happy to be performing the ceremony for them. Once the business end of the day was over, it was back to local bar, GHQ and to a very pleasant buffet supplied by Eat Out, Glasgow's new lesbian and Gay cafe. Meanwhile, outside in the rain, the vultures from the straight press were determined to get their photo of the happy couple. No Joy (excuse the pun Rev). In fact it was quite hilarious when the snappers were snapped by our man with the camera. More of them later. Unlike other people, June and Pat were not seeking the attention of the straight press on their big day. Just a very happy couple wishing to let those close to them know of their love for each other. --------------------------------------------------------------------- BACKTALK ======== ONE LITTLE PIGGY WENT TO MARKET 'Fifteen quid for a white T-shirt with a bit of black writing?', I heard one of your Pulse staff exclaim at the recent Gay Lifestyles Exhibition in London. 'I haven't done 20 years of slaving for gay liberation for the privilege of being ripped off by some smart ass who thinks he can con me just because he fucks men too!' And he has a point (expressed somewhat coarsely). Many people who were brought up before the rise of the commercial gay scene are irked at what they see as a capitalist hijack of things gay. They were used to a more co-operative spirit - gay centres which were owned by the community and run for the benefit of all. Or one nighters which were run to raise money for some particular community project. The trouble was that many of these ventures just weren't run very well. You only have to look at the millions of pounds squandered on the London Lesbian and Gay Centre. Or the countless thousands of pounds misappropriated by people supposedly working away for the benefit of the community. But, if you look at the wages being paid by these enterprises, it's not difficult to understand why. If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys - and sticky fingered little monkeys at that. It's the enterprises that are in private ownership that are still around to serve the community - West and Wilde (despite your carping), the businesses in the Edinburgh Lesbian and Gay Centre, the pubs and clubs. Need I say more? You at Pulse (and now ScotsGay) are part of that new realism. As such, it little becomes you to criticise the capitalist culture. True, there are gay run businesses which are there just to rip you off - but they are few and far between. Most business people are just there to earn an honest living. After all, if you don't continue buying from them, they won't stay in business for long. ukp15 too much for a T-shirt? Maybe if you buy your clothes in the markets but hardly if you buy good quality from Marks and Spencer. Just look at our pubs and clubs. Thank God, we've come a long way from the furtive functions held in scruffy church halls in the 60's. Today, our commercial social facilities rank with anything that straight society can offer. I'm not knocking the voluntary sector - where it excells is in providing counselling services and help for people in need. That's not the function of businesses - although many businesses do make charitable donations from their profits. Horses for courses - after 15 years of Conservatism, things have changed. You'd better all get used to it!
