There were pooves, dykes, bicycles, hetties and a fair selection of companion animals along with many of their friends of indeterminate gender, sexuality and species. The numbers who turned out vary according to the source, but it is clear that one hell of a lot of people turned out for our annual festival. Claiming the lowest figures are, as usual, the Metropolitan Police. But we shouldn't be surprised - their New York colleagues pulled the same trick at Stonewall 25 - underestimating the participants by some 75%. Why, I wonder, do they do this? It's not just homophobia - I've seen it happen at student demonstrations and Trades Union marches. Capital Gay's Michael Mason used to be seen regularly at Pride with a little pocket clicker - and his figure, which was about as accurate as it was possible to get without barcoding everybody and making them walk past a scanner, was always much greater than the police estimate for the march. One of the main complaints I heard this year was that it took some two and a half hours for everybody to get out of Hyde Park. As the front of the march consisted of a contingent of people in wheelchairs, a lot of folk were blaming them. But, in fact, it had nothing to do with the wheelchairs - the delay was totally due to police incompetence. It was also the fault of the police that the parade lacked the colourful floats which have brightened things up in previous years. Those few which did bother to turn up were, by police edict, confined to the rear of the parade. Nevertheless, the Bobbies seemed to be on their best behaviour both on the march and at Brockwell Park where quite a few even seemed to be enjoying themselves. And at least we got a decent route this year instead of being herded around the more obscure back streets of the City. One idea for next year which is being floated is that Pride should spread over two days. And a very good idea it is too! The Festival could be on the Saturday with the March/Parade/Cavalcade (call it what you will) on the Sunday. Or vice versa. So, there'd be no excuse for not going to both - this year, a lot of queens complained that going on the march would mean that they'd miss some of the entertainment in the Park. Of course, there are still those who mourn for the smaller marches of the 70s and 80s with their ever present undercurrent of antagonism to and from the police - although probably more miss the delights of the Swimming Pool at the University of London Union where the Pride March used to finish. Well, this year, the open air Brockwell Lido was a more than adequate compensation for ULU's pool even though not that many people seemed to realise that it was there. But, for those who still miss ULU, just a reminder that Winter Pride will be there again this year in December and the profits will help to make Pride '95 even better. I'll be there - will you? John Hein ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- SCENE NEWS ========== York: The begining of July got off to a flying start with the launch of a monthly night at the arts centre called 'Milk and Honey'. With a music policy promising Camp Retro Trash, it is hoped that this night will remain predominantly gay, unlike previous one nighters organised by the same people. We shall watch with interest. For all the Yorkies who enjoyed Pride this year, there is a special treat lined up on 1st Oct - Proud in the Park - a Lesbian and Gay festival in Rowentrees Park (how sweet) which forms part of MESMAC's M-APPEAL festival. The organisers are promising quite a few surprises. Can't wait. Now on to the Gossip we were telling you about in FOCUS. It would appear that such is the popularity of the White Horse within York's ever growing gay scene, that Paul and Dave are seeking permission to turn their letting bedrooms and dining room into a function suite. This would enable the bold lads to hold a separate gay disco. In PULSE'S humble opinion, this is well overdue. Have you ever tried to get in on a Monday night when the disco is on downstairs? Go for it guys! For those of you who usually just pass through York, and there are quite a few, you should read the advertising hoarding beside the station, next to Nestles. It reads, 'Welcome to York, where the men are hunky and chocolate's chunky'. Need I say more?? Blackpool: The list of places to visit in Blackpool is growing by the minute. Funny Girls next door to Clone Zone and Basil's On The Strand, is due to open its doors on July 8th. Funny Girls owner, Basil Newby, is quietly confident of its success. The intricate wood carved panels and balustrades add to the theatrical ambience of Blackpool's latest addition to an already busy scene. One feature of the new pub is the upstairs piano bar and restaurant - just the place for that quiet and intimate evening out. The whole feel of the place is of quality. See and enjoy. Yet another packed month of entertainment awaits you in the town of PLENTY! As well as the reduced price drinks to draw you in, there is always top named cabaret at the Flamingo, acts such as Kim Mazelle and Hazel Dean to name but two. Don't worry about everything closing on Sunday afternoons. Throughout the season Pepe's, Basil's On The Strand and The Flamingo are taking it in turn to open throughout the day. With all this going on when do you find time to sleep? (to rest that is!!!) Keep a sharp eye out for news of the August Bank Holiday Charity Extravaganza - this is going to be bigger and better than any before and we all know how spectacular they have been. That's it for this month. See you around. Tony. Glasgow: Well, the main news this month seems to be of defection to pastures new. First we have the bold Suave Gav moving round the corner to spin the turn tables at Bennets on a Saturday night in preference to Cafe Delmonica's/Club X. Then we have Big Karn going abroad to Edinburgh to join the trendy crew at C-C-Blooms in preference to the same establishment. Whats going on at at Cafe Delmonica's? We shall send out the bloodhounds and try to find out for the next issue. There has been a lot of fundraising organised by the Glasgow Bars AIDS Welfare Fund Committee and we shall be reporting in full in the next issue. In Bunnets, I hear that a heck of a lot of PAs have been lined up over the next couple of months, check the advert for details. For those of you into Jazz you could try out the GLC's Jazz Night at the Tron Theatre cafe bar on Monday 11th of July. 7pm-12.00 midnight. Tickets ukp2.50/ukp2.00 from the CCA Box Office. Sauchiehall Street. A worthwhile cause to support. Edinburgh: As exclusively revealed in last month's Scene News, July sees the opening of C-C-Blooms, Edinburghs freshest gay venture. Pulse sent our spy over to have a word with Dianne and Brian to find out a bit more about it. CCs itself is split into two levels, with the main bar/diner upstairs and the disco bar on the lower level. The idea is to create a slightly trendy, friendly and fun bar with something for everyone. Upstairs, you can dine on cuisine fit for connoisseurs, sing to the Karaoke with Big Karn and be entertained with the occasional class act. While downstairs, seven nights a week, the regular DJ, will along with DJs from other cities be spinning the best in Reggae, Soul and Dance Music. CCs will be open 7 days 12 till late-late. Over the road at QTs, July sees the visit of Sisters Slim who are sure to pack things out. Mondays also sees appearances from male dancers such as Le Homme, Chase, Bronze, and Steve Smart. There must be one there you fancy eh! Next month we shall be doing a Festival Special so watch out for all the best and most up to date info on all that is happening. Leeds: Welcome to month two of PULSE in Leeds. Primo 11 nightclub, who like many others is doing its best to raise money for local charities. recently held a night for The Day Break Trust, which we shall be reporting on in next months issue. Entertainment this month includes - Dragamania on the 15th, and The Boys on the 22nd who are sure to raise the blood pressure a bit. Not to forget drag in the form of Penny Change on the 29th and singer Michael Balton on the 5th of August. One for the diary is the appearance of Christeen Coles on August the 10th - a female version of Chubby Brown. So dont forget your laughing tackle. Also don't forget about the M-Appeal festival that includes a safer sex T-shirt fashion show and auction in the Yorkshire Playhouse. Donations include, Red or Dead, Paul Costelloe, Xavier, Foley etc. Have fun, Alec Bradford/Wakefield: As well as having the only heated beer garden come construction site, the Sun Hotel now boasts a newly fitted dance floor for all you boppers to boogie on down on at the DJs fun night on a Sunday. Over at Caligula's this month, we can see the appearances of Immaculate Deception on the 15th, Titti La Camp on the 29th, and singer Lee Jackson on the 22nd as well as the regular acts on a Wednesday and Sunday. One for the film buffs is the tour of 'Wild Things' the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival at the Bradford Film Theatre until the 21st of July. Details on 0274 820666. As we go to press we hear that M-Appeal will be running the first exclusively lesbian and gay ice skating on the 28th. Avery special guest has been lined up. Can't tell who, but it promises to be one savage night out. Tickets and info 0532-444209. Well done to Stuart, Barry and all the team at the Dolphin, who raised ukp785 for Begin (the Wakefield HIV/AIDS charity) at the recent fundraiser hosted by Kevin Peters. Monday the 11th of July sees not only the Mens Club but also the return of Genises. Promises to be a hot night. Thursday night see the best in strippers including Steve Smart,Chase and Golden Boy. To conclude this month I would like to mention an odd ball one, Pinball to be precise. The Dolphin, has as far as I know, the only proper games room in the area. Or do you know different? Replies on the back of a tenner to the usual address. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FOCUS ===== This month our deviant with the camera was out and about in York, and called in at the city's White Horse Inn. The White Horse, in its short time under the present ownership of Paul and Dave, has awakened the town's sleeping gay scene which has for some time been looking for somewhere to happen. Being in close proximity to both Leeds and Manchester, it was always going to be a job and a half attracting people to stay at home and support a local gay bar. However, under careful management, Dave and Paul, assisted by charge hand Jackie have in a few month created a very friendly atmosphere where everybody seems to know one another. Very much a locals pub. However, if you are a visitor to York, I'm sure you will be made just as welcome. The pub itself is decorated on the homely side with plates and plaques all over the place. Having a centrally placed bar make it feel busy very easily, and if you are the cruisy type there is plenty of room to squeeze past the one you fancy. The Horse's clientele is a good mixture of the sexes with gays, lesbians and straights all getting on well together. On the very popular pool table which is the centre of attraction on a Sunday for the Killer Pool competition, it's every Man or Woman for themselves. Cues and hard things to the fore. Open seven days a week, (Mon to Sat -11am 11pm. Sun 12 - 3pm and 7pm - 10.30pm) the Horse is a well known boarding place for the monthly subsidised bus to Confettis in Leeds. For the beer drinkers amongst you the Horse provides real ale in the form of Thwaites Bitter, which can be used to wash down your bar lunch, (Good combination boy). On the subject of food, the Horse provides free bar snacks on a Sunday lunch time. Apart from serving you with all your drink and food requirements, you can also stay in one of the en-suite rooms which have their own private dining room. As we go to press, we hear of a major bit of gossip regarding the White Horse, check out our scene news for the York area. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- CURTAINS ======== Culture is heading North again and it will soon be time for the Edinburgh Festival. But first, a few shows manifesting themselves in Glasgow (and All Points South). WOMEN BEHIND BARS opened in Leicester and will be touring Brighton (Pavillion) - 18 to 23 July, Oldham (Collseum) - 25 to 31 July, and Glasgow (Tron Theatre) 2 to 7 August before finishing up in Edinburgh at the Fringe. Starring the outrageous David Dale, the action takes place in a women's prison and is a glorious spoof on women-in-prison movies down the ages. Corruption of the penal system and its incarcerated innocents are the central themes in this sensationally sick New York comedy where the evil prison matron (played by David Dale), has her wicked way with the detainees. Also appearing is Stacey Charlesworth who played in the Prisoner Cell Block H live tour. THE NIGHT LARRY KRAMER KISSED ME will be at the Tron in Glasgow (18 to 20 August) before making its way across to the Festival at the Traverse. A metaphorical kiss lands on the lips of writer/performer David Drake in this invigorating, powerful and shamelessly funny celebration of contemporary gay life. Drake's fast and furious show refers to the night his political consciousness was both awakened and jolted into action after seeing Larry Kramer's landmark play The Normal Heart. His consequent emotions and frustrations are captivatingly chronicled. From coming of age, to coming out, to coming to New York, he takes you on a journey and takes you by surprise. CAMPING OUT at the Tron (25 to 27 August) sees the return of the Topp Twins who, earlier this year, performed to sold-out houses and enthusiastic reviews at Mayfest. Camping Out is a wildly funny journey through one of New Zealand's best loved traditions: the annual summer camping holiday. Set in the Happy Valley Camping Ground of the 1950's, the narrative essentially follows a day in the life of campers (the audience) who return to their camp-site 'like salmon spawning up a river' each year. Lynda, as the pink-turbanned play-suited camp mother, and Jules as the bespectacled naive camp leader, take the audience on a wild and whacky holiday adventure - complete with sausage sizzles, camp games and songs, and a premier of the twins modelling Betty Grable swimwear. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SNIPITS ======= Cincinnati - A gay bookstore and three employees were charged with pandering obscenity after undercover police rented a video of the 1975 Italian film 'Salo 120 days of Sodom'. Cathy Adams, lawyer for the Pink Pyramid bookstore states- 'They think they have a gay film, but it's not. It is actually an anti-Fascist film'. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 6 months in jail and a fine of 1,000 dollars. West Midland Police have dropped their case against Nick Griffiths a Darlington gay health club owner, following a raid earlier this year by over 60 officers. 27 men were arrested, most were later released without charge, others were given cautions. Penguin Books are to publish a young person's sex guide, the book a government minister branded as smutty. 'Your Pocket Guide to Sex' came under fire earlier this year when it was banned by the government. The book goes on sale in this month. A sperm bank in the United States, is to offer sperm collected exclusively from gay and bisexual men for lesbians. The bank in Oakland California, is expected to open later this year. The realisation of a new Gay Centre in Glasgow seems to have taken a step forward after the allocation of ukp53,000 towards the Social Strategy Fund by Strathclyde Regional Council. Strathclyde Lesbian and Gay Forum are to look at the possible sites for the proposed centre, which will receive part of the funding. Dundee has a new Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Switchboard. The new line will be open on Mondays from 7-10pm The number to call - 0382 202620. Roy Cornes, the man dubbed an 'HIV killer' by the gutter press, has died in hospital. Crones, a haemophiliac, died from an AIDS related illness. He had been accused of infecting four women with the HIV virus. Tory councillors in Edinburgh failed to stop a ukp250 grant being awarded to the 1994 National Bisexual Conference being held in Edinburgh at the beginning of August. The Grant will be used to provide cresh facilities during the conference, and not for 'sordid bisexual games' as claimed by one Tory councillor. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- PRIDE 1994 ========== Pride 1994 - (A Day in the Life of a Park) Gordon Gosnell takes a look at Pride 94 What else can we say? June the 18th 1994, Happy Birthday Pride - 25 today, 25 years since the Stonewall riots, and where are we. Our Victorian MPs have decided that we are not equal - no nookie until we are 18. Well, have I got news for them. On the afore mentioned date, at a place forever etched in the memory as 'Brockwell 94' - I was there. Nearly 200,000 lesbians and gay men told the high and mighty what they thought of their laws - EQUALITY NOW. However, this is really a story of two parks. The time is 11.30am, the place Hyde Park. 30-40 thousand are gathered to hear the pre-march speeches by such as Robert McLellan MP, Barbara Windsor, Paul Gambaccini and Michael Cashman (to name but a few). They all have the same message - EQUALITY NOW. The speeches over, the march heads off at a very leisurely pace, winding through the centre of the city passing Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament (what a racket) ending up at Great Smith Street, on to the buses and over to Brockwell. Enter park number two. Each year the park seems to be bigger and bigger (size queen) with more and more stalls and fun fare attractions. This years crowd was expected to exceed last year's total of 110,000, however this year's total exceeded even the wildest dreams of the organisers. By 2pm most of the crowd had gathered and the stalls were doing good business, the first act was on stage, the bushes were being watered among other things, and the park was truly beginning to throb. Dykes kissing dykes, dykes kissing gay men, and gay men kissing whoever they could get their hands on - everyone was in heaven. Early evening had arrived, and the main crowd was beginning to gather round the stage in anticipation of the many big name stars still to come. They had already been well entertained by the likes of Julian Clary, Yvette, Jocelyn Brown, Carol Leeming, and Ioni. >From the press pit, we could feel the atmosphere building up behind us. Looking out all we could see was a sea of faces and clapping hands enjoying being lesbian/gay, and being together. It was time for the final section of the evenings entertainment. Enter Sonia, Bananarama, Lilly Savage, Dannii Minogue, Jimmy Sommerville, D:Ream, and Bjorn Again. All doing at least a couple of numbers each. The stage was set for a high pitched finale by the one and only Boy George. The Boy himself strutted about as if he owned the place, he was back and so proud to be here. Even such an experienced entertainer as Boy George, was visibly and emotionally taken aback by the crowd and the electric feel to the whole place. By the time the fireworks had gone off, the acts on stage just didn't want to end this memorable night. But end it they did, till next year. One final note, whilst doing a radio interview Michael Cashman, came away with the old one liner that sums it all up, 'We're here, we're queer, but we ain't going shopping'. Stay Proud Brothers and Sisters... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ KRIZTAL GAZES ============= Cancer June 21-July 20 Financial matters take a turn for the better so you may well be treating your self. In these days of HIV and AIDS, many of us are becoming a bit more lax when it comes to the common sexually transmitted diseases that affect the sexually active. For those of you who do not attend a GUM clinic on a regular basis, it might be a good idea to do so. It's all confidential so you don't need to worry about your mum finding out (that you're taking care of yourself!). The following is a sample of the questions raised at Genito Urinary Medicine (GUM) clinics to give you some idea of what we're here to help you with. Q) I have a few small fleshy lumps around my back passage and on my penis, what could this be? A) From this description it would appear that you have genital warts. Genital Warts are caused by a virus that is passed from person to person by direct skin contact. Make an appointment at your GUM clinic where this can be easily treated. Q) I have painful blisters and broken skin around my back passage, I am also feeling a bit run down. What could be causing this? A) It is possible you could have Genital Herpes. A visit to the doctor or GUM clinic for treatment should do the trick. Q) I have a discharge from my penis and suffer great pain when I pass water. I think this might be a form of VD. Am I correct? A) Yes I think you are correct. Sounds as if you have been playing around without a condom. A discharge is usually the sign of an infection, make an appointment at the GUM clinic where they can run some tests and give you the correct course of treatment. Before you attend the clinic for your appointment try not to pass water for about two hours before hand. Avoid sexual contact until you have been seen by a doctor. Well that's it for this month, remember to play safe and try to pass on the safer sex message. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- BACKTALK ======== Serial monogamy is about as socially desirable as serial homicide. I've just watched an affair break up after some six years because of this bizarre superstition. Throughout the relationship, both partners continued to have Bits On The Side (BOTS). But, instead of being up front about their BOTS, they took the road of concealment with the inevitable unfortunate discoveries on both sides. 'I'm sorry and I'll never be unfaithful to you again', was the oft heard wail at their house. Now, one discovery too many has taken place and all their friends are taking sides as the record collection, the cats and the mortgage become a battle ground. At an international gay conference some years ago I was asked by a rather pleasant Thai guy if I had a boyfriend. When I answered in the affirmative, he looked sad and told me 'You should have lied because now I can't have sex with you'. I explained that my boyfriend was back at home (probably in bed with somebody else) and that we had an open relationship. That didn't matter. For my Thai, the fact that I had a boyfriend was enough to rule out sex - casual or otherwise. I suppose I can understand long standing monogamous relationships (although I certainly don't want one for myself). If both partners are truly satisfied by and with each other, there seems little point in involving anybody else. But serial monogamy (like RS232 ports - sorry, obscure computer joke specially for our online edition) seems more trouble than it's worth. 'I only went out with him for three days, but I was faithful to him for all that time' sounds ludicrous - (although I've actually heard it from one promiscuous queen who should have known better). Replace 'days' with 'weeks' or 'hours' or 'years' and it doesn't make much more sense. How many relationships do you know that have failed to run their proper course because of 'the other man' intruding? Yet, if the participants in the primary relationship had come to an understanding that their relationship was indeed primary and anything else was secondary, the chances are that they'd still be together. True, such open relationships do require a bit more work. It helps if both partners choose the same night to see their BOTS. It also helps if both partners' tastes in BOTS are different (unless threesomes are a practical proposition). I've always believed in having sex with my friends - although I've rarely been able to put this into practice due either to their poor taste in men (ie not fancying me) or their pig ugliness (Hi, Gordon!). Open relationships are merely a development of this approach to life - although at times it does get difficult to timetable my particular menage where my SO (Significant Other) has another SO and 2 BOTS and I have a BOTS (and vacancies for several others - please send further and better particulars and recent photograph c/o Pulse). A of an open relationship is a cat. When your SO is away shagging their BOTS, your puss will, at least, keep the space warm. Of course, if you don't like cats, you obviously aren't worth knowing and most probably don't have an SO anyway! Dogmatic? Moi? --------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTACTS ======== To reply to a Contact Ad: Just pop your reply in an envelope with the box number written in the TOP RIGHT corner and place the envelope with your reply inside another envelope with two loose first class stamps.
