They handed over a petition to Mr. Ranieri Tallarigo the Italian Embassador to The Hague (see below) while in front of the Embassy gay activists of the GreenLeft party picketed against Italian fascists. To the Embassador of Italy in the Netherlands The Hague The Hague June 8 th 1994 Your Excellency, The recent political developments in Italy are a cause of great worries to GroenLinks. The elections resulted in a coalition government that includes representatives of a political party which directly bases its ideology on fascist predecessors. Prominent representatives of these parties over the last weeks have made public statements, that make us conclude that they don~t just stick to theoretically questionable thinking. As most appaling examples we quote the remarks of a fascist candidate for the European Elections Buscaroli, who wished to lock up homosexuals in concentration camps. But also the remarks of the President of the Italian Senate, mrs. Rivetti on the position of women in your country make us worry; or the remarks by the prime minister Berlusconi on the younger Mussolini. International cooperation between our country and Italy, in close cooperation with other member states of the United Nations, the European Union and the Council of Europe is based on the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights. In addition to these international treaties there are numerous resolutions of the European Parliament, condemning the uneaqual treatment and discrimination of women and persons with different sexual preferences. Our representatives in the European Parliament took initiatives for such resolutions or supported them and will energetically continue to do so. In spite of the good habit of non interference in internal affairs, the recent developments in Italian politics give us reason to ask you kindly to inform your government of our concerns. Fundamental rights, as layed down in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights, cannot be restricted by national boundaries. Yours faithfully Nel van Dijk (European Parliament) Joost Lagendijk ( candidate European Parliament GroenLinks) Paul Rosenm ller (Chair of the Parliamentary Group of GroenLinks) Leoni Sipkes (Parliamentary Group GroenLinks) -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- # Hein Verkerk (heinv@hacktic.nl) | ____ | Chasing prize-winning plumbers # # fax: +31 20 6251849 | \ / | and catholic pets.... # # voice:+31 20 6248186 | \/ | (Yes they do exist !) # ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
