AP 12/23 12:56 EST V0114 BREDA, Netherlands (AP) -- Five cadets at the Royal Military Academy were suspended for taking part in an alleged "sex orgy" in front of other cadets on campus. A Defense Ministry spokesman said Thursday the five men were suspended indefinitely after other students accused them of grossly indecent conduct. There is no ban on gays in the Dutch military, and the Dutch have generally derided the U.S. controversy over the issue. The five are alleged to have engaged in a variety of "physical acts" in front of other male and female cadets, said the spokesman, Paul Hartman. Hartman refused to comment on a report by De Telegraaf, the nation's largest daily, which described the incident last week as a "sex orgy." But he said the five are accused of "severely crossing the line of good behavior." "We have no rules here against homosexuality among consenting students in the privacy of their rooms," Hartman said. "But there are rules of good behavior that apply here, or in a high school or anywhere in Dutch society." The five face dismissal from the academy and possible criminal charges of violating public decency laws if the charges are substantiated, Hartman said. The Pentagon outlined its "don't ask, don't tell" policy allowing gays in the military Wednesday. The new regulations, which allow homosexuals and lesbians to serve as long as they don't engage in homosexual conduct, has met with strong opposition from some U.S. military leaders and politicians. The Dutch military opened its doors to gays in the 1970s in line with Dutch society's tolerant view toward different sexual orientations.
