No-one seemed to be aware that he was coming and many of us were surprised by his visit. He spoke at a lecture organised by the Irish Times and Harvard University at University College Dublin on Africa. He also met the Irish Presdent and Prime Minister - I am not aware as yet if the issue of human rights and lesbian and gay rights was brought up during those discussions. Megan Stuart, Lesbian Gay and Bisexual Rights Officer for the Union of Students in Ireland did manage to gain entrance to the lecture and embarrassed Mugabe ( and those who organised his visit) by asking him to apologise to Irish lesbians and gay men for the remarks he made about lesbians and gay men in Zimbawbe. Mugabe's speech had included references to the development in Africa annd also enlightenment. He refused to apologise (no surprise) and made reference to his education by Irish Missionary Jesuit Priests who "taught him the bible". Enough said Suzy ************************************************************************ ****** * To subscribe to QUEERPLANET, send mail to: majordomo@abacus.oxy.edu * * In the mail message, enter ONLY the words: subscribe queerplanet * * To unsubscribe to QUEERPLANET, send mail to: majordomo@abacus.oxy.edu * * In the mail message, enter ONLY the words: unsubscribe queerplanet * * Words in the Subject: line are NOT processed! * ************************************************************************ ******
