From: Chris Ambidge Subject: Text of Bill C-33, amending Canadian HR Act Date: Tue, 30 Apr 1996 13:36:13 -0400 This is the full text of Bill C-33. The Canadian Human Rights Act applies to employment and goods/services provisions for those under federal jurisdiction. This means the federal public service, crown corporations (like the CBC), the Mounties, th e armed forces, employees in federally regulated industries (banking, transportation, telecommunications, etc). It means about 10% of the populace. Most people are covered by their provincial/ territorial human rights legislation. But on with the (English version of the ) text: ======== Bill C-33 An Act to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act Whereas the government of Canada affirms the dignity and worth of all individuals and recognizes that they have the right to be free from discrimination in employment and the provision of goods and services, and that that right is based on respect for the rule of law and lawful conduct by all; And whereas the Government recognizes and affirms the importance of family as the foundation of Canadian society and that nothing in this Act alters its fundamental role in society; Now, therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows: 1. Section 2 of the Canadian Human Rights Act is replaced by the following: [Purpose] 2. The purpose of this Act is to extend the laws in Canada to give effect, within the purview of Parliament, to the principle that *all individuals* should have an equal opportunity to make for *themselves* the *lives* that *they are* able and *wish* to have, consistent with *their* duties and obligations as *members* of society, without being hindered in or prevented from doing so by discriminatory practices based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, *sexual orientation,* marital status, family status, disability or conviction for an offence for which a pardon has been granted. 2. Subsection 3(1) of the Act is replaced by the following: [Prohibited grounds of discrimination] 3. (1) For all purposes of this Act, *the* prohibited grounds of discrimination are race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, *sexual orientation,* marital status, family status, disability and conviction for which a pardon has been granted. [Note: Many of the changes in wording are aimed at improving gender- inclusive language in federal legislation, and replaces cumbersome phrasing like "himself or herself".] ==== Chris with thanks to Ron Chaplin's carpal tunnels -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- ** if the planets are misaligned, I may have been logged in under an ** ** assumed name.
