Subject: 27 JULY Statement from GALZ on Zimbabwe International Book Fair From: KUNZWANA Date: Wed, 24 Jul 96 13:05:12 +0200 STATEMENT FROM THE GAYS AND LESBIANS OF ZIMBABWE (GALZ) BOOK FAIR TASK FORCE 23 July 1996 The Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe seek to show we are a respectable and responsible part of society by participating in the Zimbabwe International Book Fair. GALZ intends to provide information about human rights and the law as they affect homosexuals in Zimbabwe and to describe our counselling services. There is also an anthology written by gay Zimbabweans about their experiences in winning acceptance in our society. This literature is purely educational and in no way appeals to base or prurient interests. Our aim is to distribute the material to adults, but any school children who might read our pamphlets will only learn about the law, our rights under the constitution and the need for tolerance in our society. By participating in the Book Fair, GALZ is exercising its members' fundamental constitutional rights to freedom of speech, expression and association. We believe that participation in the Book Fair will foster the open and free discussion needed to reduce prejudice. Although homosexuality may be considered a taboo by many Zimbabweans, there are many other Zimbabweans who are willing to accord tolerance and acceptance of gays. GALZ supports the right to personal privacy and responsible sex between consenting adults. We are in favour of protection of children from any form of sexual abuse.
