Date: Thu, 2 May 1996 15:36:40 -0400 From: "RADLOFF, J, Jenny" Subject: Pink Radio South Africa In the Pink is an hour long lesbigay radio programme broadcast weekly on Bush Radio 89.5FM, a community radio station located in Cape Town, South Africa. Our programme is broadcast live every Thursday evening from 8:30 - 9:30 p.m. Since the inception of a new democratic order in South Africa and the inclusion of the sexual orientation clause in our constitution (the final constitution to be launched next week!), the airwaves have been deregulated and community radio stations are now able to provide a voice for those previously denied this opportunity. We have been on air since August last year and apart from regular features such as local and international news, public service announcements, health slot, media watch, book, movie and theatre reviews, we look at issues relevant to the lesbigay, transgendered and queer community. In the Pink is entirely volunteer driven and has no budget. In order to include as many volunteers as possible, we rotate responsibilities on a 3 monthly basis. This gives us a chance to be presenters, interviewers, technicians, reporters etc. It also offers a chance to represent the different languages of our community. Bush Radio provides training and free space from which to produce and broadcast. As Bush Radio is a community radio station, our listenership is limited to the Cape Town area. But we are able to conduct live telephone interviews and in this way can include people from the rest of South Africa and the world. Our monthly Open Forums is a space which we have created for people to come and give feedback, criticism, ideas and for people to find out how they can become involved. As far as we know In the Pink is the first radio programme to be broadcast in Africa. We would enjoy hearing from other l/g/b/t/q radio initiatives.
