He is a well-known "activist" for gay rights and is an honest, forthright and very articulate man. His first appointment as judge was to lead a parliamentary inquiry into South Africa's shamefull weapons industry (weapons to Rwanda, Yemen and Iraq!). He is co-editor of a book on homosexuality in South Africa. Other gay people are also active: in Cape Town openly gay advocate Gerald Joshman regularly appears as acting justice and in Johannesburg a well known human rights activist lawyer Cathy Satcherwell, who is lesbian, was mooted for the constitutional court (the highest authority in SA), but there was some controversy about something she had said. I'm sure it will not be long before she will be a justice. Thank you to Jude Rene Montarsi for drawing my attention to Ron Buckmire's enquiry. I was off the list for a few days and have obviously missed some spectacular fireworks.
