FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS GIVEN AT THE END OF THE POST. (from an article by Kent Bradley) The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Foundation of Northern California is encouraging women, lesbians, gay men, people of color, and people with disabilities to apply for the position of director of their First Amendment Education Project. The project is a special outreach effort of the ACLU to initiate and improve civil rights and civil liberties education in secondary schools throughout northern California. It is a unique program that serves both as a resource and as advocate for educators and students. The full-time director will work closely with teachers to develop exciting ways to teach students about the Bill of Rights. The necessity of teaching American schoolchildren about the Constitution is particularly crucial right now, civil libertarians say, when the rising religious right is attempting to obscure the separation of church and state. The ACLU is looking to interview candidates with excellent speaking and writing skills, the ability to work evenings and weekends, the ability to travel, and a commitment to and experience with working with racially and ethnically diverse groups of young people. At least five years' experience in public education, community organizing and/or teaching is also requested. Perhaps the most important qualification for the job is a strong understanding of and commitment to civil rights and civil liberties, and the principles and work of the ACLU. **** If you are interested, submit a resume and three references with a cover letter to: Education Project Director Search, c/o M.
