Date: Thu, 9 Nov 1995 23:11:10 -0800 (PST) From: Richard Isaac Subject: BIGOT BUSTERS (WA) FINAL VOLUNTEER TRAINING, 11/19/95 Greetings, Initiatives 166 and 167 have less than 60 days remaining to collect the signatures they need to send their anti-gay legislation to Olympia. This phase of the campaign is expected to see increased activity, and perhaps the use of paid-signature gatherers, which have been very effective in other campagigns. The need for the community to become active in opposing the signature-gathering is critical at this juncture. BIGOT BUSTERS (Greater Seattle), dedicated to defeating these initiatives in the signature-gathering phase by employing rapid-response, on-the-spot voter education ("counter-petitioning"), will be holding its final volunteer training of the campaign: * Sunday, November 19, 1995 * noon to 3pm * Seattle Counseling Services, 1820 E Pine, b/w 18th and 19th on Pine, near Madison, in Seattle * free of charge * refreshments provided NOTE: Unlike other trainings, we are asking those who wish to attend to pre-register (with no commitment) by calling the BB hotline at 767-2457. The first 20 people who register will receive a free "DECLINE TO SIGN" bumper sticker. The training, redesigned since last year using professional instructional techniques, and led by experienced counter-petitioners from last year's successful campaign, will cover: *verbal repertoire training (what to say in a variety of situations involving passersby, petitioners, the media, authority figures, and emotional behavior from sympathizers and opponents alike) *issues in the current campaign, including legal issues *an overview of the Bigot Buster/Decline to Sign organization *the philosophy of counter-petitioning and will include: *role-playing and practice-interactions with each other so the basic elements of counter-petitioning will become familiar and natural *videotaped examples of good and flawed interactions, which should be easy to distinguish by the end of the training *handouts of sample dialogues, and the do's-and-don't's of counter-petitioning *questions and answers. ALL ARE WELCOME to attend without obligation or committment. The training is open to the public (and the media) at NO CHARGE. Those who are considering doing counter-petitioning this year MUST attend at least one training. Those interested in other support roles (fundraising, media, outreach, etc.) are highly encouraged to attend. It is especially critical to take action to defeat I-166 and I-167 in the signature-gathering phase this year (ending on 29 Dec 1995). These dangerous initiatives, legalizing discrimination, curtailing constitutional rights, imposing censorship, and placing religious-based, state-imposed ideology over the best interests of children in need, will either be passed into law or put on the 1996 ballot if they gather enough signatures. Counter-petitioning was extremely successful in defeating I-608 and I-610 last year; it can be done again!
