Date: Wed, 4 Feb 1998 18:50:20 -0800 (PST) From: Jeff Harris Subject: Seattle Senator Will Support Gay Marriage Ban King 5 News reported Feb. 4, --I confirmed the script with the news room over the phone--, that the State Senator representing Washington's gayest districts said she would support the GOP bill banning gay marriages (HB1130) in the Senate, and vote to overrule Governor Lock's expected veto rather than face a statewide referendum on the same subject. Sen. Patricia Thibaudeau called the initiative "divisive" but said that passing that the law (HB1130) changed nothing because same sex marriages were already illegal in the state. The report also said state Democrats did not want to run in '98 on a ballot containing this divisive measure. Thibaudeau is running for reelection in the November 1998 elections. Thibaudeau represents these Seattle neighborhoods: Capitol Hill, First Hill, University District, Madison Park, Washington Park, Broadmoor, Montlake, Wallingford, Madison Valley and parts of Fremont, Laurelhurst, Ravenna, Denny Regrade and downtown Seattle. You can call and write Senator Thibaudeau at work and at home to let her know what you think of this strategy of sacrificing the freedoms of gay taxpayers to insure her own reelection. We must fight this in every forum the legislature, the ballot box and the courts. As Legal Marriage Alliance spokesperson John Wilkinson recently told the Seattle Times, giving up is . Pat" Subject: RE: Seattle Senator Will Support Gay Marriage Ban Date: Thu, 5 Feb 1998 12:31:33 -0800 Thank you for the message regarding HB 1130 and SB 5400. First, I want to make clear that I will not vote to override Governor Locke's veto of the gay marriage ban. I believe all of our citizens should have the same rights and responsibilities, including the right of same-sex couple to marry. I am very unhappy about the ban bills. If it were possible to remove the referendum clause, that would be the best solution, but we do not have the votes to do that. Please keep in touch. Senator Pat Thibaudeau
