Date: Sun, 29 Jun 1997 20:36:51 -0700 From: Eros Publishing Subject: Press Release Beyond the Edge Café To Host Photography Exhibit. Beyond The Edge café will host an exhibit by local photographer, John Tozzi. The exhibit will open on July 1, with a meet-the-artist reception on Sunday, July6 from 6:30 to 9:00 PM. John’s work, black and white male portraiture, has been seen around town for the past several years, at such places as Café Paradiso and Bauhous, as well as a previous engagement at Beyond The Edge Café. John believes his choice of subject matter has much to do with his popularity. “For the most part, the people I use in my work are average, everyday people. I do this for two reasons. The first reason is because I find more of a challenge in taking ‘everyman’ and bringing out the qualities that make them special, thus allowing them to see themselves in a different way. When I see photographs of beautiful, muscular, sculptured individuals, I personally tend to notice the models first and the photographs second. By using a more common look, people tend to notice the photograph first instead. The second reason is because, by using a more average look, my art becomes much more accessible to the general public. It is easier for people to relate to my work, because they see someone not unlike themselves. It is very important to me that people see beyond the man and see into the emotional life of the photo. By seeing someone they can more easily identify with, I feel they can look inward and feel those same emotions.” Beyond The Edge Café is located at 703 E. Pike in Seattle. The exhibit will run through July 31.
