|does anyone have information as to what is going on in Oregon, |Colorado and Washington? Just curious. Washington, yes... tho' I'm an official spokesperson for nobody... The CAW is in trouble here; H.O.W. had a big, big head start comparied to other opposition groups and has therefore been able to get organized. Protests have been held at all the Christian Coalition meetings we've known about, and C.A.W. turnout has been relatively small. Currently, the CAW is fighting with another Radical Right group over which one will run the campaign. This other group is called the Washington Public Affairs Council. WPAC successfully overturned, via referendum, Tacoma's gay/bi/lesbian civil rights protections some years ago. WPAC has filed with the state (elements from press release enclosed) notice that it will be gathering signatures for 1994 as well. Hopefully, this two-pronged approach will backfire, and the infighting will hurt both still further. CAW people have been seen organizing in the South Seattle area, which is scary but I suppose predicable. No public activity from them yet. Their representative at the "gays in the military" debate was an ineffective nonentity. At this point, WPAC is probably a bigger worry, though CAW will be pretty evil soon - there's no question in my mind that, while we've managed to keep them underground, that they're organizing. On the other hand, there was very very little anti-gay protest at the Gay Rodeo in Enumclaw, a very conservative area of western Washington, and, in fact, attendence was quite a bit better than expected. The Libertarian Party has announced its support for Hands Off Washington, becoming the first "known" political party in the state to do so. Several polititians have announced support - even a couple of Republicans, I think - but no party has given it its endorcement yet. There was an attempted political bombing of a gay bar here this summer - the same people who blew up the NAACP office in Tacoma and which was implicated in a series of planned terrorist attacks. However, the bombing was very badly botched, nobody was hurt, and very little damage was done. Anyway. That's sort of a summation. - R'ykandar. ----- begin text ----- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 13, 1993 INITIATIVE TO STOP SPECIAL RIGHTS FOR HOMOSEXUALS Washington Public Affairs Council announced July 13, its campaign to prohibit the state from granting special minority status based on homosexual preference or practice. ..."we must act now." ..."The homosexual political movement has been gaining ground in recent months", according to (Jeff) Swindler. He cites the following advances: * Adoption of House Bill 1569, which officially grants homosexuals minority status for purposes of the state malicious harassment law. HB 1569 would impose harsher penalties _based on one's thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes_ regarding homosexuality. * State agencies are requiring their employees to attend sensitivity training seminars in order to _force_ them to accept homosexuality as a normal alternative lifestyle. * Under a "gay rights" executive order, state agencies are allowing homosexuals to be foster parents, work with troubled teens, and have _preferential treatment in employment_. * The legislature came within one vote of passing HB 1443, _granting special legal privileges to homosexuals in such areas as employment and housing_. ----- end text -----
