Lon Mabon and Citizens Alliance to hold meeting in Seattle By Sally J. Clark Editor Seattle Gay News ___________________ The Citizens Alliance of Washington State, CAW, one of two groups threatening an anti-Gay Civil rights initiative for 1994, will hold their first major meeting in Seattle Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Aurora Nazarene church at 7 PM. CAW Chairman Robert Larimer is slated to attend, as is Lon Mabon, head of the Oregon citizens Alliance. Mabon is architect of last year's Measure 9 campaign in Oregon which sought to legalize discrimination against Lesbians and Gays in Oregon, and to classify homosexuality as perverse and on a par with bestiality. Since Measure 9 was defeated by voters in November, the OCA has filed discriminatory initiatives in notably conservative towns and counties and has won in nearly every case. Mabon formed the Citizens Alliance of Washington, as well as an Idaho Citizens ALliance, in January of this year and chose Larimer as its chief. Larimer works as a packing machine operator in Vancouver, Washington, but has worked for extreme conservative causes and candidates in the Vancouver area since the mid-80's. Larimer has stated that his ultimate goal though denying equal rights to Lesbians and Gays is to "pull down... a lot of the liberal agenda." Activists in Seattle are gearing up to "welcome": Mabon and Larimer to Seattle. Mabon traveled to Seattle late last year to participate in a KCTS Channel 9 panel on Republican politics and was greeted by hundreds of protesters outside the studios. Washington Citizens for Fairness/Hands Off Washington Chairman Charlie Brydon advises Seattle to give Mabon an even bigger crowd this time. "Let's have the city of Seattle give a very warm welcome to Mr. Mabon," said Brydon, adding that a show of numbers and commitment is important in countering the meeting. "I think we also have to raise the issue of Tax-empt churches sheltering these overtly political groups and events." Terrry Kennedy of Queer Nation also encouraged people to go to the Aurora Nazarene Church to show the citizens Alliance that people in Seattle won't tolerate their goals or tactics. "Whenever Lon Mabon and his other hate-merchants come to town they need to know that they're being watched."
