On the school board decision front, close to a thousand students walked out of East and West High Schools to protest the board's decision to ban all clubs in order to stamp out gay/straight alliances. The students at East High got a commitment from Principal Kay Petersen that he will work to keep the clubs and a commitment from Superintendent Darline Robles to meet with students next week. Students at West marched to the state's capitol and protested on the steps. They then marched down to the school board's offices, packing the conference room, and heard from the board members who voted to keep the clubs. The four board members who voted to ban all clubs did not address the students. On a terrible side note, as students marched to the capitol a girl was seriously injured by a car. RALLY ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24 AT 10:00 A.M. IN LIBERTY PARK *****The Utah Senate passed SB 246 today.****** SB 246, introduced by Senator Craig Taylor, would regulate the behavior and speech of teachers both in school and in their private lives. Private actions of school employees and volunteers are prohibited if the employee or volunteer should have know that the action would undermine "the morals of school children" and if it would lead to "substantial interference or disruption in the normal activities of the school." The good news is that because of all of the work by activists who wrote and called their senators and because of the outstanding lobbying efforts by Lyn Taylor, Gary and Mildred Watts, and Jed Clark, the senators debated the bill for well over an hour on the Senate floor yesterday. It was exciting to hear senators talk about the rights of teachers in their private lives. Furthermore, senators rose to talk about the high suicide rate among gay teenagers, about the isolation that gay youth experience, and the need that young lesbians and gays have for safe places to meet.
