Date: Tue, 20 Feb 1996 18:52:31 -0800 From: jessea@uclink2.berkeley.edu (Jessea NR Greenman) Subject: ACTION ALERT--UTAH BILL UP FOR VOTE [from NGLTF and the Utah Human Rights Coalition] Wednesday, Feb. 21st, Utah's Senate will be voting on SB 246, which would prevent school employees and faculty from discussing homosexuality (among other topics considered to be "immoral") with students. "In keeping with the requirements of Subsection (a), and because school employees and volunteers serve as examples to their students, they may not, in their official capacities, encourage, condone, or support engaging in illegal conduct. "In order to insure the effective performance of school personnel, the limitations described in Subsection (b) also apply to a school employee or volunteer acting in a private capacity, if: that person knew or reasonably should have known that the action would undermine the health, safety, welfare, or morals of school children or the confidence of the public in the operation of schools; and that action results in a material or substantial interference or disruption in the normal activities of the school. "School districts may not provide training of school employees or volunteers that encourages, condones, or supports engaging in illegal conduct." The following information is from the co-chair of the Utah Human Rights Coalition. You can contact them at 801-484-4522 for more information. ____________________________________________________________ Subject: HELP! From: cdorchard@earthlink.net (Charlene Orchard) at Internet Date: 2/20/96 11:46 AM IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO CALL YOUR SENATOR. SB 246 will probably not come up for a floor vote until Wednesday, February 21. There is still time for you to call senators and ask them to vote against the bill because it infringes on the First Amendment rights of school employees and volunteers, even in their private, non-school related activities. # County(ies) Name/Party Address 1 Salt Lake Robert C.
