Nelson appointed to Salt Lake County panel

SALT LAKE CITY - David Nelson, the founder of the four-year-old
political-action committee Gay and Lesbian Utah Democrats, was appointed
today by the Salt Lake County Human Services Advisory Council to serve as a
council allocation-panel member.

Four allocation panels review and recommend applicants for county
social-services block-grant funding. The council reviews the recommendations,
hears and decides any appeals, and makes final recommendations to the county
Board of Commissioners.

"I'm pleased to be a part of the process that helps non-profit organizations
provide important social services to low- and moderate-income people in the
county," Nelson said. "These organizations offer services which include
outpatient counseling, prevention and education, family planning, and
information and referral services for people who are at risk for more
intensive help."

Organizations that have recently received the grants include the Utah AIDS
Foundation, the YWCA Peer Approach to Counseling Teens project and Planned
Parenthood of Utah.
