GLUD succeeds with Salt Lake County nondiscrimination compromise

SALT LAKE CITY - After two days of political negotiations and criticism, Gay
and Lesbian Utah Democrats leaders won today a compromise to keep the
protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation, among other
things, in two Salt Lake County ordinances which prohibit discrimination in
county-government employment and services.

The county Board of Commissioners was to consider a sweeping bill on Monday
that would have removed all references of protected categories including
sexual orientation from the ordinances, but, after discussions with GLUD
leaders and receiving national criticism, the board revised the bill to
restrict some employment benefits and services except where required by state
or federal laws or contract.

"We're pleased that the board has agreed to keep the protection of
equal-employment rights for bisexual, gay and lesbian people in county
government," GLUD Chair Michael Aaron said. "But, it's discouraging to us
that this action further destabilizes same-sex partnerships and families by
making it more difficult for bisexual, gay and lesbian county employees to
receive the same benefits like health care for their same-sex partners."
