GLUD sees compromise in Salt Lake County nondiscrimination fight

SALT LAKE CITY - Gay and Lesbian Utah Democrats leaders accepted today a
compromise plan to keep the protection against discrimination based on sexual
orientation, among other things, in two Salt Lake County ordinances which
prohibit discrimination in county-government employment and services.

The compromise bill is planned to be considered by the county Board of
Commissioners at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday in room N1100 at the county
Government Center at 2001 South State Street in Salt Lake City. If passed,
the bill would repeal the marital status category of both ordinances and
restrict some employment benefits and services except where required by state
or federal laws.

"We're happy that the board of commissioners has agreed to consider this
compromise bill," GLUD Chair Michael Aaron said. "We're hopeful that this
bill will be supported by a majority of the commissioners and not threaten
the protections against unfair discrimination based on sexual orientation."
