This morning I also typed up this letter and sent it to the Mayor of Springfield and the Springfield Chamber of Commerce. I encourage others to write letters expressing their surprise and dismay at the events in Springfield. This afternoon I am going to move my bank accounts to a different credit union that does not do business in Springfield. Thursday, May 21, 1992 Mayor Bill Morrisette 225 Fifth Street Springfield, Oregon 97477 cc: Springfield Chamber of Commerce Dear Mr. Mayor, I would like to express my deepest dismay and regret that the voters of the City of Springfield who elected you have also passed ballot measure 20-08. While I realize that you did not support this measure, I direct this letter to you as the chief executive officer of the city -- and the man who will be expected to pick up the pieces of your fragmented community. You and your city's council may be advised that I have immediately suspended all business transactions with any resident of Springfield and any companies located with its city limits. Furthermore, word of the vote on measure 20-08 has been transmitted electronically over the InterNet across the country and around the world. Springfield's infamy has only begun to spread. I am also encouraging my friends, family, and clientele to avoid Springfield businesses and organizations. As a consultant, I will make absolutely no referrals to companies which are located in Springfield under any circumstance. The moral turpitude of this measure cannot be overlooked by any person of conscience. While only the courts may now reverse this ill-thought course, those of us who were unable to vote at the polls on Tuesday will vote with our dollars against this measure again and again, as long as it remains part of Springfield. This is truly the calm before the storm; I foresee a very hard time ahead for the City of Springfield as it deals with explosive legal and political issues. This measure is divisive and hateful, and we are just beginning to see just how pervasive that hate is in your community. My best wishes, Mr. Mayor, to you and those in your community who have retained any shred of decency. Thank you for your time and attention. Sincerely, David Casti The address for the Chamber of Commerce is: Springfield Chamber of Commerce 101 South A Street Springfield, Oregon 97477
