OHIO NOW 4207 Lorain Avenue, Suite #4 Cleveland, Ohio 44113 (614) 281-4255 IS THE BUDGET AN APPROPRIATE PLACE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUES? An inappropriate amendment may be attached to the proposed state budget by Representative Fox and Senator Watts. This amendment would limit family housing at state-assisted four-year colleges and universities. Housing is a civil rights issue and deserves to be heard in an appropriate forum. Keep this amendment out of the 1994-1995 State of Ohio Budget. CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING: 1. No state money is used for housing. Family housing as well as dormitory housing, at these institutions is paid for by residence and board fees by those students living there. 2. State funding for these state-assisted four-year colleges and universities is used to subsidize the tuition of in-state students, and thus goes towards purely academic related items, not housing. 3. Is it appropriate for the state of Ohio to be mandating discriminatory policy directed towards lesbians, gays & bisexuals, to the stat-assisted colleges and universities. 4. Some the the state assisted colleges and universities which will be effected by this are: Bowling Green State University The Ohio State University Cleveland State University University of Akron Kent State University University of Cincinnati Miami University of Ohio University of Toledo Ohio University Wright State University Shawnee State University Youngstown State University 5. Civil Rights issues involving race, ethnicity, religion, gender, marital status, disability and sexual orientation deserve an appropriate forum. These issues warrant the opportunity to be openly discussed in a formal and appropriate hearing, and either passed or rejected on their own merits.
