Subject: Tarheel Tidbits Date: Sun, 16 Jan 1994 21:15:10 -0500 (EST) The following is the latest news and gossip from the Old North State: - The Triangle Business and Professional Guild now has over 300 members and has formed a second chapter in the Triad which is meeting monthly at a location between Greensboro and Winston- Salem. - There are nw two gay BBS in the City of Oaks, GLIE at 919-833- 1968 and Pink Triangle at 919-846-9443. The Queen City also offers a gay BBS. - Duke University is offering a class on gay and lesbian studies this semester with, I think, three sections. - The Gay Mens Chorus of western North Carolina performed their annual holiday concert at All Souls Episcopal Church in Biltmore this Christmas season with about 125 in attendance. Their next performance will be at All Souls on 13 Feb at 7:30. - UNC-A's Gay and Lesbian Assocation co-sponsored a gay and lesbian film series last fall. The last night of the series was devoted to a critical issues symposium to discuss points of the films. The pannel consisted ofeveral facultyty members. - NC Pride ended the entry period for designes for the logo for this Pride march and celebration to be held in June in the Queen City. The Tarheel State holds one Pride march in the state. On the odd year, the march is held in the City of Oaks during the long session of the General Assembly. On even years the march is held in various cities around the state. The Queen City won the honor for this year's site. - NC Pride 1994 will hold its first community dinner of the year on 17 Jan at the Unitarian Church at 234 N. Sharon Amity in the Queen City at 7 p.m. - The Burke County chapter of the ARC and the AIDS Leadership Foothills- Area Alliance co-sponsored an HIV/AIDS forum on Crosslink in Morganton on 14 Jan. - Diagnosed cases of AIDS in the Old North State increased by 43% in 1993 with 4,151 cases being reported by year's end. - A man in Hillsboro has been ordered to stand trial foov death of his ex-lover. The charge has been downgraded to second-degree murder after the judge heard arguements that the killer had acted in self-defense against unwanted sxual advances. - A man in Gastonia has been charged with assult with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer after throwing a towl soaked in blood susposed to be infected with HIV in the officer's face. - Gay students at ASU in Boone say the atmosphere in Boone and on campus is better than it was just three years ago but gay, lesbian and bi- sexual students are still afraid to come out. ASU is still not a peaceful place for out students. - NC Public Televsion continues to get many calls in response to Maupin's The Tales of the City being shown. He grew up in the City of Oaks. We saw the censored version here but at least we saw it. Gay and lesbian theme broadcasts are often passed up by our public TV. - A Marine has been charged with assult with a deadly weapon with intent to kill Danny Leonard, aka Brandy Alexander and owner of gay Friend's Lounge, in Jacksonville, home of Camp Lejeune. The Marine is free on $5000 bond. Leonard was stabbed by the Marine as they were preparing to engage in sex. They had dated on several occasions And that is how it has been in North Carolina, my home state. -YHT
