Subject: Tarheel Tidbits Date: Tue, 11 Jan 1994 20:18:17 -0500 (EST) The following is the latest in news and gossip from the Old North State. I was pleased to see that someone, our friend Ron B., I think, wanted to use Tarheel Tidbits in QRD. I'm glad that Tidbits is of interest and of use to people and anyone may feel free to reuse the information as they see fit as long as it is used in accordance with GayNet regulations. A disclaimer from YHT: Tarheel Tidbits is news and gossip that I see and hear. Sometimes I have to digest a long article to get a readible news item and I may not digest it correctly. And I pass along gossip from the community. I'm not a professional journalist and I don't have an editor to correct grammer and facts. I'm pleased to say WUNC from the Southern Part of Heaven is showing Tales of the City. As previously noted, Armistead Maupin was "raised" in the City of Oaks as we'd say here. And the funny thing is that he worked for Jesse Helms at WRAL back before Jesse became an evil senator. Do y'all think Jesse is watching the Tales? As I pointed out, I don't have an editor so I'm having to reprent a correction/retraction. I noted that David Funderburk, a 1986 Jesse Helms Congressional Club fundie U.S. Senate wantabe, had filed for the NC 2nd Congressional District as a Republican. I have found out that Funderburk broke his ties with the Club after his loss in the 1986 Republican Senate primary. What does that mean for the gay and lesbian community? Probably nothing good. It is a conservative district and a fag lover would not stand a chance. Perhaps we'll not be as visible an issue in the election. But don't count on it. Jefferson Marketing, with strong ties to Jesse and the Congressional Club has been signed on by Richard Petty, the race car driver, to handle the arduous task of making Petty our next governor. Petty is a Republican county commissioner in Randolph County, south of Greensboro, for 16 years and is considering a race for governor. With Congressional Club ties, Richard Petty may be making an issue of you. Well, that is the way it has been in North Carolina, my home state. -YHT
