March 8, 1998 The New York Times 229 W. 43rd St. New York, NY 10036 Dear Editors: Frank Bruni's March 8 analysis of the New Jersey Boy Scouts case contained a peculiar quote from George Davidson, the lawyer for the Boy Scouts: "The Boy Scouts is maintaining, in common with the churches, that homosexual conduct is not morally straight." They may be maintaining that in common with most churches, but there is a rapidly growing minority of churches that refuse to make such a blanket statement. And there are many churches who would agree about conduct, but which seem to do a better job than the Scouts of distinguishing between orientation and behavior.
