On Tuesday, April 12, the City Council of Rochester, NY voted 6 to 3 to extend benefits, including health insurance, to the domestic partners of its employees and voted 5 to 4 to create a city-wide registry for domestic partners. Both piece include same sex and opposite sex couples. The legislation, co-sponsored by Council members Tim Mains (openly gay) and Brian Curran received the endoresement of Mayor William Johnson who addressed the council immediately following the vote. Citing his wish to insure that there was no question about his position on the two bills, he state his opposition to any form of disscrimination and promised to sign the legislation. The vote was the culmination of several month's work by the Coalition for Domestic Partnership in Rochester whose members included a cross-section of the Rochester Community. Speaking in favor of the domestic partnership proposal were clergy from the Presbyterian, Episcopal and Unitarian Churches. The Rochester chapters of the following national organizations also supported the measure: National Organization for Women, American Civil Liberties Union and Parent and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.
