Interesting developments right here in New Mexico "Gay UNM employees will be able to provide their partners with health insurance and benefits that married copules have long taken for granted following a new policy announced by UNM Equal Opportunity Programs last week. The policy, formulated by EOP and approved by UNM President Richard Peck and the President's council, includes all the benefits normally offered to married employees' spouses, including health insurance, free tuition and use of University facilities> Gay employees will also be entitled to bereavement leave if their partner dies. University policy already prohibited discrimination against gays and lesbians. The benefits will not come automatically, however. To prevent fraud by heterosexual roommates, a gay couple will have to either submit a signed affidavit or provide evidence of a long-term commitment-joint bank accounts, a joint lease or mortgage or providing a partner is named as the main beneficiary in one's will or life insurance policy, for instance." As quoted in the Daily Lobo, The Independent Voice of UNM Thursday, April 21, 1994, Vol 98, number 144 So the state of affairs continue to look up in the Land Of Enchantment ------------------------------------------------------------------------- To find out more about the anon service, send mail to help@anon.penet.fi.
